It's so weird to me when people complain about Astrid becoming more "feminine" as she grows up, as if that takes away her strength and courage, as if she can no longer be tough if she's associated with traditional feminine qualities.

Specially when you consider how the fundamental thing that changes about her is that she becomes happier and more airy, thousands of years worth of pressure being taken out of her shoulders now that she doesn't have to fight in a war that for so long had dictated her life and future. You can already see how that change begins in the first movie after her flight with hiccup, but it's so blatantly clear in rtte; she's more cheerful, she laughs often, you can see how she's way more comfortable with herself.

And the thing is that she's still Astrid! She still has a bit of an anger management issue, she still isn't afraid to call everyone out on their bullshit, she always speaks her mind, and she never becomes a two-dimensional love interests, she's a very complex character with lots of flaws and strengths. And most importantly, she's still a warrior, that's still one of the more defining traits of her character and something she takes proud in exceeding in and that everyone admires and respects her for.

And I just feel like acting like all of that is erased because she also has more of a “girly” personality is rotted in misogyny and believing that girlhood is a synonym of weakness and superficiality.

#omg THIS #i remember when ppl hated her httyd2 design after it got revealed for the first time #how she looked much more feminine and less ‘badass’ than her httyd1 look #as if she isn’t just a kid who probably didn’t even have time to care for herself #bc she’s so busy training and surviving during dragon raids #like greasy hair scars and all that bc all she did was train train TRAIN #until hiccup and toothless happened and their lives finally changed for the better #OF COURSE she’s now carefree and happy #not only did she met and bonded with stormfly she also made friends and fell in love #like these ‘fans’ really called her design ‘lazy’ and ‘generic’#when her httyd1 look is the product of too much stress and weight being piled on her shoulders as a KID #idk but it just reeks of misogyny to associate girly women as ‘weak’ and ‘fragile’#and AND #a lot of us irl don’t look the same as we once did when we were younger #so i don’t get why astrid can’t have that glow up too (but hiccup can lmaooo)#she DESERVED that #she deserved to look pretty WHILE still being a warrior queen #anyways thank u for coming to my TED talk #httyd

Because as a fanfic writer, how was I supposed to write a modern AU and get away with calling people Snotlout?! Or… Fishlegs?!

With their middle names we’re given the opportunity to have them have realistic names, but horrible nicknames

Gary’s nickname is Snotlout!

Justin’s nickname is Fishlegs!

Laverne’s nickname is Tuffnut!

Eugene’s nickname is Ruffnut!

Harold’s nickname is Hiccup!

And then there’s Astrid. Astrid is just Astrid.

It would’ve been hilarious if Astrid actually has a basic middle name since they’ve thought about giving her one like the rest of the gang but they just never did it because (i think) ‘Astrid Hofferson’ is already a perfect name by itself lmao
