Location Location Location
When starting an exhibition the location is just as important as the images used as it can compliment or contrast the work and enhance the feelings in the images.
Tate Modern- Large space with white walls in a square. Simple and easy to see the work and flow around the space and images, good for story telling. Museum like layout with most of the work.
Victoria Miro- Large white walls with some floors with lots of natural lighting and other floors having white artificial lighting.
Streetlevel Photoworks- White walls with lots of natural lighting, lots of thing and people to interact with, centrally located in the middle of Glasgow, free entry- more people might want to go for this.
Just like Simon Murphy when you have no exhibition space, how do you make it work? You could do what Simon done and use window spaces for example his Govanhill project meant he could use local shop windows to display his work creating an interactive exhibition.
Another idea is displaying work in a local cafe or other type of small business in your local area, as both parties will be promoting your work and the company that is showing the work as this will make people use the facilities while looking at your work for example buying a coffee or cake or whatever the business is selling.
When creating the exhibition you start to think about the work you are going to present but there is more to it than what looks pleasing to the eye, you need to think about what catches the eye, what you create what you want to be associated with (style of photography), think about the skills that are being shown in the images and what this will make people think of you and the level of skill. Think about the gallery space and how people will be able to walk around and where the images will be and if they will tell an effective story. Something that is overlooked is the transport to the space and making sure the images are safe and protected when in transport.
Making sure the work you are putting into your exhibition is complementing what you want to keep creating, people will see the work and start following you for the same type of content. Making sure the work shows all the skills that you can use and showing the level of work you consistently create.
Creating a mailing list to invite people and keeping them up to date with whats happening. Releasing sneak peaks into whats going on behind the scenes ad sneak peaks of what will be on display, make it interesting and make a fuss, get other people involved into the making of the event and the more people promoting the better the turnout will be.
