Can we just take a second to talk about the absolute beauty that is this entire section of the game??

Ellie (14 years old!!) had almost been raped and murdered if Joel didn’t show up when he did. That’s going to play on anyone’s mind, regardless of what age you are, but as a young teen, that’s especially difficult. The first half of this section, Ellie is understandably distant and withdrawn. If you look at her the next time you’re playing that section of the game, there is a physical distance between her and Joel again. She forgets when Joel tries to boost her up because she’s so lost in her own head.

Suddenly, she sounds excited again and runs off. The player, having been conditioned to be on edge at all times, is instantly concerned. But as we learn what she’s chasing, we realise that this is a little glimmer of Ellie’s childhood that manages to poke through after such a traumatic event.

Ashley and Troy both play it so gorgeously and every single time, I cry from the second Ellie drops the ladder because the wonder and awe is INSTANTLY back in her voice as she sprints along the corridors and Joel tries to keep up! Then when they actually see the giraffe, there’s no stopping the tears. I sit on the roof with them watching the giraffes for a good 5 minutes every single time I play the game because I know what comes next.

God, I love these characters so much
