This is a little long but please give it a read if you can. I just really need to get this out.

I keep seeing these hot takes about how a queer reading for Luca is “ruining the director/writer’s vision!” Once a piece of art, media, etc is released to the public it ceases being the author’s and now belongs to all of us. He told the story he wanted to tell now the interpretation is up to us. And if you can substantiate and back-up a reading of that piece of media then guess what? The author is dead, baby!

I find it so frustrating that people place so much focus on authorial intent. The author’s vision is just one way to read it. We all bring out own experiences and biases to any reading we do of anything. The fact that so many queer people have come to this conclusion that the story of Luca is a queer one tells you that whether intended or not, whether you like it or not it’s completely valid and honestly it dominates a lot of the film.

So when I see people say it’s not queer, that it didn’t have the usual Pixar emotional tearjerker moments, that it was low-stakes. It makes me think this movie isn’t for them and I’m glad on some level they didn’t have the same reaction I did. Cause I sobbed, and the constant threat of being exposed to the town was incredibly high stakes to me. Cause I’ve lived a situation like that, “fit in or face the consequences.”

Thinking that queerness is only about romance or sex shows a fundamental lack of understanding of what it means to grow up queer. I was a gay kid that grew up in a small conservative rural town. I saw a lot of my own experiences in this movie. I felt SEEN by a movie like I haven’t in a long time...maybe even for the first time and you fuckers won’t take that away from me.

I refuse to believe that Luca was not made to be an allegory for a gay kid coming out. There are so many details like the two older ladies “coming out” as sea monsters at the end, the fact that Luca’s parents were going to “send him away” kind of calls back to threatening to send a kid to cxnversion cxmp, the quote by the grandmother at the end where she says “some will never accept him but he knows how to find the good ones!

And you can tell me, “Hey M! The director said it wasn’t that it was just about his friend!!”

BITCH!! He works for the Mouse!! Are they really going to go and let him talk about the movie as a gay allegory if that’s what it was??? The home of phobic big corporate Rickey the Mouse?? No!! While you may think that the directors and creators could openly and freely talk about their inspirations, unfortunately it doesn’t work like that! D*sney has such a chokehold around the media in general and their creators that even if it was an allegory, they would never be able to say that publicly.

I’m not saying that the pure friendship reading of the movie is invalid! either! I love that interpretation also! I am just saying as a queer kid growing up in a conservative environment that this movie hit a lot of notes that were familiar to me. So I am choosing to believe this was made to be a sweet gay coming of age story highlighting the innocence of a young first love!

although this has been said many times, i’ll say it again. luca is a queer story at heart. having to hide a major part of your identity and eventually finding people who accept you? totally the queer experience. many attempt to dispute this by saying things like ‘they’re just kids they can’t be gay’ but that’s exactly why this story is important. kids absolutely can be gay. many people i know, myself included, came to terms with their sexuality from a young age, around the same age the characters in this are. another thing is people assuming that they’re sexualizing luca and alberto by saying they’re queer, which is totally harmful as being queer isn’t inherently sexual. 


that aside, i love this movie. the characters are SO amazing. they’re complex and interesting and, for me, easy to relate to. the animation is beautiful and the story is so cute. it’s more of a slice of life film than other pixar movies and the plot isn’t as high stakes or adventurous as others, but it’s still easy to follow, the film never seems to draw on and there wasn’t a spot where i’ve lost interest in the plot. absolutely love everything about this movie and recommend it to anyone. it’s a movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family, it’s always a bonus when your four year old sisters wants to sit and watch it with you instead of running around the house. absolutely wonderful.

I love Luca credit arts so much because they show the progress of Luca and Alberto relationship after the movie end. Like Luca keeping his promise to write letters and we also could see how happy Alberto is living with both Luca's and Giulia's families.

I clean it up a bit. Just to appreciate it Even more.

1. Luca Writing letter to Alberto with "Caro Alberto ( Dear Alberto)😭"

2. Alberto reading the letter from Luca hanging upside down on his bed (he has a bed now 😭) . This is peak gay attitude the way he was reading the letter from your crush.

3. He showed the letter to Luca's family and even brought Massimo to Luca's house with that suit lmao

4. Calling each other on the phone while all family listening. Also Luca's grandmother might know about Alberto's feeling toward Luca by the way she looked at him. 🤭

5. Luca getting the letter back from Alberto and reading it with Giulia's and her mom 😭

6. Massimo celebrating Alberto's birthday and giving him knife as the gift 😭

7. Doing the same thing even a part. Alberto with his growing enthusiasm to learn about vespa, all those books about "motor" and "velocita" scattered around him 😭 ..also Luca has a dog now 😍

8. Luca's and Giulia's family together lmao Alberto just sipping tea while Luca's mother lost her mind over her husband antic. Massimo days must be so chaotic with luca's family visiting them so often lol

9. Also The grumpy cat is a dad now with eight kittens 🤣💖

10. Alberto and Massimo wearing matching pajamas. And I bet this is just Luca's parents coming to their house without any notice and just make themselves at home cooking breakfast for these two 😭😭

They really become one big family at the end. This movie is seriously so heartwarming 💖💖💖💖💖.
