Post 18 | Music and Post Production

Once again it’s been a while, but I promise it’s because I’ve been working full throttle on this movie and it’s just hard to find the time, y’know?
Since my last post I’ve been working on the part of this production that is muuuuch more relaxing than the shooting part. Working with my composer, Josh Bucchi, and playing around in After Effects is time consuming but not nearly as stressful as lighting and animating a 13 second (312 image!) take with three moving characters and a rack focus. This post will lightly overview some of the things I’ve been working on without giving too many spoilers (maybe this blog is just one huge spoiler anyway I guess). Once I have more time, I’ll try and put together a better breakdown of my process in Post production.
Music
It has been such a treat to have a composer available to make music specifically for my film. Josh, in particular, was a pleasure to work with as I felt as though he really understood this film and so we were able to bounce ideas off of each other to make a really awesome score of four different and lovable tracks.
The final music design is what I was hoping for: fun, approachable, and a bit sexy. Here is a clip I took of musicians rehearsing some sexy sax for the opening song. I’ll be mixing the music at McGill in greater detail in a couple days with an engineer and Josh.

Post Production
During pre-production and production I didn’t really get the chance to get a proper sense of the post-production design I was looking for for this film. I always had an idea that I wanted the colour scape and finish of the film to be warm, a bit old looking, and professional, but I never thought about how I’d achieve that. For this reason, these past weeks have been dedicated to research and tests. I met with an alumni friend and past classmate, Sindre, the After Effects wiz, and he got me started on a great foundation for the work that followed.
My greatest post-prod challenge for this film is with the hallucination scene. I needed the raw stop motion footage to be composited with both green screen footage and a still background to look as though it is both a hallucination and a flashback, without being to scary/ ghostly. I began with a more old B+W film motif for this, with some classic Turbulent Displace effects, but the result was a bit too scary. It seemed like the character was dead.
A more recent iteration has brought back the colour, brought in some grain, and hopefully made the look more fun while still being old. This is a sample of what the final product MIGHT look like, but I’ve yet to get some feedback on this.
I think the second option looks more glamourous and fun, we’ll see if I have the time or the need to rework this.
Another example of the work I’ve been doing is for the liquid blood animation. For blood falling in the air I figured it would be such an unbearable pain (likely to end in tears) to animate blood falling from Lisa’s hand onto the floor in the air in stop motion. It simply was NOT worth it! So I figured I could marry some 2D animation and integrate it to pass. This was a simple feat, and I was excited to get back into 2D animation after a long hiatus, albeit this is the most minor 2D animation you can think of. I’m pretty pleased with the result, though I still need to tweak a few things. Here is a clip of one of two shots with blood animation. Need I say spoiler alert?

Post 17 | Animation
Once again, it’s been a while since my last post. And, once again, this is because I have been so preoccupied with production that I’ve neglected posting updates. Eeek! But now I’m finally done shooting, 5 weeks later! Here is a bit of a recap.
Animating
Since my last post, there have been tears and lots and lots of blood shed (mainly my puppet’s, only a bit of mine). However, in those few weeks of animation my animating skills have really improved significantly. Drawing from my experience at the Toronto Animated Image Society over the summer, with the great help of Toronto animator Evan DeRushie, I have learned to animate with more confidence. By this I don’t mean confidence in myself, but confidence in the puppet. In the past, and for past films, I’ve always been very gentle with my puppets. This might have saved them from breaking a lot of the time (for this film I have had a total of 7 armature breaks between two of the puppets!!), but it made the motion significantly more limited. Part of the reason I used to be such a timid stop motion animator was because I felt like I would have to move a body part so carefully so as not to move any of the rest of the body even a tiny bit.
So here is the key, that I’ve learned, to animating stop motion. The key is to do whatever you want to your puppet without fear and to use the wonders of modern image capture softwares (I used Dragonframe) to keep the animation smooth. For example, with my newfound confidence I will gladly bend Lisa’s (my protagonist) toughly tempered elbow joint with full, thus moving her entire body a couple centimetres to the side, and then with reasonable ease adjust the position toggling in Dragonframe. Dragonframe is certainly a godsend (I hate to provide free advertisement! but...). For more subtle animation, featured in the GIF below, Dragonframe allows me to create semi-unplanned actions and make them look natural. For most shots, I made a general plan and let the puppet and my accidents guide the motion. The result is one of my smoothest shots below (filmed in front of a green screen, discussed in further detail below as well).
In spite of my newfound confidence, these few weeks of animating were truly filled with an amazing amount of stress and obstacles. The puppets kept on breaking, 2 second clips could end up taking 6 hours to shoot, cameras were knocked, lights suddenly burst: all the fun unexpected caveats to stop motion animation. However, most of my shots ended up looking good in the end, which makes all the stress worth it.
Animating liquids proved to be easier than expected. I tried to suppress my anxiety of animating all the blood in my film (which is in at least 40% of my shots) before I got to those shots. However, using a mix of food colouring and hair gel, animating blood ended up being quite therapeutic and successful. I almost wish I had used more liquids in the film, as it really helps to remind viewers that they are watching stop-motion, which I personally find important for stop motion films. Here is one of the shots of blood (though one with a bit simpler bloodnimation). #glamourshot!
I also tried to suppress my anxiety of animating the large scale (to be read as “normal scale” outside of the stop motion universe) shots. The shots I’m referring to are those using the large (human sized) hand puppets for hand action closeups (I mean take a look at Lisa’s hand in the GIF above and try to imagine how hideous it would be in closeup). I really put off making any of the props or details for this part because I wasn’t prepared to think about it. However, when I realized the time had come to think about this shot I realized that this cluster of shots would be my least painful! Animating in full scale is extremely satisfying and significantly easier to control (at least in my case). The resulting shots are perhaps some of my favourites: they are detailed, they somehow even look live action but with my puppet’s hands. I am very pleased with these shots. Here is a still:
I figured I had to at least once animate myself with my puppets. And because I was so pleased with how little hell these hand puppets gave me (compared to LISA, who aged me ten years!!!), I honoured them by acting with them. These puppets looked very scary outside of the camera because they were floating hands attache to wires. See the GIF:

Another picture of me with Lisa sitting on a camera OmniSlider. I used the slider attached to both a tripod and a MagicArm to allow me to lock the camera in much deeper into the kitchen set. This particular arrangement was for a shot with a closeup of the fridge at the back of the kitchen.
Green Screen
I had animated using a green screen before for a past independent study, but that was without the pressure for the final footage to actually look good. This time I needed to make sure I did it right. For shots involving a character in the foreground that I wanted to easily be able to manipulate focus, and for shots that I needed to composite the Lisa puppet in the scene with herself, I shot in front of a green screen. In the studio space I was using there was a large spotty mixed green green screen for me to use.
Setting up for green screen was much more time consuming than expected. Though After Effects Keylight green screen keying tool is pretty advanced these days, it was still difficult to evenly light a large green space using only two lights (the rest I needed for my puppets). Lighting the subjects to match the final shot was also a challenge that I may or may not have succeeded at....we’ll have to see in post production. The green screen set up took an absurd amound of space considering the size of my puppets. The animating table had to be far enough away so as not to get any green reflection. But because I was using a very wide 20mm macro lens, this meant that a huge part of the green screen wall was in the background of every shot. Here is my excessive setup, and then after a picture of the tiny (relatively) puppets in an NSFW position...
This shot was quite a challenge because the puppet were not on their feet but still had to be tied down verrrry well. The (not ideal but workable) solution was to use wires to bind down joints (ie by the knees, by the torso, by the elbow) in parts of the puppet that couldn’t be seen in camera. I also superglued one puppet’s hands to the other’s legs because sticky tack was being a pain in the ass, and this was the last shot so why not have the puppets forever making love....
So again, I am finally done shooting! This was a very intense but educational experience. I struggled a lot and learned a lot, and am very ready to begin post production!
Here is a final celebratory picture of me and my favourite hand puppet--the one that never betrayed me and always animated exactly how I wanted it!. We are together in front of the green screen.

Post 16 | Set Completion, Frustration, and Shooting
This post is quite delayed but for a variety of good very frustrating reasons, the most recent reason being that I drafted a beautiful long picture-filled post last night and then my computer conveniently froze and shut down and I lost everything! So I’ll try to recreate it to a lesser extent today.
The other major reason is that I’ve been shooting! And I just have lost so much time to update this blog! I’ll review these past weeks chronologically.
Set Completion
I finished my set! Since the previous post, I mainly worked on the final prop details, including all the pivotal plot props. For the carrot pot, which I need to shoot in both large and small scale, I purchased the perfect normal size pot that I tried to make in small. I made the pot out of Sculpey and then had my talented friend, Teresa, paint the floral details to match.
I also made all the carrots and the knife prop, which has a great shine that I got from silver nail polish. Images can be seen below in the context.
After gluing everything down, and then making sure there were no hot-glue strands left in the set, I was ready to light! With the help of dearest Lori, I moved my set to the room next door to begin.
Lighting and Animating
Unfortunately, for technical reasons, I had to begin my shooting for this film with my most challenging scene to animate. The lighting, however, wasn’t too much of a struggle as it is an exterior shot. For this shot, I ended up using only two lights, and then a 3rd later to mimic a spotlight: one was used for direct sunlight--creating sharp shadows, and the second to light the painted blue sky behind the fence. I had a piece of foam core to bounce a bit of light into the dark parts.
The reason this first shot was so challenging is because of my hasty design for the spontaneously growing leaves. In this shot, the Mom character appears in the garden after Lisa begins to hallucinate plants growing and a carpet rolling out. My initial plan was to have the mother dance with nothing else moving in the scene. Foolishly, however, I had each of the leaves secured with only Dollarama sticky tack and a bit of electrical tape, and naturally they were really not secured at all. This meant that every time I had to touch the puppet to animate it, I would have to try and put back the leaves that moved out of place. After a bit of a breakdown once the leaves moved so much that I couldn’t put it back, I finally decided to just animate the leaves as well and go with the flow of fate. This was a hallucination scene after all, so I should have realized earlier that I had a bit more flexibility than usual. Ultimately, I think this was a happy, though initially dreadful mistake and the shot might be better now! Here is the setup I had:

The kitchen shot was a whoooole other story re-lighting. For this shot, I put a lot of effort into making the set a big variety of reflectivity. To contrast my past stop-motion film, I tried extra hard to make everything shiny to make for an interesting lighting scape. For this reason, lighting the kitchen to show off all the fun surfaces was quite a challenge. I started off with a basic light setup: two lights for the outside to be seen through the big window and glass sliding door, creating a nice realistic overexposed space and also lighting the kitchen interior quite significantly. The other light was the tiny christmas light put into the mini hanging chandelier. This was almost enough light, but I wanted the kitchen to be quite pink and lit enough to see everything. I struggled a bit with some creative solutions, one being to have diffused light bounced off white foam core, but this just white-washed my carefully pink designed kitchen. Finally I got the help of the brilliant Lydia Lorrain, a stop-motion filmmaker who had some great tips that truly tied the lighting together.
Lydia suggested that instead of bouncing light off of white foam core, I use a pink surface if I wanted to make my kitchen pinker. She also suggested that instead of leaving parts of my ceiling open or completely closed off, that I use plexi and brown paper to allow some diffused warm light into the kitchen. The final result was really perfect, and can be seen with the header image and this image below:

As of today, I’ve officially finished all my shots in the kitchen! Here’s a screenshot of my greening production schedule (yes means done!)!
For a lot of these kitchen shots, I’ve had to use an omni-slider, typically used for camera moves. I did use the slider for camera moves, but it was also useful to get the camera deep into the set where a tripod or magic arm wouldn’t reach. Here’s a pic of the slider oriented for the through-window kitchen shot, and of me looking through the window.
And lastly, here is a picture of poor Lisa, finally with her finger permanently cut off. Throughout these many weeks, Lisa has broken on me FIVE TIMES!!! It has been overwhelmingly frustrating having her leg joint dislocated after I had spent 3 months on her armature making sure she was tough as steel. Finally, today, I took out the joint and resoldered it to give it integrity once again. I hope this is the last time she’ll ever break because otherwise I might flush her down the toilet out of rage, which would probably be a bad idea. Cutting off her finger was not as rewarding as I expected :(

Post 015 | Set Construction and Puppet Faces
Wowowow it’s been two full weeks since an update. These past weeks, and then the next fews days have been/continue to be a huge time crunch to finish all the details on the sets and puppets. This post will address some of the things I’ve been working on since last post.
The first and foremost major task that, I’m realizing now, I blocked out of my memory because it was just too painful, was the creation of a dry earth texture for the outside sets. Because a simply painted brown clump didn’t look enough life earth, I decided to use real dry dirt mixed with sand to achieve the full effect. This included picking out all the white fertilizer bits from my dry soil (they screw up the scale illusion), painting the pre-browned plaster of paris I had used to make the forms of soil with gloss/glue, and then pouring the earth mixture on top. The problem with this was that it is veeeery difficult to, after this, make sure that there are NO errant, unglued pieces of dirt at the end. If there are any stray pieces, they will surely become visible once I’m animating, and they will be jumping around from frame to frame. SO: I had to pour earth, then flip the set over to dump off the soil (with the larger set I could only brush it off), then use my mini handheld vacuum to get out the pieces, and then reapply more soil to cover the uncovered parts, and so on and so on. After many attempts to make sure all the soil was gone (ie. using tape over the soil to collect any unglued parts), I put some hairspray to fix everything and voila!
Note that I also have some grass and a finish on the concrete. The grass is made with the same Dollarama blanket used for the carpet in the hallway, but painted. Also note the fancy new blinds behind the screen door! Made of cut styrene.
Different tasks around the kitchen included the finishing touches on the fridge, the creation of the butcher’s block from wood (pictured in the intro images), and more recently, the design of the vases and garbage can all made to look like a set! I figured out a ceiling light fixture, which uses a Christmas light inside an ornate napkin ring, with wax paper to diffuse the light a bit. I also made a tiny phone, which is one of the important useful props in the film.

A really exciting part of these past weeks was the use of a CNC paper cutting machine to make leaves! I knew I had to make a lot of leaves and I really wanted them to look more than just like shoddy cut paper by hand. I also was dreading having to cut so many leaves. SO, I went onto illustrator and made silhouettes of 5-6 different types of tropical leaves and had my friend, Hannah, use this cutter to cut the shapes out of hard bristol board I had painted green to save time.
In the end, Hannah gave me four sheets with the leaves neatly in place in their sheets ready to be popped out! I painted the sides of the white rim, attached a wire to the middle of each to be animated, and added some nice glossy sheen with podge and clear nail polish. A sample image can be seen in the intro garden pic, with some banana leaves attached to a Japanese fan to be animated later!! So cool!
I was also very fortunate to have my dear friend and print student, Maeve, along with costume designer Audrey, help me with the creation of the long carpet that unrolls into the garden in the film. I wanted to have the carpet printed with a pattern similar to the Copacabana beach walk, and that found in Astrud Gilberto’s performance in this one youtube video I thought was hilarious.
So I made a design and gave it to Maeve to print on canvas and it turned out really beautifully!

I also formatted and printed all the posters and artwork going to be going up on the wall. Earlier this month, I commissioned 5 of my artist friends to make some posters for Adam’s room with the given theme of him being a queer teen character in the 80s. The following picture is a small taste of what I have to put up soon. Also note the new brown door and Lisa’s new hair! Talk about the hair will come in another post!
Lastly, yesterday I spent all day making all of the miniature replacement mouths out of Fimo. Two of the three characters have dialogue, and all of the characters have a range of expression, which meant that I had to make 52 mouths in total. I made a plan of what mouths I needed by breaking up the dialogue and shots into small parts. I assigned each mouth a number, and then attached a metal rod to each one in order to slip into the little holes under their noses for replacement. Each mouth is then painted with gloss for some nice realism! Here’s some organization of Lisa’s mouths on top, still drying from the glue, and Adam and Jeffrey’s mouths on the bottom.

Post 014 | Set Construction
More set construction! This is a month fully dedicated to making my sets. All of my courses are concentrated into two days, which means I have five entire days a week to work on this set....and go reasonably crazy. Progress is slow and painful, but occasionally I can take a step back and be happy with how things are coming together.
Since last week:
I’ve completed the outside house wall- with “aluminum siding” created with jumbo glued popsicle sticks, a working screen door made with plexiglass and nylon sock, a removable window (for interior shots) also of plexiglass, and some cute shutters of mini stir-sticks and foam core.
I’ve also made the fridge over many days; a complex feat because it has to open and look good inside. The fridge is made from found laminated wood (which had a fridge like texture to it), foam core, plexiglass- for the inside shelves, and polystyrene for faux drawers and shelves. There is a christmas light on the inside giving a nice fridge glow, look at the open fridge door in the picture below!
Also note the colouring, I’m pretty happy with the colour scheme and how things are looking, though the green countertops are sort of hard to see in details.
I’ve also created a hallway and Adam’s bedroom reasonably quickly. The carpet on the floor is made from Dollarama blanket (a really easy nice fix!), foam core for door moldings, paper for wallpaper, and a conveniently miniature shelving unit!
This room, thankfully, can be pretty empty because there will be a lot happening in the foreground.
Lastly, I’ve put some lattices on my fences (look at the top of them, and in the pictures above). I’m struggling for some ways of achieving a dirt texture for the border of the garden (the lump of brown around the edges is attempt one....). I think I’ll use the same Dollarama carpet for grass; painted it actually looks quite good. It looks a bit like astroturf or disgustingly flat suburban grass, which is what I want!! In the centre is a test palm leaf I made out of bristol board, paint, and a wire for shape. I think this method’ll do the trick if I can’t think of something better.
This last shot is just a test for the shots through the window. Jeffrey’s in the back hall, and Adam is standing in for Lisa while she’s away with the costume construction artist for another few days. This shot isn’t framed how I imagined it, but I think I did the best trick I could to achieve it!

Post 013 | Set Construction
Over the break I spent many hours cutting and staining wooden jumbo popsicle sticks that I had to purchase online because somehow they are nowhere to be found the one time I need them! The reason I was doing this tedious task was to make the beautiful fence pictured above. This fence, using over 300 popsicle sticks, is made to be tall and robust in order to fill the frame and maintain stability. My wonderful friend and roommate graciously took on the task of hot gluing my varying sized popsicle sticks into the pattern pictured.
Though the fence will still be getting a nice lattice top to make it higher and for some added decor.
Additionally over the break, I had the chance to do some botanical research in sunny Florida! Florida is filled with the large leaved palms and tropical plants that continue to inspire me. Memories and photographs from this trip are helping me both with the design of the general set--set in a suburbia remarkably close to a lot of Western Florida--and of the garden hallucination scene. The following are a few notable pictures:

Once I returned to my basement dungeon studio, I had the chance to continue working on the Kitchen set. For the cupboards, I really wanted to achieve the colour and shine of the wonderful kitchen I wrote about in Post 003. Ultimately, I was able to do this by scoring into foam core and using the same acrylic pouring medium as I did for the floors onto the painted foam core. I added some shine by using strips from a paper thermal reflective cardboard box!
In this picture, you can see my work on the booth area of the Kitchen. I am not too please with the sides, but the booth is now topped with a cushion in a fabric I found at Fabricland. I’ve also created a matching table and counter space in mint speckled green, also sided with the reflective cardboard. The fridge is in early stages and will required sufficient planning. It will need to be functional: there is a shot where it has to be opened, thus the fridge needs an inside light and to be stocked with food. Today I cut some plexiglass with a CNC digital drill to make some fridge shelves. Note the fence showing through the window!
I am pleased with my decision to put almost all the sets on one foundation board because I expect it will result in some really nice shots. Above is a picture of how part of the backyard is oriented in relation to the kitchen. I’ve set up a forced perspective from both face-on areas, and the result of this is a mismatch in perspective through the windows that could prove interesting (or unprofessional....we’ll just have to see). Though it is not clear in the image, I’ve also used real concrete for the exterior patio patch! Things are moving!

Post 012 | Set Construction
Progress! Over the past few weeks I’ve been painting my puppets and beginning construction on my set. Above is a picture of my official progress as of the end of first semester (now I am taking a mandatory break in Toronto and Florida).
Progress has been much slower than I had expected, but ultimately feels worth it because I am quite pleased with how the set is looking for now. The floors took approximately 50% of the construction time because they were so rigorous, but I hope they will make the film!
To make the floor, I decided it would be a good idea to burn lines into wood to make a tile effect. In reality, this is a painstaking and time consuming process that could potentially have been done faster, though it did result in an interesting floor topography that I couldn’t have achieved from just painting dark lines.
After the lines were burnt, I painted everything in the most solid pink I could achieve, thus covering all the lines I had spent so long to burn. I therefore had to burn them again over the paint! Finally, I could pour the magic serum: Acrylic Pouring Medium. This substance is a form of epoxy that can be poured over a flat surface and it will spread out until it hits an obstacle, and will harden into a hard glass-like resin with non stick, and drillable. Most importantly it leaves a perfect shine!
Here I’ve taped up the sides of the floor to keep the Pouring Medium in the areas that I wanted.
I struggled a bit with choosing wallpapers. I really wanted a pop 80s feel with bright colours, and I also wanted to have an excessive pink theme, and I also wanted to have an absurd wallpaper pattern. Pre-existing papers at Deserres were expensive and not completely perfect, so I figured I could just make my own! Here is an initial print test (slightly discoloured because of CMYK vs RGB nonsense that I don’t care to fix):
Ultimately, the big bolder patterns worked well, and I thought it would be fun to play along with the carrot motif, as the protagonist cuts off her finger while she’s cutting a carrot. Putting together final patterns and colours, here is the final wallpaper:
The carrots are small and faded but they go nicely with the floor and hopefully with all the floral fabrics I hope to dress the set up with!
For the rest of the break, I’ll be doing the mundane task of cutting the rounded ends off of 300 jumbo popsicle sticks.....

Post 011 | Puppet Construction
It’s been a while! Since my last post I’ve progressed slightly on both my puppet construction and set building, but this post is about my puppets.
Thus far, the majority of my time for this film has been taken up with puppet construction for my five puppets, and finally I am at a point where I am ready to start making them some clothes and hair (likely another month’s work!).
After I completed the mold for each puppet I was able to get to the satisfying part: foam latex. A past prof, Erik Goulet, master of puppet armatures and foam latex enthusiast, kindly allowed me to do this tedious step at his house in his very own stop-motion cave garage. The process of mixing foam latex for model-making is reasonably tedious, fragile, and extremely toxic and stinky. For this reason, I told myself that I would only use this material for my puppets’ flesh if I could do it with Erik under his supervision.
To prep for this, I rewrapped all of the armatures in protective Teflon tape and spent about 1/2 hour each to register the armatures in the molds so that they floated in the middle and still closed properly with armatures inside.
After that, I spent a solid 8 hours at Erik’s house, first mixing new batches of foam latex for each mold, then injecting the fluid through a hole in each mold, and then baking for 3.5 hours.
After latex toxic city, I finally opened my molds to see 5 beautiful smooth spongey creatures in the shape of my plastelina sculpts! It was very satisfying to see. Here is a bad picture of the molds open. Note that each puppet has a hole where the mouth is, and this was intentional for me to be able to stick in replacement mouths.
While I forgot to take pictures further along the process, I will briefly describe the next steps. After these were done, I cleaned up all that spillover seams you see above with scissors and a woodburning tool. I patched up the burning scars with a bad quality liquid Pros-Aide (which meant that I basically put extremely sticky glue all over my puppets instead of filling latex holes like I wanted). After that, I spent a few days painting each puppet with acrylic/ raw-latex mix to cover the foam completely.
Next puppet post will hopefully be about clothes!!
Post 010 | More concept work
I’ve been doing a bit more concept work for this film. I’ve also decided that a better name might be Hi, It’s Your Mother for a title, but it’s still in the works.
Above is an image I rendered of a colour scheme for the kitchen scene in the film. Speaking with a past supervisor, Luc Otter, it seems like I may benefit from using some filters, noise, and blur to help keep the film looking professional even with the inherent dust and small moving parts that I simply won’t be able to control, but will be quite distracting if displayed in full HD.
For this reason, it seemed natural to give my film a 60s-70s “New in Technicolor” game-show look. I’ve always liked how the image in old TV shows has such an off but marvellous colour hue. I’ve also appreciated how the images are so crisp. So I think this might be what I go for in post production.
Post 009 | Puppet Mold-making
It’s been a while! That’s because this seemingly small step took wayyyy too long. Once I completed the armatures for all my puppets, the next step in puppet construction was to create the bodies surrounding them. The act of creating puppet’s bodies can be very long and strenuous.
For this project, I have chosen to use foam-latex as a medium for puppet flesh. This material is commonly used for [low budget] stop motion films because it can take on any shape a puppet-maker designs and will hold this shape even when it is pulled and pushed and manipulated, avoiding the problem you might have animating with clay.
There are a couple major pitfalls to this material however. The first is that it can look really gross or really clean, as latex can bubble up or get really dirty or look way too smooth, all things I would NOT want my puppet to have. This can hopefully be amended with a good paint job. I was pretty pleased with how my puppet from my last film, Oh, Mr. President, turned out, so I think if I achieve a similar look I’ll be in the clear.
The second major disadvantage of this medium is the sheer time it takes to get a final product! But here I am, and I did it, and I’ll briefly describe the process (of which I’m not even finished!).
Foam latex is a foam that expands into a space and then cooks and cures into that shape. In order to control the shape of foam latex, you need to put it in a mold made from a sculpt of the design you want. To begin this process I had to make sculpts of all my characters over their armatures out of an oil based clay, Roma Plastelina. The sculpt was done over teflon tape-wrapped armatures to protect them from rust.

This sculpt took me about 8 hours for each piece....not necessarily including the time taken to wrap them in teflon. But this isn’t even the worst part! Next I began the mold-making process. This involves the pouring of an Ultracol 30 (cement powder) mixture over the sculpts that have a wall of wet clay built up to a half-way point along the sides. This is to create one half of the mold. The bulk of time with this is making sure I have smoothed out all the wet clay around the sculpt and that it is exactly at a halfway point along the outline, because after the Ultracol dries, it’s permanent!
After one side for each of the molds dried, I did the same thing to the other side. Below is a picture of Boyfriend, ass-up, face planted in one half of the hardened mold with Vaseline lubricating the cement around him to keep the second half of the mold sticking once dry.
Finally, once both pieces cured, I pried them apart and washed them clean, and unwrapped and cleaned all the armatures. All the molds can be seen in the header picture of this post.
My next step, after re-teflon wrapping each armature, will be to finally do the foam latex! One of my old teachers has generously allowed me to do this intensive step at his house so I have a lesser chance of screwing up. Until next time!
Post 008 | Adam and Jeffrey Puppet Construction
Construction for Adam and Jeffrey (Boyfriend)’s armatures were significantly faster than for Lisa’s ball and socket. Wire armatures are quite flimsy and subject to breaking, but they actually take a few days or fewer to make, whereas a ball and socket took about a month and a half of work....
In any case, I’m two steps closer to the next step of puppet construction. These two armatures, along with Lisa’s ball-and-socket, will soon be sculpted over with a hard clay in order to make a mold, which will then be filled and cooked with a foam latex substance.
To add a bit of dynamism to my hastily made character designs, I have Adam as slightly shorter than Boyfriend but taller than Lisa. I think having a tall, caring Boyfriend will be somehow reassuring to viewers. I’m thinking of making him blonde, mostly for fun.
I soon need to add armatures for giant hands, stay tuned!
Post 007 | Armature Test 02
I tried to make the most of my rental of the Magic Arm camera stand and I did another dance with my puppet. The idea for this test was to do a more exaggerated fun dance, compared to the first test which is a smoother more subtle movement. Again, I am quite pleased with the result and have further confirmed that this armature will work fine for what I need to do for the film.
Post 006 | Armature Test 01
Under the instruction of my supervisor, I decided to test out my newly built ball-and-socket armature to see if it could suit all my needs or if I needed to create another puppet in wire to allow different movements.
A sequence in my film includes the protagonist’s mother dancing to a bossanova style song slowly and casually. For this film, I intend to use the same puppet for the protagonist character, Lisa, and her mother. This means that Lisa needs to be able to do basic things in the movie, but her armature also has to allow her to dance smoothly and subtly.
This animation test, I think, proves that the armature will do the job for what I need. I’m quite pleased with how the armature is able to move, though it is a bit difficult to pose because of unevenly distributed tightness along the joints (some very tight, some move with the slightest tap).
In conclusion, I think I’ll be able to use the same puppet for Lisa’s character as I will for Mom. Dieu merci what a time-saver!!
Post 005 | Storyboarding and Animatic
I must admit that I’ve always dreaded storyboarding for animated films. That was partially because I used to not own a Wacom Tablet, which therefore required me to redraw everything for each frame. But I’ve also truly relied on my sense of timing for the planning of a film, and I find it most efficient for me to work with a storyboard and animatic simultaneously.
An animatic is a simplification of a film (most often animated), with drawings or stills to represent all key movements and shots in a film, and then pieced together with a rough sound track to get a sense of what the final film will look like.
The standard method of compiling an animatic is to use an approved storyboard, plop the frames into an editing software like Premiere Pro, and work from there. My (perhaps unorthodox and inefficient) method is to create my storyboard as I go along.
In creating the first animatic for Mum’s Finger, I worked in Adobe Illustrator to create my frames. The picture above features all the Art Boards (24 to be exact) from Illustrator, with all the layers turned on and on one giant sheet to give a sense of my film. In the animatic, however, the frames are much neater, at a 16:9 aspect ratio. I work lazily when I can, copying and pasting elements from one shot to another, as Illustrator makes this so easy. All in all, however, my animatic includes 140 frames to make a 4 minute movie...... I think it is clear I might need to cut some things down. For now I’ll be showing the 4-minute animatic (compiled of the images pictured above) to my class to get some much needed feedback.

Post 004 | Armature
Although I’ve taken very little time to provide more exhaustive pre-production details, designs, and sketches, here is a post about the armature I’ve just completed for my protagonist, Lisa. I am still in the thick (or perhaps the beginning) of storyboarding and creating an animatic for the film, but with the urgency to begin the labour-intensive process of creating a custom ball-and-socket armature, I decided to begin puppet construction before I had even finalized character designs. This is not recommended! But I had no choice.
Anyway, this is the second ever ball-and-socket armature I’ve built, the first being for my previous film, Oh, Mr. President. Naturally, this process was much shorter the second time and slightly improved as well.

My previous armature, pictured above, we robust and well-built, but had the problem of too many joints. The elbows and knees both bent very weirdly, resulting in some very interesting animation (interesting being a euphemism for awkward). An example is here; watch how her arm moves:
To solve this problem, I decided to do some extra soldering. This new armature has about half as many ball parts. Instead, at the knees and elbow joints I have soldered a block to one of the sandwich plates, a rod into that, and a ball onto the rod. This results in one long piece where the barbell is the same part as the sandwich plate and only pivots at one end.
My initial plan was laid out on Adobe Illustrator to map out my measurements and number of pieces. Squares represent these soldered blocks attached to the sandwich plates.
After about a month and a half of work, I have my completed armature (pictured above). I have also provided the pleasure of seeing my injury from unsafe procedures as a lesson to all who plan on venturing into armature building. As I was holding a sandwich plate to a belt sander to made it perfect (see all the prefect rounded sandwich plates above, washed of blood), the plate got caught at the bottom platform and pulled my thumb in with brute force. As a result, a part of my thumb and nail was sanded off and I fainted in front of the metal shop guys, requiring the use of an Incident Report. Next time I will stay careful til the end!
