I’m crying because of that dreaded tag – Major Character Death

And I can only blame myself because I’m the one who wrote it.

Fellow writers out there – do you sometimes find that a certain song just grabs you? You’re in the middle of a perfectly normal day but it stops you dead, because there’s no stopping it when you hear it. The melody, the voice, the lyrics – they transport you unannounced in front of your favourite OTP, and you see the most ‘perfect’ death scene. It’s heartwrenching.

One of them is about to die, it’s unavoidable, and that’s the moment when they know. Theirs is a love absolute and it’s the only wholeness they’ll ever know. The one leaving is at peace, triumphant even (damned circumstances). But the one being left behind... In that moment, that’s you. You’re completely broken. No matter how much time passes, you know you’ll always be broken. 

It’s also the moment of your worst selfishness. You can’t imagine anything worse – a life alone, the unspeakable loss, to miss them so much until your heart bleeds... And yet you’d do anything to switch places. You’d do it in a heartbeat. No matter how much you protected them until now, in this one thing, you would doom the one you hold most dear to a life of heartache and misery you can’t imagine facing yourself.

All because of a blasted song.

You write it up. All the while wondering why. You’ll likely never share it, it’s just too fricking sad, but you write it.

Months later you hear that song again. You dive into that file that you’d labelled ‘MCD THIS IS AWFUL’, and you read it, and you cry again. And then you go and hug your dearest in real life because you’re reminded how precious they are.

I can’t bring myself to delete that file and I know I’ll be back again sooner or later.

Hanyu is proof of Pooh Bear’s face’s superpowers! ...and I’m inspired for 2019

Because look, channel Pooh Bear’s face and BAM, you have epic awesomeness and spellbinding grace 😄❤️

I’m greeting the New Year with the legend that is Hanyu Yuzuru. It goes without saying that he is peerless on the ice, but it's specifically what he does when he falls down that’s my inspiration as we enter 2019. Even when only able to train quads in his mind for months or needing crutches to walk, even under the immense pressure placed on his shoulders, he still wins golds and sets new records along the way. The sheer mental resilience to keep fighting is phenomenal.

I was inspired to start skating when Hanyu won the 2014 Sochi gold, and this year I’m training to enter my first (novice!!!) competition. This year I want to see how much of his mental fortitude I can emulate, in my writing and elsewhere.

So my mindset for 2019: I have my sights set on what I want to achieve and I’m ruddy well GOING for it.

I hope when I look back on this year, and in another 5 years, I’ll be able to think, ‘Yeah, I did that’.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy, kind, tolerant and inclusive year everyone!
