Cryptids & Creatures of Folklore Drawtober Day 21 — Mermaids

Mermaids are aquatic creatures with the head and torso of a human and the tail of a fish.

Also called sirens, they are said to be able to use their ethereal beauty and bewitching voices to lure men to their deaths, sometimes by crashing their ships upon rocks or sailing into storms and other times by becoming the sirens' dinner.

Merfolk have been present in the folklore of many cultures around the world for centuries and sightings of these mysterious creatures are still reported to this day.

I really hate the way lesbians talk about women sometimes. You might not be a man but the way you talk to and about women is creepy as fuck. You don’t get a pass at being a misogynist for being a lesbian.

You need to respect women. I don’t care what you think of her looks, what you “want to do to her”, if you want her as your wife or not. The assumption that women who get defensive and angry when hearing those words are lesbophobic because “I’m a lesbian, not a man” is a manipulative strategy and an attempt to belittle and disrespect a woman for saying no and refusing to be talked down to. This way of talking to women gets even worse in professional settings where dating and your personal preferences isn’t even the topic.

After not being taken seriously by men, judged depending on attractiveness and not being respected, it’s completely understandable for women to respond with anger and repulsion to anyone making an advance. In fact, that’s exactly what women should do when they’re uninterested and annoyed.

Being an aroace disabled person is so fun because whenever the possibility of (aro)ace disabled characters is raised, the disabled community is always like, "umm, that's a negative stereotype because you're just saying disabled people aren't full adults, capable of consent with ~normal~ desires and that we're unloveable, why are our characters always asexual?"

Like, a) the vast majority of disabled characters aren't ace, lmao, b) they're just fully accepting all the negative stereotypes and beliefs about asexuals being broken, unfulfilled or not fully/properly developed and the idea that being in rose (romantic/sexual) relationships is a necessary part of being fully humanised and c) centering allo disabled feelings of annoyance over these negative stereotypes about asexuals being applied to them, about asexuality being used to dehumanise them, without recognising that the group most hurt by the dehumanised asexual disabled character is asexual disabled people. They fully accept us being misrepresented, they're just annoyed they're hurt too. Good representation for ace disabled people is an important part of the pushback against this trope, but they'll never accept that because they just hate any association with us. Why must a disabled character be allosexual to be good representation?

"We'd accept it if it was good." The fact you say all that aphobic shit when it isn't is proof enough you have a problem. It is in fact a basic part of the bigot playbook to criticise any poorly executed minority character's existence and then defend themselves by saying they wouldn't say all that bigoted shit if they were a good character.

But a lot of you can't even acknowledge aces are a minority, despite the fact you say all this shit, despite the fact aces have the same rate of conversion therapy as gay people, despite the fact that asexuality is still a diagnosis in the DSM and ICD. We have 101 problems even getting you to recognise that aphobia exists, let alone that you contribute to it.

The passenger population continues to dwindle. In the 10,000 years after the Nebu-Kadnean war effectively ended the corpocaste culture, the population has fallen from 2 billion at its peak to 201,032,471 individuals currently. Nebu, moreso survivor than winner of the war, the former most populous habitat, has been ravaged by millenia of follow-up wars and is currently a lawless wasteland. The remnants of the great war’s warbeasts and gentech warriors roam the arid lands, trying to keep civilization going. Settlements popping up as fast as they disappear through droughts and raids. Bandit lords raising to power just for their dominions to splinter as soon as they fall in battle.

Water is the most valuable resource in the Nebbian desert. Since the habitat was cut off from the ship’s hydrological systems, it relies entirely on natural precipitation. It’s enough to sustain an arid ecosphere, but not enough for river systems and lush biomes. Water does collect in the old cellars and canalizations of the ruins of the Nebbian cities, making these cisterns incredibly valuable for the remaining Nebbies. But collecting the valuable cistern water is not without dangers. Namely the cistern keepers. Large feral semiaquatic war beasts originally made to protect water reservoirs.

During the war, water was already a rare commodity on the Nebbian side. Just as valuable for the civilian population as it was for the military. To keep water reservoirs from falling into Kadnean hands, they infested them with massive controllable war beasts. Durable, powerful and originally armoured and equipped with automated weaponry, these monsters would lurk under the surface and surprise attack anyone without a Nebbian identification chip. They might not have been able to stand against a full army on their own, but they did’t need to. All they needed was to make any source of water hard to get.

Cistern keepers were meant to be deployed strategically, but they thrived on their own after the war. Feeding on fish and ambushing creatures seeking out the caverns for a drop of water. They navigate through the murky waters using sensory hairs on their chin. Their size and thick leathery hide protects them against other feral war beasts and sapient hunters, even outside their watery domain. Young cistern keepers seek out new caverns, hiding in the sand to avoid predation. Adult ones also occasionally leave their territory to seek out new waters and potential mates.

Nebu has become a dangerous place, where even looking for a drink can be deadly. If the passengers want to survive here, they have to get crafty.”
