Whats amazing about animes like banana fish and no.6 is that while the main characters are gay, love isn’t the objective(like in most anime featuring lgbt characters). It’s the driving point - their actions are for the sake of the one they love, not for the sake of getting together with them. It’s the fact that they prioritise the safety of the other even though they can’t help but wish to be by their side.
