Making up answers for plot holes in Barbie: in a Fairy Secret
ok before I even start. yes, I know that this is not at all canon, I don't think the writers were secretly planning this in the background the whole time. I just wanna make up answers for a silly kids movie. thank you.
ok, maybe not plot holes per se but some really weird rules that affect the fairy world plus strange world building.
so the movie establishes these rules and ideas pretty early on
there are portals to the dairy world all over, whether through hidden public entrances or privately owned ones
the fairy world is known as Gloss Angeles and is based off of los Angeles and other human culture (mainly American)
there are fairies living all over earth who use these portals and pose as other humans
humans can come to the fairy world and don't need to hide there, but if they marry a fairy they aren't allowed to leave.
there are magic safeguards in place so that if humans return to earth they cannot expose Gloss Angeles existence
Gloss Angeles is really small. just looking at it when the characters are exploring, it's incredibly small
So what do all these pieces mean? let me explain.
the human and fairy worlds used to be mostly separate, with naturally occuring portals forming occasionally, allowing the worlds to know about each other but not have much contact. eventually, people began crossing these borders more and more often and exchanging culture.
one day, a sickness begins spreading across the fairy world (similar to covid or the black plague) and becomes deadly very fast. however, the fairies soon realize that the humans are immune. this leads to a mass exodus of fairies from the fairy world. they spread across the human realm and refrain from contacting each other in fear of the plague. the fairies that remain in their own realm are soon thinned out due to the disease.
eventually, the disease dies down / the fairies find a way to control it for the most part, but still fear it. the current monarch fears losing their power due to a diminished population and comes up with a plan.
the current generation of fairies fears this plague and wants to stay in the human realm for their safety. so the monarch starts a propaganda campaign to improve the image of the fairy kingdom. they do a massive overhaul in infrastructure to redesign the realm to appeal to the human influenced fairies, even renaming the realm Gloss Angeles. They implement more portals to the human realm.
somewhere in this process, they also realize that human-fairy children are both biologically immune to the disease but have fairy traits of magic (or perhaps no magic/wings. but it's obvious that adaptive devices like stick on wings are readily available for those who need them from the store scene in the movie). the ruler now desperately wants to encourage human-fairy relations to help create an immunized population so they no longer have to fear the plague.
the humans really don't like this, so the magical memory safe guards are put in place, and any human that can stomach the rules are no longer allowed to leave via the marriage rule to prevent letting the secret out.
the movie takes place maybe one or two generations after this plague. the world is still very human inspired and the population still much decreased from its former numbers, the people still recovering from the trauma of the plague, but progress is being made. they're still not ready to let go of their rules, but probably will within the next few decades.
