You all know who he is. You know better than he does, for that matter. That’s kind of the problem.

You ever accidentally sleep in for 100 years and have no idea what’s going on anymore?

Legendary hero of... whatever this is.

Hasn’t saved the world yet, so maybe don’t bring it up...

Extremely high levels of chaotic energy.

Really just a sad kid. Will get along with other sad kids.

He can talk. For reasons of ‘because I said so’. On the whole, he’s a more open person than his past self would have been. He also has no understanding of how social interactions are supposed to work.

“Can a protagonist get a break, bitch?!”

Solemnly pats her on the shoulder.

“I think... I died once. I don’t remember.”

He pokes at the donuts covering the ground with his staff, sliding them out of the way to try and make a pastryless path for himself.

“So… is anyone going to clean this up or..?”

Don’t worry. He’s working on it.

He’s... eating donuts right off the ground.

“My…what an interesting concoction you’ve brewed. Why don’t you taste it for yourself, hm? Just for precaution. I’d like to live, after all.”

Unbothered by her words, he nods, before taking a big bite of the food. And chewing. And chewing. The dried meat has not reconstituted in the way he thought it would. He’s still chewing. After he finally manages to swallow the mouthful, he offers a thumbs-up.

he feels nothing about the pain and suffering INFLICTED upon his fellow citizens. his heart is empty, no attachments and strings of fate attached to anyone who breathes the same air as he. it is EASIER to simply work through the motions, then to goddesses forbid - process his emotions. yet, it appears as though it has been too long since he’s been HAUNTED … by a figure of his past or his future —- at this moment, it doesn’t matter. of course one of hyrule’s little heroes would INTERRUPT one of his attempts to unwind! though, after a few seconds of TENSE eye contact, he grunts, focusing on a slowly approaching wave of blackened sludge. 

❝oh, it’s YOU. if it is your INTENT to strike me down, do so ONCE this has come to pass.❞ the light of the master sword sears his vision, even when eye contact has broke. ❝i shall call you my ally in the face of GREATER foes - i’ll grant you that much.❞

It’s you.

He gets the sense he’s supposed to know who this is. An uneasy feeling settles in the pit of his stomach. The sword in his hand hums with energy—a warning. But who is it for?

There isn’t time to dwell on it. Ally or not, Link is sworn to protect others.

“We have to get back.” His voice is quiet, matter-of-fact. He points to the sludge, which advances at an ominously steady rate. He doesn’t know what it is, but he’s seen what it does: it’s too similar to the malice staining parts of Hyrule to be worth taking chances with. “There’s no way to stop that stuff.”

He shakes his head.

“Moon just gets...” what’s the word he’s looking for? “Evil. Sometimes.”

Don’t look now, but he’s shovelling as much fried rice as he can fit into his pockets. It’s free food.

"We get plenty of solar eclipses, but when's the last time you saw a blood moon?" Hardly any, back home -- way harder for the planet to blot out two suns' worth of light. He's seen plenty of celestial phenomena since, but they don't lose their charm.

He’s gotten sick of it, honestly.

    It’d be a strange sight, if you had the eyes to see it in the dark. Two tall men in suits, awkwardly crouched behind a parked car, wielding weapons of steel—while wearing safety goggles.      The inky sky doesn’t help with visibility either, but Fifteen’s ability to predict and loop the future has severely mitigated the amount of trouble they’d run into.

     They weren’t looking for trouble tonight; both of them agreed on the importance of reconnoitering, when it was affordable. Studying what patterns and behaviors they could from CPNs and Ofiuclones was valuable information to gain. With future sight, they could handle the danger.

A line of light races down the street, briefly illuminating the car’s side mirror enough for the two to notice—

—the hero’s lighting-imbued arrow incapacitating an airborne CPU behind them, stunning it to ground it onto the asphalt beside them. Little arcs of electricity keep it helpfully visible as it writhes. Rushing out from cover, it’s finished off by the green-haired one of the two, a spiked metal bat delivering forceful antivirus.

“If we saw that,” Jack begins to say, but Fifteen’s already charging ahead, racing down the street to the archer that saved them.

    The NULL soldier’s fast—streetlights are beginning to flicker on as he runs, a trail of lights growing behind him—but he knows he still won’t be able to close the gap between parties in time to trade favors with their savior. He’s peered into the future enough times to know the best option was to call out, and so he does:

“DUCK! Then dodge right!!”

    There wasn’t enough time to tell Link much else—the twisted Ofiuclone that’s snuck up behind him has already prepared an attack, and he only had single-digit seconds of action to spare. There was a good chance he could trust Fifteen’s instruction enough to instinctively follow through. If worst came to worst, the NULL would rewind the encounter, and think up another way through.

Link watches as his arrow hits its mark—not an easy target to spot, a dark monster against the dark sky, but he doesn’t miss. He hasn’t been here long, but his instinct tells him the technological-looking enemies would be weak to electricity. He nocks another shock arrow, eyes scanning for another target.

DUCK, a voice from the dark tells him. He’s startled, letting the arrow shoot off in a random direction. But alerting him to the threat was enough: though he moves a second too late, the Ofiuclone’s attack bounces off, repelled by a crystalline shield that manifests around him. Just a little help from a friend...

And a little help from a stranger. He jumps out of the way of the next attack, drawing his sword to fight back.

He can see the man now, and nods to him quickly before turning his attention back to the enemy.

thump. thump. thump. like a drumbeat that reigns supreme within his skull, a massive migraine, he hears it with great DISPLEASURE - the source of his current misery. as thrilling as it is to stretch his wings, he sensed no end goal in sight. being a military commander, a powerful warrior, he can tell without a shadow of a doubt, that something is alive and DANGEROUS and would not stop at nothing short of EXTERMINATING every living being on sight. your own future, a voice in the back of his skull mocks, but he pushes it back with an orb or energy into the chest of a cpn. flickering data screeches across his vision - before it falls silent. silence save for one thing. thump. THUMP. 

❝—-meddlesome, DISGUSTING things - begone with you, weaklings!❞ growling from the DEPTHS of his throat, too prideful by far to pay heed to the SUPPOSED help from the other city or the safe zones dotting the city.

He can barely sense the thrumming beneath the ground, overwhelmed by the chaos swarming the city. CPNs spawn from the muck left by their fallen allies, faster than they can be cut down. The hero fights with practiced grace, his skills honed by countless battles... most of which he doesn’t remember.

Is this how Hyrule looked on the day of the Calamity? It’s a bleak sight, but all hope isn’t lost yet.

He drives the Master Sword through another shadowy form, cutting them in two. As he pulls the blade free of the fallen enemy, it seems to take a life of its own: suddenly aglow with holy light, responding to a presence other than the evil which menaces the city.

He looks up, eyes widening as he meets the gaze of a strange, tall man.

“Hey!!” Link calls out. Get out of the way, he wants to say, but he can only point frantically at a monster looming up behind the other kid. What a time to forget his words, but he’s gotten so used to fighting alone.

There’s no time to explain. He sees the massive shield held by the stranger, and rushes in to duck behind her.

On the other side, an explosion goes off, knocking down a group of CPNs.

It wasn’t unusual for the younger Link to find people who looked like him- he was fairly used to it, at this point. That there was just a lot of hylians named Link who looked like him was honestly something expected- though, he hadn’t really expected to run into a new one here. But that wouldn’t stop the kid from jumping down from the overhang in the barn, landing on a pile of hay and hopping out.

‘Hi! Are you a Link?’ An odd question to ask for sure, but not something that struck the child as out of the usual.

The elder was a bit surprised, but not for the reasons one might’ve expected- rather, this stranger looked an awful lot like someone he knew… who did happen to have the same name as him. What were the odds, right? Though, it might’ve just been coincidence.

“I’m- we’re Link.” Shrugging, he gestured for the other to enter the barn. The ranch owners wouldn’t mind a third freeloader, probably. ‘We’re just resting up here a bit before heading back out to help deal with more of those monsters. Can I help you?’

He should have expected this, after waking up in a house apparently inhabited by another him. If there’s already another Link in this world, why can’t there be even more?

Still, the young Link’s question catches him off guard. The way he words it is...

“I’m Link,” he responds, suddenly feeling defensive. For a moment he hesitates in the doorway, but curiosity wins out and he steps inside the barn, looking around.

“Um... I need a weapon.” He holds out the wooden sword he arrived here with. It’s already broken.

It’s an empty house he finds. A humble little place—not unlike his own. There are landscapes on the walls, living and dried plants, intricate wood carvings. The bed is unmade, and there are even dirty dishes on the sink.

They’re not old. This isn’t a forgotten ruin he’s exploring. Someone lives here, currently.

As Link walks solemnly through the house, a photograph catches his eye: someone who looks strikingly similar to himself, smiling and surrounded by friends. Lots of friends—a whole family, he guesses by the pictures of other people nearby.

Those people are probably still alive, but he can’t shake the feeling he’s seeing ghosts.

He leaves quickly, though not before taking a few snacks for the road. It’s not stealing if it’s his house, right?

He’s got a bunch of rations from one of the shelters simmering in a pot over a fire. It smells... interesting.
