For a moment they were so excited that they forgot to actually accept the flowers from him, entranced as they were by the colorful petals. They gazed up at him, dark eyes wide and shining with pure delight.  “Thank you, Your Majesty!”

Remembering themself then, the undine accepted the pot carefully, though they did not yet bury their face among the blossoms - if this was meant to be a research subject, best be certain first that the flowers contain no toxins. “I’m not familiar with this species,” they said, glancing at him inquisitively in hope that he might give them more information. “Are they something you would like me to study?”

“y-yes, of course!” zarkon did not sputter, of course --- emperors did not sputter --- but it was a very close one.

what zarkon neglected to say, the flowers were important to the yarran galra because it was part of their extremely intricate courting ritual that no one outside yarra would bother to learn.

and if someone pointed it out to his small scientist? zarkon could easily claim ignorance.

it was hard being an emperor, you know, having to remember every single cultural detail from all over planet daibazaal.
