Media: Here's an aroace character! We didn't use the word aroace because it didn't exist when our media was made but we did explicitly say this character has never been attracted to anyone and does not possess any emotional feelings attached to sex or relationships.

Fans: Well actually since they didn't use the word aroace (which didn't exist when the media was made) this means that their lack of attraction is somehow not innate and can be fixed by meeting the right person (please ignore how this perfectly mirrors homophobic "you're not gay you're just struggling with same sex attraction and you'll meet the right one someday" rhetoric) and that right person is (looks for closest friendship this character has) is someone of the same gender so this character is gay and if you disagree you're homophobic.

People should stop saying they support queer representation when they actually mean they support gay romance. The reactions to queer characters not in same gender relationships prove that a lot of you are not interested in anything outside of that.

My greatest fear as a comics fan is that R*ct*r and/or Shatt*rst*r will be adapted into MR and then there'll be a new landslide of people (worst of all, gamers) Aware of them and I'll be one of maybe three people who cares Star was originally aroace. And with Ap*c*lypse being adapted this season we're getting dangerously closer to the chance that damn game adapts the worst R*ct*r characterization if all time as well.

To be quite honest with you all I do think that aro/ace-spectrum fans in fandoms where people are desperately inventing crossover ships and humanizing non-human characters in order to have a conventionally attractive guy to ship the main character with, instead of possibly having to enjoy a story with no romance in it, have the right to refer to everyone else as cowards.

While I don't think it's the exact same as erasing the sexuality of an individual character who has an asexual orientation, I do think it's worth considering why so many people's reaction, (both creators and fans alike!), to a biologically asexual species is to disregard or "fix" that fact so they can ship them sexually and what that says about the pervasiveness of compulsory sexuality.

"Why would this character be jealous of their friend's romantic relationships? Clearly they're in love with them" I don't know if you guys have ever Had Friends but it's actually pretty common for people to feel jealous if their best friend suddenly has less time for them and is prioritising someone they just met over them. That's not inherently romantic, that's the general human desire to be valued by the people you value.

Hearing Phil Lord in the director's commentary say that he asked post production to time the scene of Grace and Stratt talking right before the astrophage explosion as romantic [shudder] at least Sandra Hüller and Ryan Gosling didn't get the memo.

Most of the translations of Project Hail Mary into other languages are so boring, they're all shit like "The Astronaut" or "Project End of the World", "Project Last Chance", "Escape from the Apocalypse", "Salvation Project" "Saviour", "Project Desperate Attempt", "Extreme Return". No fun at all.

There is however one great exception, Cantonese, which I have to give props for translating it as "Doomsday Mother Mary Ship". That shit rocks.

Genuinely love how the Project Hail Mary fandom is largely centered on non romantic relationships. Even the fanfic is mostly gen, it's unbelievable. I'm more surprised to see someone ship the main character and whoever than I am to see them not. This never happens.

I don't know how to explain this to people but when an actor or writer says their character isn't interested in a relationship because they're asexual, they're not misusing the term or failing to understand the spectrum or conflating asexuality with aromanticism, they are using it completely correctly and validly. If they said that their character isn't going to be in a straight relationship because they're homosexual and you responded to that by saying "Ugh, stop conflating homosexuality and homoromanticism, you can be homosexual and not homoromantic, you can still be in straight romantic relationships" you would be a pedant abusing the fact a word has two definitions to ignore the context which shows they're using the definition you don't like because it gets in the way of what you want.

All sexuality descriptions can both serve as descriptions of sexuality exclusively and describe entire orientations, both sexual and romantic, because not everyone uses the split attraction model. Use your brains, use context, stop trying to force anyone talking about asexuality to close every possible loophole you'll try to find to dismiss the issue because heavens forbid someone doesn't state that they are a sex repulsed romance repulsed asexual aromantic every single time.

Can you imagine people in-universe posting shit like "When I haven't done any work and the deadline's tomorrow but I remember Ryland Grace chose to sacrifice himself for humanity with only three hours notice so I gotta lock in" only to find out 20 years later he literally got dragged screaming crying throwing up to space against his will. Like he had to be sedated.
