So how can you contact artist about reporting their work?

While the artists' rights to where their art is reposted should be respected, it should be taken into consideration that many of the people who repost art on Tumblr aren't doing so out of malice or because they do not care about the artist. Most of them are merely uninformed of the situation.

We advise that before resorting to reporting them to the artist, you should first talk to the user who has unknowing disrespected the artist. Tell them about this issue. Educate them, but do so politely. Please remain civil if they do not understand what you are telling them even if they argue that they have sourced it or that they have not claimed it as their own. Tell them calmly that it is not enough to source artwork. Try to tolerate the slight aggression you may receive. 

Only when it becomes clear that they do not intend to change their ways or become extremely hostile about the situation should you resort to reporting them. It is your call when they have crossed that line. 

Without further ado, here is a guide on how to tell an artist about someone who has reposted their work and refuses to delete it. 

Remember that this is a last resort and should only be used if they refuse to see the error of their ways. Always educate them on the situation first.

There are many resources spread throughout Tumblr! In fact, someone was kind enough to add a link to a guide on asking for permission to our article, but, as we stated in a previous response, the admin in charge of this topic was too dumb to reblog it for everyone’s reference （。_°☆＼(- – )

Another popular one you can use can be found here. BONUS: This one includes links to templates for artists who speak Chinese or Korean. Pixiv is a multinational community. For any further questions on communicating with artists, please refer to raspomme’s FAQ concerning it.

A word of caution, though: artists are human beings with human emotions. As the information the anon who sent this says, artists get nervous when a faceless person monotonously asks them for permission. Add a personal comment to your message, just keep it simple enough so that an online translator can handle it.

It appears that the artist permission issue was more complicated than we believed when we first published our original article. Please watch out for a new article that will accommodate this new information regarding permission to repost art that will include its long history and the artists’ feelings.  We will keep you updated with any new information we find!

I would like to follow the rules for pixiv, but my whole blog depends on it. I don't really feel like stopping, but I do want to respect the artists work. How should I do this?

Here’s some good news, anon: your blog really does not depend on it. 

We will proceed to answer this question under the assumption that your blog specializes in sharing fanart. This fanart does not have to come from pixiv; there are many other resources from which you can find fanart to share! 

What better place to find beautiful artworks than from the artists themselves? Tumblr is a community filled with talented artists who pour their hearts and souls into their work, and it would really make their effort worthwhile if you could help spread their art through Tumblr by reblogging from them. In fact, one of the biggest reasons that reposting from pixiv is such a big issue is that many of the artists have Tumblrs already, and it is only right to reblog the original post rather than a repost, whether or not it was sourced.

If you should happen to fall in love with an artist and their works, feel free to drop them some fanmail. Artists really enjoy receiving feedback on the work they so graciously shared with the community. If they do not speak your language, we suggest keeping your message simple enough so that they can use a translator to get the gist of what you are saying. 

Another option you have is to ask the artists yourself if you can repost their art. There are many resources on Tumblr instructing on it. A while ago someone added a useful link to our article on how to ask permission, but the admin in charge of this topic was too dumb to reblog it for everyone’s reference. You have yet another option to retrieve content to run your blog: create your own fanworks. It may seem a little intimidating, but do not despair! You have all the potential to write stories, draw pictures, play musical covers etc; however, it is up to you to turn that potential into talent. All of these artists that we all admire spent years practicing to get the talent that they have today. Believe it or not, failure was a part of their paths to get to where they are, so don’t give up over any failure you may encounter. Instead allow those failures to teach you and help you grow. Do not trick yourself into believing that you cannot do it. 

TL;DR

You can reblog art from artists on Tumblr.

Artists are people. Show them you like their work.

Sometimes there are fanarts or fanfics that sweep the fandom and make everyone freak out, will you be here to alert people who aren't aware of their growing popularity in the fandom?

This is a very interesting suggestion, Anonymous. Alerting people to such fanworks would definitely fit with we what here at HFNN post. Unfortunately, with our extremely small staff, we are not even sure we know the difference between popular fanworks that sweep the fandom or personal preferences ^^; However, this is something we would like to do.

The best way to make such fanworks known to the rest of the Hetalia community, in our opinion, is is to make such alerts run on user submissions. A formal announcement of this new feature to our service will be made in the near future, but we will accept submissions now!

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Sourcing Art Is Not Enough

A myriad of beautiful fanart floats toward the top of your screen as you scroll deeper into your dashboard. You might even stop and reblog one here and there, but lately, you may have noticed something new attached to the sources for these fanarts.  Somewhere among the links to both the work and the artist’s page is a phrase along the lines of “Permission to post was obtained by artist.” It’s nice to know that there are people who go the extra mile and ask permission, but is it necessary?  The answer: Yes.

The Hetalia fandom has come a long way when it comes to sourcing fanart. Nowadays nearly every piece of fanart has due credit given to the artist which shows the fandom’s respect for the artists among us. This could not have been accomplished without a collective effort of the fandom to spread the awareness that there is a need to respect artists; however, providing links back to the original work and the artist’s profile may not be enough. It is not a well-known fact, but reposting artwork, whether or not it has a source, violates the terms of both Pixiv and Drawr, two of the most popular sources for fanart. Moreover, some of the artists on these sites are upset with their work being reposted to other sites without their awareness.

This is a screencap of Pixiv’s terms. There is not an easy way to put this, but as a whole, the Hetalia community is violating the highlighted rule by posting fanart without first obtaining consent. There are even artists who have removed their works from Pixiv to prevent their art from being reposted not only because they were not credited for their work but also because they did not give the reposter permission.  Now, the people who post art are not the only ones at fault. When one reblogs a piece of artwork that was reposted without the consent of the artist, he or she is giving support to the violation of Pixiv’s terms, as was the case with reblogging unsourced art. Because it is blatantly breaking Pixiv’s rules, reposting art without the artist’s permission is just as great an offense as not sourcing the art, and both could be considered art theft no matter what the intention.   

We should not worry though! Artists are usually very kind when requested permission to repost a piece of artwork and are known to grant it most of the time. Asking for their permission shows our respect not only for the time and effort they put into their beautiful pieces but also for their right to the fate of their art. We should also refrain from reblogging fanart that was reposted without permission. If you really do enjoy a piece of art that doesn’t have the artist’s permission to be on Tumblr, then you can like it and set your likes to private, or reblog it to a private (password protected) blog. Let’s use the same force we had when informing everyone for the need to source art to spread the need to ask permission from the artist before reposting his or her work!

hello! if you don't mind me asking, what the hell is couchtalia? sorry, i'm a bit behind the times.

Couchtalia was the name given to some movement in the Hetalia fandom from 2012 in which people would edit Hetalia characters onto objects, usually pun-related. For example, someone might have photoshopped Canada’s face onto an ear of corn and captioned it “Corn-ada.”

#619-731: A Tag That Will Live in Infamy

Without a clear answer, the bloggers left out of this “game” were left to their imaginations. They had few clues to work with. All they had to work with was:

There were a lot of Hetalia memes lying around.

It was limited to a select few bloggers.

It was a secret.

Putting these together, the lost bloggers drew the conclusion that #619-731 was exclusive to “popular” blogs. With this explanation these bloggers were convinced that those who were in on it created a sort of hierarchy within the fandom and put themselves at the top of it. The ones left out of it felt excluded by the secrecy of the tag and offended that they were not good enough to be welcome to it. It certainly did not help that some of the responses they got to their questions were perceived as condescending.  

With hostility bursting from both the participants of #619-731 and the angry bystanders, it was decided that enough was enough. Sometime during the night (EST), someone spilled the secret of the tag. As it turned out, it was an event started by invitations to bloggers who were long-time fans of Hetalia and would last from June 19th (6/19) to July 31st (7/31) in which they would reblog old Hetalia jokes and tag it 619-731.  The intention of the tag was to bring back a time when the fandom was ripe with puns and not so blighted by drama. It was not intended to be exclusive, and other Hetalian bloggers were welcome to join once they saw the connection between the memes and the tag.  The reported reason for the secrecy is that the creator of the tag wanted #619-731 to be like Couchtalia in which nobody was sure where it started but joined it anyway; however, it became the element of #619-731 that skewed the interpretations of it and thus caused the misunderstanding.  

Despite this released information, the damage was already done and the event that was supposed to last for six weeks ended after one day. In a cruel, ironic twist, what was intended as an escape from the drama of the Hetalia fandom invited more of it.

Today, the Hetalia fandom was left to cope with the aftermath of #619-731. Tempers were still high, and some are suspecting that a rift is growing between “old” Hetalia fans and “new” Hetalia fans.

TL;DR

619-731 was supposed to be harmless but went awry.
