Today, we celebrate 84 years of the F4U #Corsair taking its #FirstFlight.
A total of 12,571 Corsairs were built across 16 different models, starting with the prototype delivered to the #USN in 1940 and concluding with the final delivery to the French in 1953.

March 19th 1945. The light cruiser USS Santa Fe pulls alongside the crippled American carrier USS Franklin, after a Japanese twin engine bomber struck her with two 550 pound armor piercing bombs. After losing 800 crew members she limped back to the U.S. for repairs, missing the remainder of the war and was later decommissioned in 1947.
