a couple months ago i met up with this girl for a coffee, and things were going okay until i made a brief allusion to how unstable the sociopolitical landscape feels right now, and she did a double take and said that maybe if i read the news less i'd be doing much better. which immediately clued me in that we would never be friends. because i'm an immigrant working at an institution directly opposed to the regime and not paying attention is a luxury i cannot participate in, as well as a complete concession to a government that wants to keep you ignorant. anyway i haven't seen this girl since but i did stop reading the news to give my brain a break when i left the country to go home over the holidays and i do feel better.
