you know, it's great that renarin is explicitly autistic, but it does make for very weird reading when you're reading a chapter from another character's perspective and they're acting exactly like renarin (again, textually autistic) and then you're supposed to believe that that character is not autistic. what do you mean szeth has the exact same dilemmas over making decisions for himself and telling right from wrong and being mocked by his friends, but he's not autistic? ridiculous. especially when it's one of renarin's relatives. i mean, autism is genetic, where do you think he got it from? the man with a rigid, inflexible moral code who is incapable of talking about anything without relating it back to his favourite book? surely not

*taps microphone* Steris Harms would have made an excellent Trapper on Patchi. Yes it's super dangerous but all the dangers can be anticipated and prepared for. She would thrive on Patchi. She would be best friends with Sixth of the Dusk even though most of their interactions would be just sitting quietly in roughly the same room. Sixth would be ecstatic that she comes with clear, written instructions on how to be her friend. They would say exactly three words to each other a year and have a connection so strong it makes a bondsmith feel inadequate.

My problem with the debate isn't that it happened. I like that Jansah had a moment to finally reflect on her actions. I liked the narrative framework of it looping back to the way of kings where Jasnah and Taravangian also have a debate, which Shallan points out isn't entirely fair bc at the time Taravangian wasn't in the best state of mind and Jasnah winning wasn't much of an accomplishment.

So now that the tables are switched with Tarry literally becoming god while their earlier debate centered around the existence of God is such an interesting thing you can play with. And it is to some extent but not nearly enough as it could have been. The execution was just lacking.

Her last scene in the book, with her crying bc she feels like a failure, and she just wished that there was somone left that was close enough to her as to be able to comfort her is so visceral and heart breaking bc up to this point Jasnah has presented herself as this impenetrable fortress and nothing gets to her like that. In a vacuum, it's an incredible scene that makes me wonder what her character arc will be in the next books. It just doesn't... feel earned.

Because the debate scene mearly presented itself like there were problems with Jasnah's logic but Jasnah's arguments weren't the ones that were flawed. Rather, Taravangian's points were the ones that felt redundant attacking Jasnah's character (which weren't even true, btw. They were only half truths that missed the entire reasoning behind her actions) instead of her contentions.

The issue there wasn't with Jasnah at all, but alternatively with Fen, who was swayed by Taravangian's piss poor excuse for a debate.

Jasnah Kholin, beloved, my muse, my queen, my everything, do NOT listen to the haters they merely want to besmirch your good name. You have done absolutely nothing wrong, ever, in your entire life.
