A piece of concept art from the finale of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, showing Rodan, Mothra, Kamacuras, Kumonga, Anguirus, Baragon, an unknown Titan, and Gamera (!!!!) hailing to the King.

I was hoping to scan this from The Art of Godzilla: King of the Monsters myself, but the book is simply too big for my scanner; I’d have to do it in parts and stitch it together in Photoshop, a tedious and imperfect process. Even more maddening, the text doesn’t say who drew this piece or if the many familiar monsters within were meant as placeholders. (There’s also another rendition of this scene at the end of the book with Gigan among the Titans.) So I’m going to have to do a bit of legwork to figure out what was going on with the Guardian of the Universe in particular…

豊年魚は、江戸時代に淀川に現れた怪物で、姿を現すと豊年になるといわれている。　　　　当時の資料には「慶応2年（1866年）、淀川に奇妙な大魚が現れた。昔にも同じようなことがあり、その後 数年間は大豊年が続いた。よってこれを豊年魚と名付けた」と記されている。　なお、この豊年魚には、黒い背筋にコケが生えており、目は鏡のようで、姿はイタチ、足はカメに似ているという特徴が挙げられており、体長は約2.3メートル、重さは約70キロだったと記録されている。
