“THEY PRAY TO ME NOW, BUT THEY’D PILLAGE MY CORPSE AS SOON AS I DIED.” it was a good thing she was not dying anytime soon. sankta zisa of the dark woods, they called her. slayer of the devourer, sister of tyr, and wielder of joyeuse. ravkans evoked her holy name each time they ventured into the forest, as though she could save them from the malevolence of every old, festering growth that thrived there. zisa knew better than that, but she was not about to deprive the peasants of their superstitions when it was all they had.
she looked at the darkling before her, young in comparison to the ages she’s endured, and smiled. “do you think they are worth saving? do you think this world should endure as it is?”

headcanon 001: elaine tanaka
elaine was the default counselor of the akhlys cabin because she was the only demigod there. her mother was the protogenoi of misery and poison, one of the most ancient goddesses to ever exist, older than even the titans and born of chaos and night. akhlys did not consort with humans on the regular, but the few who remain devoted to her, she has manifested to a couple of times. one of these humans would be elaine’s dad, akira, a mythology professor at waseda university in shinjuku city, tokyo, japan. he worshipped akhlys and had been fascinated with her since he was a teenager, and in her honor he kept a garden of poisonous flora.
in a world that had almost forgotten her divine existence, akhlys was honored by akira’s continued veneration, and so she had turned him from her follower into her lover. it was a short and miserable affair, which ended shortly after akhlys gave birth to elaine. akira had tried to make akhlys happy, but she was anguish personified and she could not fully escape what was a facet of her divine nature. it was one of the reasons why the goddess did not get too close to mortals: they tried to turn her into something far more digestible. they did not or could not accept the reality of her essence.
after elaine was born, akhlys left akira to return to tartarus. once in a while, she would check in on her daughter, and when elaine was old enough to attract monsters, akhlys was there to help her get safely to camp halfblood. she was eight years old when she arrived, and for the longest time, she remained with the hermes cabin because there was no cabin erected in her mother’s name. this bred elaine’s resentment towards the camp’s partiality to the twelve olympians and their children, though she fought for them during the second titanomachy.
when gaea stirred from her sleep during the second giant war, elaine was visited by her mother in a dream and was forbidden to return to camp. she refrained from doing so for a while, but returned eventually to help build argo II, on the insistence of her friends. akhlys, who supported gaea, expressed her disappointment in the form of various dreams, but elaine had made up her mind and would not be swayed from her decision.
“Can someone knock me out, though? Anyone? I think that’d hurt less than…this.” Because, as always, she wants what she can’t have - for her family and her friends to be around - and it sucks and she hates herself for it, for inconveniencing others, and she loathes not being able to make a damn choice and get all of this over with. “So please, go for it. By any means. I just—I want to not feel anything for a bit.” It’s pathetic! She is being pathetic!
“AND BREAK MY KNUCKLES IN THE PROCESS?” elaine scoffed daintily and turned a page of her book. “i think not, lou.” she tried to continue reading but her concentration had now been broken by lou ellen’s monologue, and it was hard to think of anything else but the sadness that saturated every syllable of her words. elaine set her book down and looked at her fellow counselor in the eye, mulling over the options she could give her. “i could knock you out another way,” she suggested mildly. a daughter of akhlys, elaine was well-versed in the many ways one could be knocked out without the use of brute force ; some methods were permanent, others temporary. some hurt, others were as gradual as nodding off to sleep. still, it felt a little strange to offer her own concoctions to a friend, and a child of hecate at that. “or we can talk,” she shrugged. “i’ll even let you cry on my shoulders, if you want.”

It had been a long time since Callum had belonged to the Unseelie court, having left it when the queen’s interest in him had grown far too grand to ignore, or to deny. Leaving had been the only option, for it meant Mab no longer ruled over him, and he did not have to bend to her will. “ The only benefit to the courts these days is that one is never alone - it is good of you to stay far from their reaches. Fae children play by few rules. ” They were to be taught the ways of the fae - the few they did not inherit at birth. Despite the prospect of the situation, the gancanagh cracked a smile at Enzo’s words. “ Indeed. ” Reaching down, then, the fae took the child in his arms, and watched as small face pursed and then relaxed at the movement. “ Let’s hope this one is better behaved than most. ”
“AND IF SHE ISN’T?” what were they going to do then? “this sounds like a huge problem, and we might get into more trouble if this one ended up being a pain in the ass.” children who played by a few rules seemed like a nightmare to enzo, and even now he could hear his nanay in his mind, yapping away about discipline with reckless abandon. still, he already offered to let the changeling stay in his place and callum had already picked it up. “what does she even eat?” he asked as he grabbed hold of callum’s arm, readying to teleport. “answer me when we’re home. you don’t want to have your mouth open for this.” and without further warning, he took them, speeding through the gaps between time and space, and into his forest home in queensland. dead leaves rustled faintly upon their feet at the disturbance of their arrival, but the woods were quite otherwise. quiet and waiting. enzo turned to callum with his brows furrowed. “should we do some grocery shopping?”

“ But we did find her. You know how tricky changelings are. She would never thrive in an orphanage. ” He paused as the sleeping babe seemed to stir in her sleep, only loosening a breath when the child seemed to continue her snooze after several long moments. “ And it isn’t as if we can just return her to her sire. ” He wasn’t even sure which court she would have belonged to. After all, horns and bark-like skin were awfully common among the Fair Folk. Fae children who were left in the human world tended to have to fend for themselves - and, if their true nature was discovered, it usually meant they wouldn’t live very long. “ No, ” he admitted, crossing his arms. “ But I’ve seen unseelie younglings when I still roamed that court, and I firmly believe human children are nothing in comparison to them. ” Hungry, wrathful creatures with absolutely NO sense of remorse. While dark fae - such as himself - usually leaned heavily upon the more sinister side of things, unseelie children were of a wholly different level.
NOT OUR PROBLEM, he wanted to say, but it’s beginning to look more and more like their problem by the second. being a wild fae meant he wasn’t necessarily aware of the distinctions between his courtly brethren, of which callum seemed incredibly well-versed. enzo sighed. “i only have the vaguest of ideas, you know. i tend to stay away from the courts, and i only ever saw a changeling once or twice before.” and not enough to know exactly how they’re like. he was a solitary creature, as all tikbalangs usually were, with the exception of the engkantos he used to play with back in the philippines when he was younger, and callum now too, he supposed. “well then, we’re all the more doomed, aren’t we?” enzo’s smile was resigned. “we should get her back to my place. at least she’ll have all the space she could ever want to run amok away from intrusive mortals.”

Hands perched on his hips, the frown on the fae’s face seemed to be nearly permanent at this point - not having left Callum’s face since the moment they’d found the lost little changeling. “ An orphanage? ” He seemed horrified at the suggestion - eyes were wide as the gancanagh turned to cast a disbelieving look at the other. “ We most definitely won’t leave her at an orphanage. More trouble than it’s worth - and we’ll have the courts on our arses in no time. I think not. We’ll… ” Pursing fine lips then, his frown grew impossibly deeper. “ We’ll keep her here, for now, I suppose would be the best course of action. ” Tone giving away just how dubious he thought the whole deal was.
THE WAY CALLUM LOOKED SO SCANDALIZED would have one think enzo suggested the changeling be brought to a butcher instead. he raised a curious eyebrow, bit his lip in thought and crossed his arms over his chest. “had we not found her, that’s where she’ll end up — best case scenario.” it’s either the orphanage, the foster care system, the streets, or dead. the courts should be thanking them for even considering the changeling’s well-being. enzo shook his head and turned his hard gaze from the fae child to callum, eyebrow still raised. “have you ever taken care of a child before?” he remembered her sister, rafaella, and how she never stopped crying. “if she’s in any way similar to human baby, we’re both doomed.”
