Could you give a breakdown on KW book's new announcement about fan merch please? And what happened that led to them making this announcement, bc I keep seeing talks abt hotels and I have no idea what's happening.. I need context
Hi,
For those who don't know, this is about KWBOOKS' third and final guideline about secondary creations (=fan creations).
The new guideline adds to the previous guidelines that 3D merch (examples given are dolls, doll clothes, figures, light sticks, badges, rings, weapons) can only be made personally, and will no longer be allowed to be sold at all. This applies to GDCG and DoD.
Why did they make such a specific guideline? I'll start from the beginning.
1st guideline
So back when GDCG first came out in Oct 2024, immediately it was obvious it would be a hit. It was by the author of the mega-hit DoD and the first 50 episodes that were released on the first day had already grabbed a ton of people.
Then, on twt, somebody started advertising for their Braun dolls.
I didn't see this first hand, but as far as I know, it quickly became apparent that this person was ready to make and sell a lot of Braun doll merch to fans, only days after the novel's launch. This made a lot of people frown, and it was widely suspected to be a for-profit business that was using a popular ip without permission rather than a fan making merch at small scale. Another issue was that the Braun doll was such an obvious merch item that the publisher itself would surely sell, so was it right for there to be 'fan-made' merch that could basically be confused for the official?
The Braun doll was eventually canceled due to the heavy backlash.
Soon afterwards, KWBOOKS announced their first guideline regarding fanwork.
In their first guideline, they forbid some things, including :
fanwork that may be misunderstood to be KWBOOKS's official product
for-profit sales of fan merch
reproducing (scan/tracing etc) official text, illustration or other visual content, or creating/distributing official text etc with no creativity added.
They also specified (in the twt) that
if fanmerch is made by a business, this would be considered ip infringement, no matter the scale
regarding mass production, both individuals & businesses must sign a contract with them before production.
After this guideline, fans basically unanimously agreed to not sell Good Friend dolls, even at a small scale, and only distributed patterns & sold DIYs.
2nd guideline
The second guideline came in May 2025.

The second guideline was mostly about not making merch that may be misunderstood to be official merch.
To be brief, the issue was that
there seemed to be for-profit large scale manufactures
people had (again) started making merch that could be misunderstood to be official merch
I personally was seeing a lot of merch that were like, for example, USBs with 'Disaster Management Bureau' simply printed on it. (No additional fan illustration or anything...) I feel that that's an example of using official text with no creativity added / making merch that may be misunderstood to be official merch.
Around this time KWBOOKS was also privately contacting several dollmakers and asking them to stop selling their GDCG dolls, bc it may be confused with official merch that was coming. We know this bc one of the contacted dollmakers posted the convo.
(personal thoughts : people were wondering about the doll designs potentially being similar to the dolls that KWBOOKS asked to be stopped. In retrospect I think it may have been just that they were 5cm dolls of the same characters. Based on their interview, I suspect KWBOOKS took care to make the official doll designs not similar to any of the preexisting fan doll designs.)
As we all know, official 5cm dolls were then sold, as were official Good Friend dolls. But then...
3rd guideline
The third guideline was announced Nov 2025.

According to the twt, KWBOOKS had been seeing a lot of cases that were going against the guideline. So as to not cause fatigue for the readers, instead of making additional announcements, they had been privately contacting the offending parties. However, some people just turned their accounts private and kept producing the problematic merch.
Due to the repeated incidents, they made a final guideline.
From after Nov 30th, 2025, all '3d merch' related to DoD and GDCG will be banned from being sold. (making for your personal use and/or distributing a small amount for free is okay.) This includes
character based 3d merch (ex. dolls, doll clothes, figures, light sticks)
related, clothing and other items (ex. badges, rings, weapons)
Why are people talking about some hotel?
This is bc people are discussing what might have been the final straw for KWBOOKS.
Recently there was a rather pricey fan event announced, themed after the Flower Golden Resort, where the staff would be cosplayers. It was to be sold with a one-night check-in to the hotel.
The sheer scale of the event, as well as them basically recreating Flower Golden Resort, caused many people to question whether it wasn't going way too far and infringing on the GDCG IP rather than being a small scale fan event. Even if they weren't doing this at a profit, the hotel would be seeing revenue of tens of millions of won based on the GDCG IP, all without the publisher or the author even being notified, so was that okay?
After a heavy backlash including input from other fandoms, the event was eventually canceled, on the same day that KWBOOKS put up the announcement. So that's why some people suspect the hotel was the last straw.
(Personally I think the hotel was unrelated to the announcement, bc surely KWBOOKS took some time to make their decision. I've been seeing several fanmade merch that worried me, such as :
griptok(popsocket) that looked exactly like the official griptok merch, only with the cross being red like in the official illustration
Bureau themed jacket that was basically a jacket with the words 'Supernatural Disaster Management Bureau' written on the back, as well as their official logo.
Both of the fanmerch were canceled after backlash, but I think any one of them may have been the last straw. There were probably a lot more that I didn't see. So who knows.)
I was going to make fanmerch, am I doomed?
To be clear, only the '3d' fanmerch specified above are banned.
This means that flat stuff like doujins, stickers, photo cards etc are all fine.
The common consensus is that stuff like acrylics and corottos are fine as well, since they're a) original illustrations, unlikely to be misunderstood to be official, and b) they're such popular items that KWBOOKS not mentioning them at all must be a statement in and of itself.
As for the explicitly forbidden stuff such as dolls, rings, weapons etc, you can still make them for yourself, or distribute them (small scale) for free. You just can't sell them. Some dollmakers have been distributing their doll designs so that people can make their own.

A Parallel Life / Awoken By A Lamp
throw away account cause this is really personal.
My last semester at a certain college I was assulted by a football player for walking where he was trying to drive (note he was 325lbs I was 120lbs), while unconscious on the ground I lived a different life.
I met a wonderful young lady, she made my heart skip and my face red, I pursued her for months and dispatched a few jerk boyfriends before I finally won her over, after two years we got married and almost immediately she bore me a daughter.
I had a great job and my wife didn't have to work outside of the house, when my daughter was two she [my wife] bore me a son. My son was the joy of my life, I would walk into his room every morning before I left for work and doted on him and my daughter.
One day while sitting on the couch I noticed that the perspective of the lamp was odd, like inverted. It was still in 3D but... just.. wrong. (It was a square lamp base, red with gold trim on 4 legs and a white square shade). I was transfixed, I couldn't look away from it. I stayed up all night staring at it, the next morning I didn't go to work, something was just not right about that lamp.
I stopped eating, I left the couch only to use the bathroom at first, soon I stopped that too as I wasn't eating or drinking. I stared at the fucking lamp for 3 days before my wife got really worried, she had someone come and try to talk to me, by this time my cognizance was breaking up and my wife was freaking out. She took the kids to her mother's house just before I had my epiphany.... the lamp is not real.... the house is not real, my wife, my kids... none of that is real... the last 10 years of my life are not fucking real!
The lamp started to grow wider and deeper, it was still inverted dimensions, it took up my entire perspective and all I could see was red, I heard voices, screams, all kinds of weird noises and I became aware of pain.... a fucking shit ton of pain... the first words I said were "I'm missing teeth" and opened my eyes. I was laying on my back on the sidewalk surrounded by people that I didn't know, lots were freaking out, I was completely confused.
At some point a cop scooped me up, dragged/walked me across the sidewalk and grass and threw me face down in the back of a cop car, I was still confused.
I was taken to the hospital by the cop (seems he didn't want to wait for the ambulance to arrive) and give CT scans and shit..
I went through about 3 years of horrid depression, I was grieving the loss of my wife and children and dealing with the knowledge that they never existed, I was scared that I was going insane as I would cry myself to sleep hoping I would see her in my dreams. I never have, but sometimes I see my son, usually just a glimpse out of my peripheral vision, he is perpetually 5 years old and I can never hear what he says.
EDIT (24 hours after post): never though anyone would read this, I changed a line so that it no longer seems that my 2 year old daughter bore a child.
I have never seen Inception or the Star Trek episode so many have mentioned (but I will eventually)
I will not do an AMA
I've had many PM's describing similar experiences and 3 posters stating such experiences are impossible, I'd say more research needs to be done on brain functions. Pre-med students, don't assume you know everything.
