This is true of the manga, but I love how the anime accentuates the absolute physical trust the apprentices have with Qifrey. Specifically with Agott, the way she is so ready when Qifrey says “hang on tight, I need my hands free” to cling to him a mile into the sky, and then in the latest episode, how, as soon as she impacts Qifrey while flying to him, she makes no move to save herself, she just curls into him and trusts that he will keep them from falling.

And I think it works as a signal to the audience, to subtly go “hey, I know we don’t trust Qifrey right now, he’s being shady, but we can always trust him to protect the physical wellbeing of his kids. Remember that.” Idk man maybe I’m getting too attached to a teeny detail but aaaaaaghhhh that’s her dad.

Olruggio: I specialize in fire magic due to its practical applications as a light source, a heat source, and a way to fend off predators. My signature spells are all about making people feel safe or comfortable, which I suppose could be read as symbolic of my larger character motivations.

Qifrey: I specialize in water magic because I fucking hate it.

I know the picture frame is recurring motif through the whole series, but I've always found these two chapter covers side by side to be particularly striking. The many many layers of Qifrey versus Olruggio remaining the same through every slice of time.

Olruggio, creator of light. Olruggio, who invented fire that doesn't burn and still felt the need to make it safer. Olruggio, whose creations fend off the dark all around the world. Olruggio, who extracted his best friend from the cold and the damp and showed him the beauty of the surface. Olruggio, the man who will set himself on fire to keep those he loves warm. Olruggio, the sky's kindest, most radiant star.

What Olruggio's job is: report any forbidden or suspicious activity from Qifrey or his apprentices. What Olruggio does as "part of his job": Keep the girls from getting sick, comment on teaching approaches, enforce meals and bedtimes, teach his own moral and practical lessons, use magic to make sure everyone is warm and cozy at night. What Olruggio doesn't do as part of his job: report any forbidden or suspicious activity from Qifrey or his apprentices.
