Wifies Pressure Plate Theory
When it comes to the Wifies and Parrot ending, I’ve sat for a long time trying to figure out what Wifies plan was in creating that pressure plate situation.
Wifies starts by asking Parrot to step on a pressure plate. Then Wifies steps on the other. Wifies says that if either of them step off then a bunch of TNT will explode, likely killing them. And we know that at least part of that is true because we see Wifies die in the TNT explosion.
But what was Wifies goal in creating this situation in the first place?
Why create a scenario where both of them are stuck on these pressure plates?
To trap himself and Parrot forever in this room? I don’t think so.
Firstly, we know Wifies doesn’t want Parrot to die. But in this scenario, if Parrot had stepped off the pressure plate then he would be dead.
On the surface, it seems that Wifies put himself and Parrot into a high risk No-win situation where neither of them could move or leave otherwise they would both be killed.
But this possibility would have been unacceptable to someone like Wifies. Parrot dieing is the complete opposite of what he wants. He would not take the risk.
Then Parrot reveals that he does have something in his inventory. The spyglass.
Seeing this, Wifies says a very important line:
‘Please Parrot, please, give that to me before you hurt yourself.’
Notably, Wifies doesn’t ask Parrot to throw the spyglass away. He specifically says to ‘give’ it to him. Yet the two of them are on opposite ends of a room stuck on these pressure plates. So how was Parrot supposed to give the spyglass to Wifies without stepping off the pressure plate and supposedly blowing them both up? It doesn’t make sense. The spyglass definitely wouldn’t have been able to reach Wifies, even if Parrot threw it.
Unless Parrot still had the ability to safely step off the pressure plate to give the spyglass to Wifies.
My theory, though very tragic, is that Wifies had lied about the TNT exploding if Parrot had stepped off the pressure plate. I believe Wifies rigged the TNT to explode only if Wifies himself stepped off his own pressure plate. It wouldn’t have exploded if Parrot had stepped off his.
If you watch carefully, when Wifies tells Parrot to step on a pressure plate, Wifies is already standing very close to one of those pressure plates. Parrot, likely being very angry and feeling betrayed, deliberately chooses the pressure plate farthest away from where Wifies was standing. I believe that Wifies was counting on this and was emotionally/psychologically manipulating Parrot into choosing the farthest away pressure plate specifically. Which is why Wifies stood near the one that would have the actual TNT detonation. After all, Wifies knows Parrot very well. He would have created circumstances that protected Parrot and manipulated him into choosing the safe pressure plate.
To support this theory further, if you watch the actual TNT explosion, it starts mainly from the side of Wifies pressure plate and does the most damage in that area. Meaning that pressure plate is likely where most of the TNT was located and where the detonation was.
Additionally, if you listen, you can hear that the TNT trap only becomes active after Wifies steps onto his pressure plate. You hear nothing when Parrot steps on his. Which is why Wifies waited for Parrot to step on his first.
So what was Wifies trying to achieve?
I think Wifies was trying to create a scenario where Parrot was forced to do something in particular. That something could have been a couple things:
- Forcing Parrot to trust Wifies or save Wifies in a ‘deadly’ scenario.
- Forcing Parrot to save himself or go back on their own morals. Such as through making a deal with Wifies.
Wifies goal was to get Parrot under his control, so he could continue protecting him. Through this no-win situation, Wifies would force Parrot be the one who chooses to do that to himself. Wifies wanted Parrot to choose to be controlled, to be protected, and to be safe.
That is what Wifies considered to be their fresh start. Even if Wifies had supposedly ‘killed’ his prior self/morals to get there.
But in end, Parrot still had the old Wifies on his side. He had the spyglass. So Parrot left, thwarting Wifies plans.
Tragically, this would mean that if Wifies had let the spyglass despawn, he would not have died but would have been stuck there permanently. (The one who stays stuck in the cave).
But Wifies, probably coming to the ultimate conclusion, still decided to step off the pressure plate in order to pick up the spyglass one last time.
