while he was raised catholic, he struggles with his beliefs because of what he has seen and dealt with on the job. he’s seen some of the worst people do some of the worst things. with that being said, deep down zabel still clings to the idea that there is a place of peace after you die (not that he wants to die any time soon, of course). it’s that hope that pushes him to continue helping the victims of his cases.

zabel sat across from the brunette, his portfolio open with the woman's recent police file and a notepad spread out in front of him. elbows rested on the dull and dented metal table between them as he listened -- truly listened -- to what the suspect was saying. ever since he solved that cold case in upper darby, he's been trying to prove himself worthy of the accolades that had been showered upon him. when he was given the camp redwood investigation, he had read over everything about brooke and the case several times.

she was right. when he spoke to the cops involved in the case, they all had mostly written her off as crazy (cute girl but fucking nuts had been one cop's exact words). but he wasn't like them. despite outward appearances of well-tailored suits and perfect hair, he was still trying to find his footing. 

zabel gave a small nod of his head as he left his pen on the notepad and leaned back. he understood the reluctance. he thought for a moment; he didn't want to come off as condescending or as if he was already writing her off with the same label without hearing her side of the story. dark eyes refocused and rose to meet her gaze. “i get it. i wouldn't trust me either after everything you've been through. you don’t have to talk to me, but i’m your LAST chance. it's up to you.”

dark  brows  are  knit  in  thought  when  her  name  catches  her  attention  and  causes  boots  to  halt  in  their  track.        “z,  what’s  up?”          it’s  expected  that  he’ll  ask  her  about  the  case,  about  some  new  found  evidence  that  he  needs  her  to  relay  to  the  medical  examiner,  but  when  that  doesn’t  happen  and  he’s  offering  her  a  𝐶𝑂𝐹𝐹𝐸𝐸  ,  a  smile  forms.        “oh,  yes.  my  coffee.”        she’ll  play  a  long  for  his  sake,  a  slight  lean  to  her  left  offering  a  glace  over  his  side  to  the  man  shooting  daggers  in  zabel’s  back  from  mare’s  office.          “two  creams  and  four  sugars,  right?  looks  like  you  also  forgot  my  chocolate  chip  muffin,  but  i  assume  you’ve  got  me  tomorrow,  hmm?”        a  little  pay  it  forward  for  doing  him  a  solid  and  for  the  exit  she’s  about  to  give  him.

relief is evident on the detective's face as helena accepts the unbidden cup of coffee. mare would have called him out right in front of hauser. well, if mare had been here, hauser wouldn't be and this situation would never have come up. “. . .FOUR sugars?” his brow arches upwards again, as if he expected her to like her coffee black but zabel has to remind himself again that she isn't mare. “--of course, two creams.” he nods in confirmation. when she mentions the muffin, he tilts his head and gives her a mild look. really? but he won't say anything about it because it's the least he can do. “sure, i'll get you two to make up for it.” it's the least he can do.

zabel nods his head again, motioning for her to lead the way. he gives a quick glance over his shoulder at the older detective and gives a half-hearted shrug -- not even caring to wait for any sort of response from the man. sorry, gotta run. (sorry not sorry as the kids say.) he waits until they're out of earshot before he speaks again. “thanks for saving me back there. i really do owe you one.”
