#123.5 - When a wild Scyther begins to eat a steel-rich diet, it can trigger the evolution into the fierce bug and steel-type Pokemon, Scizor. When this happens, the ingested metal is absorbed and considerably hardens Scyther’s outer exoskeleton. The Pokemon quickly become too heavy to fly, and will instead use their wings to better regulate their body temperature. The sharp, scythe-like blades that became this Pokemon’ namesake also go through a dramatic change once metal enters their diet, and will morph into powerful pincers; though they won’t develop Scizor’s famous eye-like pattern until the evolution is nearly complete.

          ❛❛ IT’S BEEN AWHILE for me, too, ❜❜ Morty replies, lifting the newly cut lid from his pumpkin and setting it aside.

          ❛❛ After we’re done carving, we could roast some if you’d like. ❜❜  He proceeds to dive right in to remove the pumpkin’s slimy insides, plopping handfuls of the stringy orange stuff—and the seeds!—onto some paper scattered around them.

“Sure! I could run out and get us some cider, too!”

How long since he had felt such excitement for something as simple as sitting around a fire? Maybe he needed to get out more. Maybe he just felt calmer around Morty, happier, even. He had such a soothing presence, no wonder everyone loved spending time with him. Looking back, Bugsy had... looked up to him, and not just literally, able to balance his opposing duties well, along with his social life, a skill the bug researcher still struggled with.

          ❛❛ GOOD THINKING, ❜❜ Morty agrees, standing to browse the selection of pumpkins they’d picked out earlier in the day. He envisions the Fog Badge on one of them and decides it’s the perfect choice, then reclaims his seat.

          As he begins to carve around the stem to begin the pumpkin gutting process, he remembers something he hadn’t done in a few Halloweens now.  ❛❛ Ever had roasted pumpkin seeds, Bugsy…? ❜❜

“Not since I was a kid! The last time was when my parents took us up to the Lake of Rage on a camping trip around this time of year.”

He seems to be in a much better mood thanks to the compliment on his idea for his pumpkin, now humming as he perfected the shape of the badge. 

“Why d’you ask?”

          THAT’S ENOUGH, he supposes. Morty doesn’t have to be a psychic to be able to sense the need for a change of subject here…

                    He’s finished carving his own pumpkin by now—a very cliche and expertly practiced face of a Gengar which he does every year. Eying Bugsy’s progress then, he lets out a small gasp.

          ❛❛ Your Gym’s badge… That’s a good idea… I may have to grab another pumpkin. ❜❜

Okay, not to brag or anything, but he thought it was a pretty good idea. And hey, he’s no pumpkin artist, his circles don’t have to be perfect.

“I just thought, y’know, it’s been a long time since us gym leaders hung out. It’d be a good way to commemorate it!”

          ❛❛ IT’S OKAY to be scared if you are, though. I wouldn’t judge. ❜❜  He also never argued with people about their own emotions even when he knew otherwise. That would be rude and intrusive. Still, he wanted to ensure his friend it was alright.  ❛❛ To my knowledge those things aren’t real, but one thing Ghost Pokemon have taught me is that nothing is as it seems… ❜❜

Bugsy grumbles something about werehounds and well-dwellers as he goes back to his pumpkin. Poor kid was trying (and failing) to carve it into his Gym’s badge, though he was having trouble with the Ledyba spots.
