Have you ever seen Senna's McLaren Honda MP4/5 with this different air intake and airbox design? It was only tried by Senna at Hungaroring in practice and never raced.
The modifications featured "Ferrari-like" air intakes, which were designed for a lower profile. The redesign was an attempt to gain aerodynamic advantages by altering the airbox, possibly to direct more airflow to the rear wing.
