New goodies in my shop for tabletop nerds 💖
Hey all - please vote for my design in the “Botany” challenge on Threadless. It takes 10 seconds to give it a score and it would really help me out. Thanks!
She Fights Monstera on Threadless
When the players arrive, apologize and say you’ve changed the game last minute. Instead of roleplaying mighty wizards or space explorers, we’re all pretending to be people who love and care about the GM. Then sob uncontrollably for the rest of the evening.
A repost of my Chinese weapons table from the Chinese new year
I see a number of redundant entries. There’s also an eastern weapons conversion in the DMG.
Although you are right in both accounts, I choose to include a great number of options and diversity over redundancy. though i choose to give the Changdao and the Fangtian Ji identical stats, there is a difference between a long-saber traditionally used against cavalry and a two crescent bladed spear. this is also why i included different polearm weapons
As for the second, most of the conversion weapons in the DMG only specify “monk” weapons, these are almost exclusively Chinese equivalents

Not the final form, but a map I’m pleased with. A musical instrument repair shop.

The road ahead is bound by snow, a winter flurry that has left it all but impassable. The inn bustles with merchants and travelers forced to take a well-deserved break from the elements, and weather the storm indoors, yet while the time is lost, much more is gained in camaraderie, drink, food, and gifts that have mysteriously appeared beneath the non-denominational Candlenights tree at the center of the inn. Gifts for worshippers of all faiths, and those with no faith at all, regulars, and some still awaiting lodgers that have not yet arrived. Such is the serendipitous nature of the holiday, celebrated at different times by different people in different ways. Is it a jovial ruse by a crafty Innkeep, or are they indeed given by the names on the tags? The Star King, and Terry the Non-Denominational Gift Delivery Dragon.
None can be certain, but each recipient always finds a fitting gift awaits, just what they needed, whether they realized it or not.
Hey guys, I decided to create an interior for the Roadside Rest Inn from earlier this month, inspired by the holiday season. In my game, we celebrate Candlenights of My Brother My Brother and Me and The Adventure Zone fame, and I wanted to create a place for our DnD characters to celebrate the holiday spirit in a map that could be slipped into any game for a welcome change of pace. After all, adventurers rarely get a decent break, so why not have one forced upon them by fate.
I hope you all enjoy. Happy Holidays,
Ryan
Any advice for a brand-new DM with a group of brand-new players? This is literally all of our 1st or 2nd times playing except maybe one or two of us, and I found a really cool campaign that I think I can handle, but I was just wondering if there’s anything that you wouldn’t normally think of when you think of DMing that I should watch for. Thanks!
hmmmmm! that’s a good question. if i were you, i’d watch out for…
- PCs working against each other instead of with each other. d&d isn’t a video game or a competitive tabletop RPG, it’s a collaborative storytelling game.
- players being inattentive/not taking notes when things are important. reminding your players when might be a good time to jot some things down can never hurt
- learning how to read the room – noticing when players look confused, look like they want to interject your description with an action, when players are the most engaged
- give a chance for each player to shine during each session. d&d is a group game, so i try to divide the action accordingly, and not have one player hog the spotlight while the rest are relegated to getting their words in edgewise
- players saying “i do this and this and this!” without waiting for you to call for rolls. this will probably happen a decent amount of times. it takes some practice getting into the rhythm of DM describing, players reacting, DM describing, players reacting, etc.
- encouraging your players to take charge of their own character sheets. if it’s everyone’s first time playing, it’s totally fine and normal to have to pause and read over the rules, or look up a spell effect, etc. but after session 3-5 your players should really be getting a handle on how to play their character and shouldn’t be asking you what THEY can do on their turn and subsequently slowing down the game.
- using strong and diverse verbs (keeping a verb sheet next to you if necessary). i think my strongest trait as a DM is how descriptive i am; i try to engage all 5 senses when i describe an encounter, and i always ask my players how they attack a creature, and what their spell effects look like. my players have learned not to say, “uuh, i don’t care how my attack hits; you decide” because i’ll go, “okay! orwan, the orb of pulsating shadow explodes from your palm, cracking against the side of the guard’s jaw — and breaking it, sending teeth scattering. he screams in pain.” i’ve found that being as specific and visual as possible really engages the players lol, and makes them sit up straighter in their seats
what do other folks think?
