Martyrdom isn’t really a concept in Judaism.

There have been Jewish martyrs (see Rabbi Akiva and the Maccabees) but not insofar as actively seeking martyrdom because of the whole pikuach nefesh thing (the preservation of life overrides almost all other Jewish law). Going back to Rabbi Akiva, for example, he ran and hid from the Romans rather than be killed for the Roman crime of teaching Torah in public.

But Jesus was definitely not one of them and it’s really weird (at the very least) for @mithingthepoint to call him a “Jewish martyr.”

That’s not what I said. I said he wasn’t a Jewish martyr. And he definitely wasn’t.

No matter what you believe about Jesus, historical or religious, he didn’t die as a Kiddush HaShem or sanctification of the name of G-D, specifically through a public dedication to Jewish ritual practice and Jewish identity. In other words, it’s the decision over to obey laws criminalizing Jewish ritual observance or Jewish identity or be punished/killed. Jesus was not put to death because of that, he put to death by the Romans due to the political reality of the time. The allegation was that Jesus claimed he was King of the Jews and that was a political threat to the Roman occupiers of 1st Century Judea, so the Roman State executed him (a reminder that crucifixion was the execution method the Romans used for political criminals). And if someone’s a Christian literalist and decides that history isn’t for them, he still wouldn’t be a Jewish martyr because, again, nowhere in the Christian Bible does it say that Jesus was deciding over whether to be punished/killed or to observe Jewish law.

Whether Jesus was a martyr within Christianity? I don’t know, nor is it really my place as a Jewish woman to determine that.

Jesus would count as a martyr in the Christian sense of the term since in Christianity, a martyr is someone who dies for a cause. Fighting against the Pax Romana/the Roman occupation of Judea would certainly count. However, mithingthepoint suggested that Jesus was not only a Jewish martyr but the last Jewish martyr which is totally and completely wrong since literally thousands of Jewish people were killed fighting the Romans in the century that followed his death. It’s also more than a little fucked up considering millions of Jewish people have been murdered by his followers who have regularly denied the fact that he even was Jewish to begin with.
