i need everyone to understand that gerard’s $120-$180 pen is not actually bougie, as pens go. for a nice specialty pen that’s like, entry level. i have friends who are really into pens, one is a high school teacher and the other is a freelance comic artist (aka Not Wealthy) and they both own pens in that price range. i’m 100% sure miss professional comic artist with Netflix and MCR money who stops at specialty stationery stores in every city has pens at home with price tags that could pay several months of a normal person’s rent

$120 is not remotely entry level - at least in the US. An entry level is like a basic Lamy Safari or Kaweco Sport, you're looking at about $30USD each. I have two limited edition Sports, one in coral orange, and one in Iridescent Pearl plus a charcoal black Lamy Safari.

But it's absolutely true that $180 is not an exorbitant amount for a solidly made, built to last fountain pen. Even Gerard's Lamy 2000, which in 2025 retails for $400USD, is not unacceptably exorbitant for a functional everyday use pen that is meant to last literally for generations.

BOUGIE would be a Namiki Emperor Maki-e pen, which routinely retails for upwards of ten-thousand US dollars. Those are "grail" pens, which are the sort of thing that most hardcore fountain pens users spend a chunk of their life trying to be able to acquire.

My personal grail pen is the Namiki Shooting Star, a lacquered pen with an 18k gold nib that goes for $3000. Maybe someday!

I tend to hc that Gambit has occasionally been interested in the idea of men, but is so easily distracted by women that he just never got around to testing the waters, so while he might be receptive to the idea in theory, he has almost zero experience in practice. I have kind of a thing for the idea of someone like Magneto trying to challenge flirt with him and him just consistently interpreting it as this other dude hating his guts and asserting dominance (in the usual, guys butting heads way) because that's the only way he's been naturally socialized to see that. I did feel bad for him during this scene with the way he kind of does try to make a friendly overture here only to be snubbed. I love Magneto, but depending on who's writing him, he can be kind of a snob sometimes. It was genuinely awesome to see that at least one writer has portrayed him as being not only supportive of Rogue and Gambit's marriage, but also of the idea of Gambit as a dependable partner for Rogue.

So much of this really gels with my HC of Romyneto as a throuple.

My interpretation of the two is Magneto being too smug and dominant to come off as flirting to Gambit, and just seems condescending and combative at first. Gambit internalizing toxic masculinity (even if he tries to grow beyond it) means he just interprets things as power plays or a threat to his 'claim' of the woman they both love. Eventually Rogue has to put her foot down and say "y'all cut that shit out" because she's not a 'prize' to win.

Eventually Magneto and Gambit would have to come to a sort of middle ground where Magneto can be dominant in a more sensual, affectionate way that Gambit can come to understand. Likewise, Gambit would have to shed some of his I Must Be Strong, Powerful Man and learn to appreciate another man taking the lead and allow him to explore his sexuality.

I'm also of the mind that even as a polycule, over time, Magneto would push Gambit to stop making excuses and marry Rogue. It wouldn't mean that he loves either of them any less, but in his mind, traditional marriage and a wedding would be a young man's game and would want the two to be able to have that experience together.

Even in my AU - one that even includes a child of Rogue and Magneto - the three of them operate as an unconventional family but Rogue and Gambit are legally married. It just feels like the ideal for me.
