“It wasn’t at all about the way the individual drawings looked. It’s about how they worked as comics. I was coming of age in the mid-’70s, when a lot of things were just about stuff like Barry Smith and those guys who were all about drawing these detailed, Pre-Raphaelite images that didn’t really appeal to me as comics. The characters all felt like they were just drawings, rather than people. And Ditko, you felt like, These are living, breathing people who exist in this weird country that only Steve Ditko knows about. They all look like they were from the same gene pool, and they all felt like they were a projection of his own particular worldview. That’s what I’ve always strived for, because that’s where the real power of comics lies. That kind of expression of your own inner self through these characters.”

This is an old piece I did with Rob Haynes that shows our process when we worked together.  This is Rob’s original sketch, my finishes, and then I flipped it back to Rob for tones/color.  We had a blast working together for all those years – it’s fun to go back and see all the little tweaks we made on this one as we passed it back and forth.  I learned so much from Rob.  I wish more artists had the opportunity to work like this… breakdowns/finishes are fascinating to study.  Miller/Janson, Paul Smith/BWS (or anybody with BWS), Buscema/Sienkiewicz are some of my favorites that come to mind.

But reaching it is easier said than done as she crosses the border into IMAGE where she’ll have to chop her way through you favorite characters from Saga, The Walking Dead, Savage Dragon, Spawn, Descender, Black Science, Southern Bastards, and any other character I can add to make sure the original art for this issue sends my children to college! GHOST RIDER - ROBBIE REYES Design Process by Felipe Smith and Tradd Moore (2013) I’m often asked whether Felipe or I designed All-New Ghost Rider Robbie Reyes, and the answer is… we both did! Here are images chronicling our design process in order from start to finish.

I’ve included some never before seen sketches so you can see when elements were added, altered, jettisoned, embellished, etc.

Felipe ( @felipesmithart ) got the ball rolling with the first drawings of Robbie, then passed it to me. We emailed sketches and ideas back and forth (and back and forth) until we ended up with the final design. Easy, right? ;)

A huge amount of credit also goes to Marvel editor extraordinaire Mark Paniccia whose vision, direction, and feedback was integral to the design process–Robbie Reyes would not exist without him!
