This is Mohammed Mahmoud Al-Belbiese (hamodabady on ig and hamoodabady on tiktok). He passed away in an Israeli airstrike on Oct. 17.
The person who filmed this, Bassam Fal (bassamfaluona on ig and bassam_fal on tiktok), now documents the genocidal assault on Gaza as one of many journalists on the ground who are being targeted by the IOF for their work. Israel has killed over a 100 Palestinian journalists since October 7.
[Video description: A tweet by @/jinsjiddies from December 28 2023. It reads:
I remember seeing a Palestinian guy dancing dabke at his graduation in August and he went viral. I woke up today thinking about him and wondering where he is today… I found his account and he hasn’t posted since October… but this was him 🥺
Attached is a video of a young, skinny Palestinian man with brown skin and short cropped black hair dancing dabke with several others, wearing a black graduation gown with gold trim, in front of a crowd of similarly dressed fellow graduates.
The video is by TikTok user @/bassam_fal.]
I think what israelis and zionists do well is that they hyperfocus on random discourse and make generalizations that imply that people in solidarity with palestine are ridiculous and stupid. An example is when they jumped on the spotify wrapped discourse that went around: "How stupid pro Palis dont know that this is the time spotify wrapped drops every year." But me, a palestinian, didn't believe that theory nor fucking cared and many of us didnt. Another one theyve been focusing on is the "whos indigenous" discourse. And they conflate the movement for palestine with this meaningless disfourse instead of a movement to...free Palestine
meanwhile they deliberately erase the Palestinian presence in those protests in the discourse. Without palestinians being a literal diaspora, alot of these protests would not have been organized without Palestinians. I can't stand the "westerners are only protesting because they're uneducated" because who's in the west? Palestinians exist in the west. "All these white leftists know nothing" what about Palestinian leftists? We care about our homeland we are organizing to end the colonization and occupations of our homeland. Israelis always dismiss Palestinians in not just their experiences but their literal presence.
It's interesting because they hold themselves to a higher standard so anyone disagreeing with them just doesn't know what they know and theyll claim things like "only Palestinians and Israelis can speak about Palestine" but dismiss all palestinian perspectives that directly contradict their "knowledge" as anti semitic.
i've said this before but i suppose it bears repeating and clarification. it is arabs and palestinians who have suffered the most under islamist rule. we (middle easterners, revolutionaries, religious minorities, gender and sexual minorities) as people, understand what hamas represents better than israelis do, better than anyone does. we understand what the entire spectrum from political islam to outright jihadist extremism does. we understand dictatorship. we understand theocracy. we understand fascism.
the repression israel has created is so absolute, has destroyed civil, diplomatic, intellectual and peaceful avenues so absolutely, that it leaves no avenues for anyone to condemn hamas anymore. even the representative of hamas's ideological and political opponents, the PLO (which oversees the West Bank), is openly frustrated at the request to condemn hamas. and it's not because he sympathizes with them. he has absolutely no political, personal, ideological or economic reason to.
israel has bombed gaza in 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2021, each and every time with the declared intention of targeting hamas and instead murdering civilians en masse. everyone familiar with israel understands that 'hamas' is meaningless, that israel has no real interest in defeating them (and that defeating militant resistance to an occupation with military force is not possible), that they went so far as to fund them as their choice of preferred enemy. when palestinians hear 'hamas' they correctly understand that israel intends to kill everyone. it is, to use the lingua franca of this period, a dogwhistle. on october 7th, israelis were horrified to see this dogwhistle suddenly become an actual whistle, but nothing else changed except for the intensity and savagery of their attacks on gaza. instead, the more they say hamas, the more they murder civilians en masse, just as they always have. everyone in gaza has said "this is not new, just worse." they have always understood that they are the target. no amount of condemning hamas, being a good palestinian, a good civilian, or even a newborn will change that.
this includes all of hamas's ideological opponents and so-called victims as well. peace activists, intellectuals, palestinian christians, and queer palestinians alike are not condemning hamas right now. they can't because they are busy fighting for their lives and homes against the israeli occupation. if you understood the personal toll this takes on them, if you understood how deeply their trauma runs, you would understand just how evil the israeli narrative on hamas is for all palestinians.
if you want a plurality of palestinian opinion, get rid of the israeli apartheid state. if you want tolerance, get rid of the israeli apartheid state. if you want israelis to be safe in their homes from the threat of hamas militants, get rid of the israeli apartheid state.
the truth is, there is a base and deeply evil racism at the core of asking to condemn hamas, especially by those who would never condemn israel or the violence it requires to maintain itself. it presumes that they have the right to ask for a condemnation of child murder, without ever giving an apology for child murder or the promise to stop murdering children. ghassan kanafani once called this "a conversation between the sword and the neck."
it is absurdity in full display, a macabre delight in impunity disguised as moral superiority. more than treating every palestinian as a terrorist in interrogation, more than its dehumanization and islamophobia, it is at its core asking "do you agree our children are more important than yours?"
and lest you forget, Israel's current minister of national security has already said it directly. as he famously once told arab-israeli reporter mohammad magadli, “Sorry Mohammad, my right to life precedes yours, that is the reality.”
in many ways, that's far more honest than asking "do you condemn hamas?"

Hey y'all, it's that time of year again!
My daughter (🇲🇽🇰🇷) is turning 7 in a week!
She currently lives with mi mamá in Mexico (America is NOT safe) but if anyone wants to get her a gift, y'all can send to my P*yP*l, K*-F*, or C*shM*: $StonerBrujx so I can send it to mi mamá and she can throw her an amazing birthday celebration 🎉
Anyone that follows me knows I'm stuck in America while I short out my medical drama (I'm ♿), so I can't be with my baby for her birthday, but I still want to make sure she has everything she needs and she's the happiest she can be, even if I can't be with her in person and only in spirit
RBs are appreciated!
고맙습니다!

Please help a homeless trans woman stay warm during an ice storm!
Charlotte is a trans woman who is living in her car. Right now one of the tires is almost completely shredded and it is extremely dangerous to drive on the ice. It is also way to cold to safely sleep in the car. Please help her get enough money to fix her tire and get a motel and some food for the night. If 10 people send $25, that’s enough!

im a political lesbian's worst nightmare (multigender. straight trans male lesbian. gay man but in the wlw kinda way. i have 500 genders. all of them contradict eachother. im the sexiest butch boygirl alive. This is why I just call myself a dyke lmao)
recently i've been going into stupors for like 20-40 minutes where i'm just completely absent from the world and over the past week i've done a lot of reflecting and researching and OOPS does it turn out I have a lot of catatonic symptoms...
but no matter how much i surf the web i can't find anything on coping with them aside from taking meds (and i'm in like the three month long waiting period in getting referred to a psychiatrist. ugh.)...is there really nothing else that can be done with them? i have physical education next semester and i have no idea how to explain my symptoms to whoever my teacher will be. im thinking of going to my guidance counsellor but no matter what they can do to accomodate me im still just going to not be able to function normally in that class.
do you have any resources on how to deal with catatonic symptoms aside from meds, or at least how to explain them to non schizospecs?
to me this sounds more like dissociation. cause ive experienced both dissociation and catatonia and theres a distinct difference for me (and accounts ive read of others). this is purely my opinion based off this ask, i am not a mental health professional, just someone with experience.
dissociation you are not aware of your body, or viewing yourself from the outside or through an altered perseption. its common for people dissociating to feel absent from the world. i think its great that you are able to tell how long this goes on cause i know for me and plenty of others we cant really tell how long it goes on. spacing out is even a form of dissociation that falls on the less severe end of the spectrum. and that form is extremely common, i dont think ive met a single person who has never spaced out or lost chunks of time doing so. and dissociation is pretty common too, it comes in a lot of forms and is brought on by many disorders, trauma or stress. for me i have OSDD, so i dissociate very frequently and severely as a result of my childhood traumas. as far as treatments go, it usually is some sort of therapy to adress the cause of the dissociation. for me that was EMDR therapy that i found very helpful. as far as accomidations in school go, id advise you to go to your student resource center. for college there is usually an ADA office, for middle/highschool there is the counselors office. both usually require a formal diagnosis, or a letter of recomendation from a professional for you to show what your disorder/symptoms are and then you can tell them what accomidations you need for it.
catatonia in my experience is very different. i am very aware of my body. i am seeing the world as clear as i normally do, and i just simply cannot move at all or can only do one motion over and over again. for other catatonics they can appear agitated, be in strange positions, speak in echolalia and other symptoms that arent shutting down completely. for me, i feel trapped, and i tell my body to move as i usually do and it just cant. its extremely distressing, i feel broken, and im screaming and moving on the inside, but totally quiet and motionless on the outside. and if i am able to move one joint, ill move it over and over in an attempt to get some sort of help. catatonia usually occurs in disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar, autism spectrum disorder, and in many medical conditions. it is seen as a pretty severe symptom because it literally stops all physical functioning. and yes sadly there isnt much treatment besides medicine and just waiting it out (like ive done every time ive had it). from my experience it doesnt matter what people say or do around me, ill understand them perfectly, but it still wont snap me out of it.
from the outside these two symptoms can look the same, someone not moving and staring blankly. but according to the DSM, catatonia is not a form of dissociation. and although there isnt many public accounts of how catatonia feels, i have never heard anyone describe it as "completely absent from the world". but i have heard countless times people describe dissociation like that.
its also worth noting that not being able to move the body at all even if you want to can be a symptom of a medical condition, and if you have the chance i think its worth bringing up to a dr.
but if it really feels like being completely absent from the world i think thats something that a lot of people understand the experience of. spacing out is extremely common. and many people i know, people who do not have dissociative disorders, have experienced times where they spaced out and lost chunks of time. im not trying to downplay it or say its not cause for concern, but if you think the words fit, i think explaining it to other people as "spacing out" or "dissociating" will have a lot more people understanding what it is and how to work around it.
sorry for this very long answer, its just an intresting subject, and i have lots of personal experience with both and i want more people to understand the difference. once again i cant say for sure if you do or dont have catatonia. but i think dissociation is something that would be worth your time to research. and articles comparing the two are lengthy and talk more about underlying causes, while sadly i couldnt find anything comparing how they both felt, i do have my own experiences to talk about and hopefully explain it from the pov of the person experiencing it rather than the dr observing it.
in your experience, what should a bystander do if we see someone who might be experiencing catatonia? i reckon it's not as easy as "shake them so they snap out of it" but i've never encountered any advice for it.
personally, ive never found anything helpful to me. the times i was catatonic i either had someone yelling at me to move or i was alone. ive had my partner ask me this question before and honestly i said just try to move me. all i want in that moment is to move its all im thinking about, so i would want someone to move me around. i really dont think this should just be done on anyone especially people who havent said this is okay. generally you should probably get someone to a hospital just in case its caused by something medical, and if you cant move them there yourself maybe call emergency services. it truly depends on the person tho, i know for me it usually passes within an hour so id rather just wait it out and be moved around by people i know and trust. think about what you would want in that moment aswell, and yes shaking someone or telling them to move wont help.
i've been meaning to write something for a while now about how misinformation is not a partisan issue, it's just an issue in general. i was mulling over writing something about how infowars waterboards statistics into saying whatever alex jones wants – i'll still probably do that in the future – but it's not something that exactly supports my thesis here.
but, lucky me, i had a perfect example fall into my lap this week.
so, was andrew tate taken into custody over twitter beef with greta thunberg? the short answer is "no" but i'll elaborate.
here's the primary romanian news report about the cops taking the tate brothers into custody. the way that this has been reported in US news media has basically been that a pizza box in andrew tate's video response to thunberg helped romanian authorities confirm his location. here's a daily beast article that insinuates this:
In a video rant he uploaded to Twitter, in which he smoked a cigar and tried to brush off the online spat, he unwittingly displayed a pizza box from a local pizza chain—alerting authorities looking for him to his presence in the country.
here's the problem with that, though – none of the romanian journalists who reported on this story said anything about the pizza box thing. there's also a huge problem with these stories just... citing each other.
if you dig through the citation loop long enough, you end on this daily star article that cites tweets (jurnelism!) from, of course, alejandra caraballo
According to Alejandra Caraballo, a writer and clinical instructor posting on Twitter: “Romanian authorities needed proof that Andrew Tate was in the country so they reportedly used his social media posts.
(as an aside, if you follow her on twt, i'd heavily recommend against doing that. she spews bullshit like her life depends on it and i think this is inexcusable.)
these are caraballo's tweets in question:
the source for this is the romanian article i linked to earlier in this post. it doesn't say any of this. at least, the english translated version of it doesn't. for what it's worth, i'm not a romanian speaker, and i don't have any benchmark for judging if google's translation service is missing linguistic nuances. here's what it actually says:
Sources close to the investigation stated, for Gândul , that shortly after the completion of the computer expertise, the authorities waited for the right moment to catch the Tate brothers, who were always out of the country.
After seeing, including on social networks, that they were together in Romania, the DIICOT prosecutors mobilized the special troops of the Gendarmerie and descended, by force, on their villa in Pipera, but also on other addresses.
it's also probably worth pointing out that tate's villa was previously searched in april. while the article does say that social media was used to help confirm their location, it doesn't say anything about pizza boxes. and, like, given that tate is a prolific social media poster and was tweeting out videos of romania on sunday, i think it's safe to assume they had a wealth of other information to go off.
and if you don't want to take my word for it, nyt and wapo both reported that the spokesperson for the romanian prosecutor presiding over the case denied the pizza box thing:
Speculation online centered on whether a distinctive pizza box featured in one of Mr. Tate’s tweets to Ms. Thunberg had helped lead the authorities to him, but Ramona Bolla, a spokeswoman for the Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism, told The New York Times on Friday that that was not the case.
anyway, ain't it funny how caraballo's made the fuck up pizza tweet got 76 million views, 97k retweets, and 525k likes, while her appended correction got 78k views, 100 retweets, and 820 likes. her initial "source: my mind" tweet is still up. ain't. it. funny.

By the way, the southeastern USA is considered a humid subtropical climate. Alabama and Tennessee and Georgia and the Carolinas and Tennessee and all that stuff, that's considered to be subtropical instead of regular "temperate"
For some reason I did not know this. Maybe it just seemed too "exotic."
The funniest part of gaining plant knowledge is realizing that regular people in the states I've been in think the place they live is just, boring and normal.
Like, NO! You live in a paradise of rare, exotic biodiversity! Kentucky has the world's most extensive cave system full of rare cave animals evolved to live in a sunless underworld! Do you know where these grow wild?
