It wasn’t often that Padmé left the Theed Palace, but she’d been able to convince Captain Panaka to allow her to walk the streets of Theed with a few guards and her handmaidens for protection.

Sabé was right behind Padmé when she heard a familiar voice call out no to Queen Amidala like the other voices, but to her, using her old name. Freezing when she spotted her mother in the crowd, Sabé placed her hand on Padmé’s shoulder to stop her.

“We should head back, Your Highness.”

Padmé gently came to a stop, waving at her people. Casually, with her polite smile on her face, she scanned the crowd for a potential threat, but came up empty.

Keeping her voice low, she tilted her head slightly towards Sabé, inclining her chin. “Is there cause for danger?”

“Not danger, Your Highness just-” again her mother called out her birth name. And Sabé flinched.

“-My mother.” Sabé did not want to even acknowledge her mother, she wanted to turn around and flee to the safety of Theed Palace.

Padmé’s brow furrowed. “Pull your hood down and form into a group. We will not tolerate her making you uncomfortable.”

She straightened and started to move along, hoping that the woman would give up.

Sabé knew she’d pay for this later, but did as her queen instructed. But anyone who knew Asha Corr knew she was not one to give up so easily. She followed the procession until the very end. Before the woman was brave enough to finally approach, for once Sabé was glad for the guards Panaka had insisted they bring out with them.

“Let me past, I want to see my daughter!” Sabé wished the ground would open up and swallow her whole.

“Tsabin, tell them to let me pass!” She could feel everyone’s eyes on her, and Sabé shifted uncomfortably.

“My name is Sabé.” The handmaiden muttered, still waiting for that hole to open up beneath her feet.

Mara felt tears form in her eyes. “I don’t care if it was just you. Yes Sabé!” She pulled the woman into a hug as tears fell down her cheeks. “You don’t know how much this means to me.”

Returning the hug, Sabé smiled, true she had never had the greatest family life, but for the first time since Padmé’s death she felt that she could once again have a family.

“Well then, I guess you should get used to being called Mara Jade Corr.”

“Mara Jade Corr.” She repeated. “I like the sound of that. It’s funny. This was definitely not what I was expecting when I asked to talk to you that day so long ago.”

“Me either,” Sabé laughed.

What would her brothers say when the war was over and they met their new niece?

“But I care for you deeply, like a mother should care about her child… I can’t promise to be perfect, but I’d like to try my best for you.”

“I don’t have anything to compare you to so you’re already perfect.” She smiled. “I hope I can be the daughter you deserve.”

Sabé smiled and brushed some hair from Mara’s face.

“I don’t doubt that you will be, we’ll both just have to face the future, but I know that we can do it, together.”

“We’ll face it together.” She chuckled. “I wonder what the rest of the rebellion will think.”

"I don't care what they think, you're to be of my blood, that's all that matters." Mara was going to be hers, they'd build a life together, for the first time in so long, Sabé would no longer be alone.

"And when this war is over, I'll take you back to Naboo. We'll go home."

It was not everyday a former queen of Naboo got married, so when Padmé had announced to the public she was marrying her former handmaiden, everyone was excited.

As Sabé walked down the aisle on her eldest brother’s arm, she smiled. Both her brothers had been invited to the ceremony. Cirs had insisted on walking his only sister down the aisle, while Sel had played the hallikset for the couple as his wedding gift.

The only two people not in attendance were Sabé’s parents, not because they had refused, but because Sabé hadn’t wanted them there. She didn’t need her mother criticizing her on the most important day of her life.

The wedding was outside, in Naboo’s lake country, a beautiful location and perfect for their wedding. Padmé’s little nieces were their flower girls and for once, everything was perfect.

As a hush fell over their assembled guests, Sabé smiled when she saw Padmé coming towards her.

A royal wedding was always a royal affair and the same was true even if the royal in question was a former queen, this meant that when Padme and Sabe had announced they were getting married the whole planet seemed to be in a tizzy for their wedding. Padme was happy that Sabe had decided to have some of her family, though she had urged her to invite her parents but she understood the reasons why and didn’t push her too hard.

It was the big day, it was here finally, everything they had been through for the planning of the wedding had gone by at a whirlwind pace, now everything was set. Padme was in her wedding gown, out of all of the dresses she had worn in all her life this one was the most lavish and exquisite dress for her and her special day. She started to hear the music play and she smiled, he heart was beating in her ears but she was excited. She took her bouquet in her hands and she made her way out of the dressing room with a girl that had been assigned to help the train of her dress as she walked down the isle.

Padme came out into the area where the makeshift chapel stood with a brilliant smile on her face, she walked down the long isle with everyone on their feet turned to see her and watching her with adoration in their eyes for her, she walked down the isle independently with no one escorting her. It was a beautiful day outside in the lake country of the planet, everything was completely perfect, nothing was out of place and everything was as picture perfect as anyone could have hoped. As Padme made her way to the altar she smiled at Sabe and there was a moment of quiet and then the ceremony began. “Dearly beloved..” the priest said as he spoke the familiar words of the ceremony they were all there to witness.

Padmé looked like something out of an old storybook. Though, Sabé figured she looked much the same in the elegant gown the other handmaidens had helped her into early this morning.

Taking her bride's hand, the former handmaiden smiled, and whispered so only Padmé could hear her.

"You look beautiful, I'm so lucky."

“I have something important I want to ask you about, something… something I’ve been thinking of for a long time.”

The redhead walked over and sat next to the woman that had quickly become the mother she never had. “What is it Sabé?” She asked curiously.

“How would you feel about taking my surname?” Sabé had never felt so nervous, she had never had children of her own, though she loved Mara as a mother was supposed to love a child.

“Only if you want to of course.”

Mara looked at the woman in shock. She had no real knowledge of what her name was before the empire. Mara Jade was all she knew. And now…now she was being asked to join and actual family. “You…you want me to be a part of your family?”

“Well, it’s not much of a family, my parents are both long gone, but you would have uncles.” Sabé said resisting the urge to wring her hands, granted she hadn’t seen her brothers in years, too dangerous with her work, but she wanted Mara to know the love of a family even if it was a fractured one.

“Well, what do you say?”
