History Major Problems

do you have any tips on writing large papers that you just cant get right??? im having trouble getting things into words and saying what i want :/

1. WRITING LABS! Most if not all universities should have some kind of writing center where you can go and get your paper looked at.  Usually it’s third or fourth year students they get to work there, and usually (at least where I went) they try to have students from a wide variety of majors. So if you go in with a history paper there usually will be someone from that major who can help. 

2. talk to text or voice typing. Any feature on the program you use that does this is super helpful. Whenever I’m working on a paper I use it on google docs to take notes down and gather ideas as I’m going through sources and then go back through it all and use that to help form the paper. Try it and then look at what you’ve just said when it’s typed out and see what looks good and what doesn’t flow well and tweak it from there.  I don’t recommend this for everything, but it is a good tool if you get really stuck and just don’t know how to get your thoughts into words so it makes sense on paper. 

Writing just like any skill takes practice, you can only get better with time.

I´m graduating in a year and a half and I still don´t know what I want to do, but I´m thinking about studying History, but I don´t know what jobs I´d be able to get with a History Major... so out of curiosity what are you doing after you finish studying and are there other jobs one can get with a History Major?

There are loads of jobs in many fields available. Obviously the most common one that is talked about is teaching but historians are welcomed in many other fields, mostly due to the fact that we tend to have very good research skills. Museum and archival work are personally my favorites. Heres an old ask where I go a bit more in depth (x)

For myself, I actually decided last minute before graduation that I wanted to put grad school on hold for a bit. I’m only planning to take a year or two before going somewhere, mostly so I can work and build up my finances and gain some experience through volunteer work and internships, and I honestly just want a break. I’m going to go to graduate school to get my masters in Public History since I want to go into a curatorial position or even the education department of a museum. I really enjoy presenting history to people, but not in the way teachers do with slideshows in a class room. I like pulling out artifacts or walking through historical places and really showing people what it was all about. (I may or may not be that person who pulls out a WWII rifle to show off at parties)(yes I actually have one). 

Talk to a school counselor for some advice though, they usually have some material they can give you that’ll have you figure out what to do. And even if you go in as a history major or anything else, it is okay to change. I started out as a psychology major and switched to history right before my second year.

For the person wanting to do European hist bc Ireland, just a warning as a secondary school student in the country. Its fairly boring once you get into the 20th century and b4 then its failed revolutions. Its depressing really. Each to their own tho.

Doesn’t hurt to try though, and if you do find it extremely boring then at least you’ll know what you’re not interested in if you continue to pursue history

im going into high school next year and im taking ap nsl and i dont know if thats a good idea? would you recommend taking an ap class in freshmen year of high school? thank you so much xx

It all depends on you as a student. I had a few friends who did take one their freshman year and they didn’t seem to have any problems. If you have a good teacher and you dedicate yourself to doing well in it then you should be fine!

Next year will be the first year my school will have AP Euro history and I'm so excited I get to have the chance to take it!

Thats great!! I never got to take AP Euro but my friends who did all said they enjoyed it!

Hey I saw the ask from the person looking for info about preservation classes. I know at my university there is an entire historic preservation department for those wishing to major in that area. HP programs are kind of rare but schools that have them are great for training in areas such as museum studies, archives, historic sites, and the like. Your blog could be a great way to spread the word about this growing field for those who want to work in history but aren't interested in teaching!

I wish I knew what university that was! I have another post where I went through a list of other jobs open to those who want to work in history (x). I’m just afraid my information is still somewhat limited as I’m just now starting to enter the world of grad schools and “how do you plan get this job you want?”.
