You know that post I made about telling people not to run over wildlife and joking about people getting mad at me? That is not an exaggeration. Based on a real experience. I used to live next to a lake with a large reptile population and one spring I made a post in the community Facebook page about what types of turtles are native to that area in North Carolina, which ones are endangered/rare, which ones are likely to musk/bite you, telling people to check their boat lifts before docking their boats because aquatic turtles like to sun themselves on structures like that, what to do if you find a turtle nest, how to make a turtle dock so turtles don’t sun themselves on your dock. Helpful turtle primer for those who were curious because we did make little wildlife spotting/identification request posts on the page.

The women replying to the post were like “Wow! They’re so cute! I didn’t know we had so many turtles around here!” “This information is so useful, I can’t wait to tell my kids these fun facts!” and the piece of shit redneck dudes were irate at the post for some reason, they were like “I HATE those motherfuckers! I kill them on purpose! They ruin my fucking lawn! I run over them on purpose. Fuck these turtles. Fuck you bleeding heart hippie fuck.” and it was such a bizarre surreal experience. I was not condescending in the post in the slightest, I was just giving advice on how to help wildlife for people who may be interested. Just an informative post about turtles. And it made them really mad?

I could see having beef with the cottonmouths or the Canada geese (both native species that have important ecological roles but often negative interactions with humans and can make your lake retreat unpleasant) but how could you have a problem with them?

The fuck could these guys have done to you? All they want to do is chill and sun themselves, like you? They add to the relaxing atmosphere, they’re quiet, they’re cute and they aren’t venomous.

No but also that. They’d rather let their dog kill a laying turtle, smash the nest and eat all the babies than do the bare minimum to protect turtle hatching sites. Not leashing their fucking dogs or putting up a small barrier or anything. When they say “these turtles ruin my lawn” they are usually talking about turtles nesting there. If a wild animal inconveniences them in the slightest, they think it deserves to die. The turtles were there first, they’re on their territory, they’re cute, they usually don’t bother anyone and they benefit humans by eating algae and insects. But these people will scream until they’re blue in the face if you gently suggest they put in the slightest effort to avoid hurting the native wildlife.

This x100 with local snakes. Especially harmless and/or helpful ones like rat snakes and corn snakes. Seeing them dead on the road breaks my heart. Like most of the time someone might stop to help a turtle- or at least avoid them. They *definitely* hit snakes on purpose. (I know there are some hateful freaks out there who just don't care and will hit and kill anything, and both make me so sad regardless- I just see it more with snakes personally.)

this is a juvenile colossal squid!! it's transparent to camouflage in the shallower waters where it lives at this stage of its life. it'll head deeper and turn redder the older it gets- red light is the wavelength least able to penetrate water, so the deeper you go the quicker the red filters out. red or black marine life is hardest to see down there because there's no red light to reflect off the animal, it'll just be dark! stealthy abyssal terror in the making <3

the second screenshot is looking up the same exact thing, but with a (australian) vpn on. canadian vpn didn't fix it fyi.

So it's really just the phrase "rigged election" - if you search that alongside any other words it'll give the same response, not just Trump. But it's still good to look out for these things, just no need to get hyperbolic just yet.
