studying tips that ACTUALLY work
I personally like to create flashcards while I’m watching lectures so I don’t have to reread my notes again just to write my flashcards. flashcards also help me with active recall and blurting and I find it way more effective than purely memorising from my notes
understanding the content is also way more important than rote memorisation and helps me to absorb the information much faster (becuz it just makes sense)
break down the information into easy to understand ideas and make use of frameworks/ mnemonics to understand the concept by linking the ‘chunked’/broken pieces
personally, I memorise a whole essay by splitting it into multiple paragraphs. for each paragraph, I begin by reading one sentence out loud then I close my eyes and recite it. I continue with the other sentences until I can recite the whole paragraph and then I write the paragraph out on a piece of paper without referring to the essay. after writing it out, I fill in the information I missed with a red colour ink, or just a different colour so I can remember the mistakes I made. I believe that by using most of our senses- touch, hearing, sight, we can memorise it more effectively
sleep after memorising. I find that when I memorise before bedtime, I am able to absorb content and remember it for a longer period of time. (does anyone know the science behind this)
I love using applications like notion, google calendar to plan out my month so that I can stay on task and focused
the phone is our biggest enemy. I find that using YPT, a study app which restricts the usage of other apps, is really helpful as I realised that the time I have spent doomscrolling after using this app has decreased significantly
ALWAYS study every day, even if it is just 10 minutes. it is important to stay consistent and keep that momentum going. NO ZERO DAYS!
if there are days that you just don’t feel like studying, tell yourself ‘just five minutes’. tidy your table, reply that email, read that piece of work…once you sit and start doing something, you find that it is so much easier to just continue working/studying because the hardest step is STARTING and you have already started!
when I find that I have started revision too late, I will jump straight into doing practice questions, because that is a key way to identity the gaps in my memory and focus on those areas
