hiya, trainers â we've been hearing a few reports online of a few international trainers entered into the 2025 worlds in california having their visas / visa applications to get into the united states rejected, and are potentially looking to write a bulbanews story about it. would you happen to know of this happening to anyone else?
I think this might be my new magnum opus
I used to be mad about "whole language" reading approaches in theory but now I work with school-age kids and I am mad about it in practice.
the word is "commute"
kid: complete?
me: do you see a P in that word?
kid: uh.... compare?
me: where are you getting a P??? sound it out.
kid: com... complete?
me: is that a P after the M? sound it out.
kid: *stares blankly*
me: [oh right, nobody taught them how to do this. fucking hell...] okay, we'll do this together [like it's kindergarden even though you're thirteen years old...]. what sound does C make?
I am not a reading teacher or a dyslexia specialist but I'm having to do remedial phonics instruction for middle schoolers because nobody ever taught them how SO THEY CAN'T FUCKING READ
I cannot overstate how much these kids are just making wild guesses when I ask them to read something. Because that's what they were taught to do. If you don't know a word, use context clues and make a guess at what you think the word might be.
Which is a fucking insane approach to reading, by the way, and I could rant about this forever because this makes absolutely no sense and I cannot figure out how the entire educational field was duped into thinking that this makes a lick of sense.
But I also want to emphasize that even kids who are decent readers have this problem. I work with some kids who straight-up can't read, but even my kids who absolutely can read will just guess wildly at an unfamiliar word. Those kids will go back and sound it out if I force them to, because they can read, so they have the necessary decoding skills. But they have to be pushed to do it and reminded several times to quit fucking guessing and read the actual letters on the page, Jason.
For example. I have a kid who is actually a pretty strong reader - probably one of my best.
The word was "disagreement."
He made a couple of guesses - some nonsensical, but after pushing him to sound out the word, he got closer. He kept saying "dis-age-ment" and "dis-argue-ment."
And I said okay, let's break this word down. Is there anything in here you recognize?
"The beginning is 'dis' and the end is 'ment' like argument, but I don't know the middle."
Great! Let's pull the middle out. I wrote the word "agree" on the page. Do you know this word?
"Age? Argue?"
SOUND. IT. OUT.
"Ag... agriculture?"
Jason the love of god. I drew a line in the middle. Ag/ree. Sound out each part.
"I don't know."
JASON. I wrote them out on opposite sides of the paper. Ag...........ree. What sound does ag make?
"Ag?"
YES GREAT FANTASTIC. Now come all the way over here. Ree. Sound it out.
"Are?"
JASON. R. E. E.
"Rey? Ree?"
Yes, thank you, it's Ree. Put it together.
"Ag...ree? Oh! It's disagreement!"
YES. EXCELLENT. THANK YOU. WHY WAS THIS SO HARD?
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
#however the situation is better in liberal states that invest substantially more money into education than conservative states
As much as I wish that was the case, "Jason" and all of his classmates are students in a strongly blue state with some of the highest educational spending per student in the country.
I'm not saying the situation is better in red states - I've seen what my friends who are teaching in Texas are dealing with and the situation is dire. I'm just saying it's less of a red/blue or funding issue than you might imagine.
huge fan of when the good guys are themed on dark colors and spiky scrappy punk aesthetics and the bad guys are themed on light colors and angelic imagery and order. always such a banger.

two notable things about Wolfram:
itâs not AI. Itâs basically just an enhanced search engine, but it will prioritize making any calculations it can to directly answer your question. if you ask âhow many piano tuners in Chicagoâ
it will first search databases for direct information provided by a source, rather than return 3 pages of links to piano tuners advertising their business. If it didnât find one, then it would go âaverage number of piano tuners in a population is x/y, by our databases that do store that, Chicago is this size, therefore there are likely this many piano tunersâ
2. that means that it isnât always a reliable source. It might be misunderstanding a database or source, it might be drawing from a wrong source, and it doesnât prioritize links, (doesnât even always provide them), so it can be difficult to double check itâs work. Itâs worth plugging things into for quick answers, but if you need solid answers you need something you can double check.
its possible to grow in your knowledge in a way that is very destructive to what you thought you knew as a writer.
plant blindness is very useful for writers because it allows them to give their settings placelessness. write stories that "could be set anywhere." I used to imagine placeless places. post-apocalyptic wastelands without trees, towns amidst long roads and cornfields.
Now I know that along the paths or in the cracks in the concrete, the weeds are growing. And a weed is an ecosystem, and an ecosystem is a Somewhere, a network of tethers to a land that is rooted in deep time. Plants are a clarification of where and when we are, and what happened, and what people did to the land, and how long ago that was, and whether they are still doing it. Everywhere is land, everywhere has ecology and geology. The omission of the plants in any setting feels like intrusive clouds of amnesia or jarring black bars censoring part of the reality.
I am conscious of the presence of land in my stories. I am conscious that the land is the ultimate progenitor of the characters, plot, and setting. I am aware that there are plants, which make the setting into a Place with a history and ongoing present.
the way I used to write is irretrievable. places are not just scenery, they are narratives of history, destruction, renewal, energy flow and cultural values. The plants are a driving force with their own agency. I can't not write about the plants!

Another layer of fun. The first time I applied for a passport I was told my birth certificate was fake. It was the original. Literally the same piece of paper. But the state that issued it used to do half pages, so the government in other states, and then, the federal government wouldnât accept it as real.
I had to get a new copy of it, which required a separate process, so I could then reapply for the passport. At one point they misplaced my submitted documents so there was a couple extra weeks. And then the earliest passport appt was like 9 weeks out.
If you changed any part of your name for any reason â Did your parent remarry and changed your name when you were little? â go start the process. You have no idea how many hoops it takes.
I donât know if this will be in place. I donât know if there will be another election. Start this process anyway. Right now.

Hi all! WOW! THANK YOU SO MUCH for the warm response to my Non-binary Bestiary zine. I had this idea a year ago and started the questionnaire then but got busy / let it sit to the wayside, but now that it's 2025 I'm gearing up for Pride 2025 and I wanted to make something that could really change the world. There are not many books on all of the vastness of non-binary gender, and so I am working on taking y'all's lived experiences told to me and making infographic pages to introduce people to all the different ways one can be non-binary. Think of it like a "POKEDEX OF NONBINARY PEOPLE" done in a way where people can find themselves in the text of it, with non-binary people talking about how they knew they were x gender(s) and/or lack thereof, so more people can come out and live happily using this zine as a launching point. i want it to be accessible for kids to be able to read it too, so I'm going to make it cute and cool but still serious. Super excited!!! AHH! Thank you so much @harpyjack for your help with getting these out there. Your efforts astound me and I am so grateful for you and community's help. <3 Let's do this!! My goal is finishing the zine by May 2025 so I can release it by June for pride month at my biggest pride event of the year. I will be selling it for $10 I think, since it will be so large. Stay tuned and feel free to join my newsletter for more off-site updates on my work.
Popping this over to my ART BLOG here too since this is my upcoming largest project and one of my biggest publications for 2025. I am working hard on this and can't wait to bring it to reality for y'all! WOOHOO!

Leaf your leaves on the ground (no, seriously.) They provide so much for bugs, places to lay eggs places to hibernate. This comic does a great job at showing WHY we don't see our little friends as often, because our systems and social expectations are anti-earth and anti-life. Don't eradicate your friends (maybe just that one) let the leaves lay

After months of fearing backlash, I decided to include the word "transgender" as part of my book description on Amazon and other stores. Will it get review bombed for "gender ideology?" Only one way to find out!
