Hey, Love your blog! I was hoping you could write a meta about the parallels and symbolism of water and fire? Like how in the deserter Jeong Jeong called water life and the fire bending masters called fire life. Or how after 14 years of life, only through an injury of fire was Katara able to unlock her healing? Ever seen any other parallels of between the two elements? If you have time maybe you could compare earth and air too, but i don't see a lot of parallels for that?
Since I’ll be comparing Water AND Fire, this will be somewhat lengthy. The reason that Fire and Water represent life is because the symbolism relates to the Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine energies. In order to create new life, male and female energies are required to come together as one. Allow me to elaborate:
The Sacral Chakra is located in abdominal region, directly over the testes in men and ovaries in women. This chakra is connected to the Etheric body (the subtle state of consciousness that transcends the known physical universe). It is associated with the color orange. A person with an overactive Sacral Chakra will have a tendency to be overly dramatic or highly emotional at times.
The Moon represents Divine Feminine energy. This is a spiritual archetype; it does not mean that this energy only exists in female-bodied individuals. In fact, it exists in everyone, and the end goal of the chakra process is to balance the masculine and feminine energies in yourself to attain true spiritual health. Divine Feminine energy represents compassion, love, empathy, openness, intuition, and motherhood. Water is the element of care and nurturing. Life cannot exist without water. That is also symbolic.
Because of Katara’s past, she has an imbalance of her Sacral Chakra, due to the emotional wounds it has left her with. This has caused her Sacral Chakra to be overactive. Because of this, she is unable to properly master waterbending on her own, and her true ability only comes out in full force when she experiences heightened emotions, like when she yells at Sokka, revealing Aang in the iceberg.
Because Katara comes from the community-oriented Southern Water Tribe, she has loving bonds in her life that help mitigate the pain from losing her mother. Thanks to this, her chakra imbalance is not as severe as Zuko’s and she is still able to be caring and nurturing to others, such as when Aang is grieving over the death of Monk Gyatso.
Despite her natural talent, her Sacral Chakra imbalance means that Katara struggles with waterbending at first, which frustrates her. Because the Sacral Chakra has to do with emotional balance, Aang’s more lighthearted personality helps him become more adept at waterbending more quickly, at least before they train under Master Pakku.
Also because of her Sacral Chakra imbalance, Katara needs to experience heightened emotions to unlock her true potential and hidden abilities. This is why she was only able to realize her healing abilities after being burned. Her healing abilities also relate to her being an empath. An empath is someone who can feel other people’s emotions as if they were their own. This allows them to connect with another person’s energy field, and transmit their own energy into them, healing them in the process.
This Sacral Chakra association is also why waterbenders receive strength underneath the moonlight, especially a full moon, when the sun and moon are at opposite ends of the planet, and the moon has the greatest energetic effect on the planet and its inhabitants.
This is also why Princess Yue was able to give her life to Tui. She possesses the same healing abilities associated with the Moon and the Divine Feminine energy due to receiving the Moon Spirit’s energy as a baby, even though she is not a waterbener. This allows her to bring the Koi Fish back to life and become the new Moon Spirit.
Katara’s healing abilities play a special role in her relationship to Zuko. She offers to heal his scar and later heals him when he takes a lightning bolt for her. But this goes beyond physical wounds. Like Katara, Zuko’s Sacral Chakra is also out of balance in the story. Unlike Katara, his Sacral Chakra is underactive, which manifests as shame, guilt, and emotional repression. Katara’s healing not only affects Zuko’s body, but her abilities have a healing effect on his emotions as well.
The Solar Plexus Chakra is located just behind the naval region below the rib cage. The Solar Plexus Chakra is associated with color yellow, which symbolizes energy, intellect and also the relationship a person has with Fire and the Sun. Judgmental, critical, angry, over-energetic and aggressive personalities tend to have an overactive Solar Plexus Chakra. A well balanced Solar Plexus Chakra enables one to effectively set out and achieve their goals. The Sacral Chakra is right next to the Solar Plexus Chakra and they are related to each other.
The Sun represents Divine Masculine energy. The Divine Masculine represents action, direction, movement, responsibility, strength, focus, fatherhood, intellect, transformation and growth. Fire also is the element of decisiveness and willpower.Life cannot exist without the Sun’s sustenance. That is also part of the symbolism.
Because the Fire Nation has fallen out of balance due to their warmongering and imperialistic culture, the citizens, especially the Fire Nation Royal Family, raise their children with certain attitudes and beliefs that promote dominance and aggression. Because these traits do not match Zuko’s natural gentle temperament, he develops emotional health issues from an early age due to feeling rejected and unable to meet expectations. This develops into an uderactivity of his Sacral Chakra, unlike Katara’s overactive one.
This happens again later when he is expected to take part in an Agni Kai against his father against wishes. He pleads for mercy, and receives terrible violence and abuse in turn for his “weakness”. This emotional and physical abuse causes Zuko to develop a severe overactivity of his Solar Plexus Chakra from a very early age. We see this in his impatient, angry, and aggressive tendencies.
This is not Zuko’s true personality. It is a distortion due to abuse and the pressure he is under to live up to expectations as a Fire Nation Imperial Prince and soldier. Because this role is ill-suited for his natural personality, it ensures that he is in a permanent state of imbalance of his Solar Plexus Chakra. Because the Solar Plexus Chakra relates to firebending, this affects his combat skills. Try as he may, he cannot live up to the expectations for him to be a ruthless soldier as Firelord Ozai’s firstborn son.
This affects his ability to fight against Aang. Because this chakra is associated with willpower and energy, Zuko’s inner conflict causes his firebending skills to come up short many times. Deep down, Zuko feels that there is something deeply wrong with his “duty” to capture the Avatar. Although he tries to set these feelings aside and remain in denial, they exist in his subconscious and they affect his ability to have a balanced Solar Plexus Chakra, leaving him defeated time and time again.
Zuko did better against Zhao during their Agni Kai. This was because he had no internal conflict during the fight. His actions were in alignment with his inner feelings. Zhao is someone who has complete disregard for Zuko and disrespects him. So, because Zuko wanted to fight him, his firebending was far more skillful than many of the times where he fights Aang. It is not that Zuko is not talented, despite his beliefs. It is that his chakras are imbalanced.
The Solar Plexus Chakra symbolism is also the reason that firbending is associated with the Sun and why Zuko was able to win against Katara at sunrise. There is additional symbolism associated with this battle, but I am working on another meta about that topic. That one deals with how Ehasz intended for Zuko and Katara to be soul mates.
There are other times in the story that we see Zuko fight particularly well, because his actions are consistent with his beliefs. When he fights to rescue his uncle when he is captured by earthbenders, and when he fights to save Lee, he displays very powerful firebending, associated with the Solar Plexus Chakra.
However, in Book 3 Zuko is back in the Fire Nation and therefore back in emotional turmoil. He is once again angry and his firebending becomes fueled with rage. This is the type of firebending that he is most accustomed to. His inability to accept his situation with his family puts him into a very imbalanced chakra state.
When Zuko finally leaves the palace and joins the Avatar, he finds himself unable to firebend. This is because, for the first time in his life, his Solar Plexus Chakra is in balance; his lifestyle is in alignment with his feelings and he has no inner conflict about his actions anymore. But Zuko is not used to this. His entire life has been spent in a state of imbalance and that is the state in which he learned how to firebend; with rage and intense emotions. He does not know how to adapt to his new situation where he is calm and at peace with himself.
This is why Aang and Zuko needed to go to the Sun Warriors’ Temple and learn from Ran and Shaw, the Masters. When the Dragons use their Breath of Fire, called Maha Agni Pranyam, it is an allusion to the enlightenment process of the Crown Chakra. The reason that the fire is rainbow in color is because it represents a state of total chakra balance. Each chakra is associated with one color of the rainbow. Root is red, Sacral is orange, Solar plexus is yellow, Heart is green, Throat is blue, Third Eye is indigo, and Crown is violet.
After seeing the Dragons, Zuko’s firebending skills are far superior to before. This is because his chakras are finally balanced and his true skills as a firebender will finally come to be realized. The Fire Nation’s indoctrination held Zuko back from realizing his true talent because of the distorted way that they promoted firebending; they misuse the energy of life.
This is also why Jeong Jeong was not the best firebending teacher for Aang. Jeong Jeong spent his life in the Fire Nation army and saw firebending at its worst. He has come to associate it with rage, aggression and domination. His exposure to people like Zhao led him to become a deserter, but it also made him cynical towards his own element and nation. He sees Katara’s healing abilities and disparages firebending out of shame.
This negativity rubs off on Aang and makes him fear firebending. He starts to see it as nothing but pain and destruction. After learning from the Masters, Aang is able to see that this is not the case. Fire is no worse than any other element. It has the capacity to sustain life, as well as take it. It all depends on the user.
All of this ties in to Zuko and Katara’s alter egos as well. The Painted Lady is associated with Fire, and the Divine Masculine energy. The affirmation of the Solar Plexus Chakra is “I do”. Katara takes action and harnesses her masculine energy in secret while she goes against her friends’ wishes to heal people from an enemy nation. She does this under the cover of moonlight using her healing abilities, incorporating her own identity into the Painted Lady.
With Zuko, it is similar. The Sacral Chakra’s affirmation is “I feel”. His alter ego has a Water Elemental association, and thus the Divine Feminine energy as well. Because Zuko was brought up in such a way that his feminine energy was suppressed, he takes on the Blue Spirit persona in an attempt to hide his true self and become the cold warrior he feels he should be. Iroh forces him to look into his heart and embrace his true inner emotional self and he finally lets go of his other identity. He then lets Appa go, also helping his enemies. When Appa returns to the Gaang, it looks like he is coming straight out of the Sun.
This ties in to The Southern Raiders as well. Both the “I feel” and “I do” attributes of the Sacral and Solar Plexus chakras are incorporated into this episode as Katara and Zuko take action to help Katara gain closure for her emotional turmoil. Zuko and Katara are the only two characters who can understand each other in this episode, because of their mutual lifelong experience having chakra imbalances, and their bond grows stronger at the end because of this.

When you hate slowburn fics because you’re impatient, but simultaneously hate fastburn fics because they aren’t ‘realistic’
MOOOOood
Doesn’t this make you emotional? It makes me feel so many things…
Our boy got half his face burnt off the last time he spoke out against some evil plan, he got branded, humiliated, chucked out of his childhood home, went through all kinds of hell - and it didn’t even make a difference. The evil plan got executed anyways. He spent three years questioning himself, trying to figure out what he did wrong and how to fix it.
Nobody in their right mind would expect him to speak out again - it’s stupid, self-destructive and pointless - but still, he expects it of himself. After three years of searching who he is - he realizes at that second war council that he is still one who wants to speak out for what’s right, consequences be damned. It’s more important than being Crown Prince, more important than his family, home or nation.
And in the end, the understanding that the thirteen year old boy was right the whole time, gives him the courage to finally stand up to his father and leave. To make that difference he always wanted to make. To give meaning to the suffering of that boy.
I can tear bend.
Zutara is so beautiful, it’s therapeutic.
& you can’t convince me otherwise. They always make me so happy. And that’s that.
