The Crown
The monarchist criticism of the crown cracks me up. Like yeah its all drama and its mostly fiction but it doesnât portray the family that negatively. Like this season especially. We were all prepared for Charles to be this villain, but heâs portrayed so sympathetically , even with tampon-gate. I would like to say that the issues between Charles and Diana are far more complicated than what is portrayed in the media and what we know now like 30+ years later is obviously what has been released by the firm. Charles absolutely did Diana dirty, but she was no saint either. Honestly the one I feel the most sympathy for is Camilla for being caught up in this, she and Charles should have just been allowed to marry in the first place. ANYWAY this season really pulls the punches that could have been thrown and I think that is a conscious choice in both writing and casting. I remember when season 4 ended we were prepared for a messy, drama filled and nasty divorce centered season and we got maybe some of that? Like donât get me wrong the drama is there, the cinematography and acting are all there, but this isnât a scathing indictment of the royal family that monarchists and sympathizers are bemoaning. King Charles was going to face criticism no matter what, Diana won the media over the second she stepped into their sphere. Even the episodes based on and around the Bashir interview and the divorce are sympathetic to the family, they show Charlesâ turmoil and Dianaâs anger as well as the Queen being above reproach and being done with the both of them as both sovereign and mother. Basically this is just my long drawn out way of saying chill out, The Crown is at best an expensive and beautiful fluff piece for the Royal Family. This isnât a bad thing, but I think it is a bigger asset to the firm than a detriment. Slight criticism will not set Buckingham palace on fire yâallÂ
In the 1930s, Li Shiu Tong's boyfriend, Magnus Hirschfeld, was a prominent defender of gay people. But Li's own research has long been overlooked
Historians are rediscovering one of the most important LGBTQ activists of the early 20th centuryâan Asian Canadian named Li Shiu Tong. You probably donât know the name, but he was at the center of the first wave of gay politics.
Much has been written about Liâs older boyfriend, Magnus Hirschfeld. He was a closeted German doctor and sexologist who became famous in the 1930s as a defender of gay people. In books on Hirschfeld, Li is usually just a footnote.
âŚ.
In his manuscript, Li tells how after Hirschfeld died, he spent decades traveling the world, carrying on the research and taking detailed notes while living in Zurich, Hong Kong and then Vancouver.

Life Update
Still havenât finished my MA program, but hopefully thatâll be this year...
I started my internship today. I am essentially a research assistant to the museum director while we work on videos explaining covid and safety procedures to high schoolers and middle schoolers. I am also the resident youth on the project so my input is pretty valuable to the production. Itâs not a fulltime job, but it is a paid position so I canât complain too muchÂ
Controversial Take
Red states deserve federal relief and sympathy during natural disasters too. They donât âdeserve this for being redâ like grow up people are dyingÂ
Bringing this back because most my of my home state is still devastated by Ida. Please consider donation to bayou relief charities because that seems to be the only attention the bayou and river parishes are getting.
yâall pray for Louisiana, or at least keep us in your thoughts. My parents chose to ride out the storm back home and I have been a nervous wreck for two days. Ida has not even passes yet and the damage is awful. This is always a tough weekend for those of us who witnessed Katrina and now the pain is just going to be amplified. If you know someone from New Orleans, just give them a hug. We all need itÂ
So I actually got to read for fun, for once, and I read Casey McQuistonâs One Last Stop and I loved it. RWRB is also one of my favorites so I was already excited to read this one, especially since it was about a wlw couple. It is definitely more adult themed than RWRB, but I really liked that. Iâm not going to spoil any thing, but there is discussion of the Upstairs Lounge fire in New Orleans in â73 and it is an event that deserves far more attention than it gets. Like me, McQuiston is a South Louisiana native who no doubt also saw the brief news stories on the anniversary of the fire. I encourage anyone reading this to learn more about it and the complete failings of city government and law enforcement to do anything about it. We donât even know the names of all the victims and the public did not want to know. I love my hometown and now in 2021 it is one of the more progressive southern cities when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, but this is a dark stain that we often forget. Just, from one Louisiana queer to another, thank you Casey for bringing this event to your readerâs consciousness.
PS the details of the fire may be triggering to some, so please research at your own cautionÂ

Apparently people are pressed the the wonderful Jodie Turner-Smith is playing Anne Boleyn in an upcoming period drama. Like get over it. Its a fictional show and we all know what Anne Boleyn looked like. No one is going to watch the show and suddenly be convinced that she wasnât white. Diverse casting means DIVERSE casting. Like yes we should totally have more shows about non white people and figures, but Anne has been played a hundred times over so this is just a new person in the role.
