When  Bailey  heard  her  order  called  out  by  one  of  the  baristas  she  headed  for  the  pickup  counter  without  any  thought.  Simply  glad  that  she  hadn't  had  to  wait  too  long.  The  caffeine  hit  was  something  she  was  practically  feening  for  given  how  little  sleep  she'd  managed  to  get  the  night  before.  Between  the  melodies  forming  in  her  brain  and  Keyser  allowing  her  inner  demon  out  it  was  a  toss  and  turn  night.

As  she  reached  for  the  iced  beverage  her  hand  collided  with  another  and  Bailey  didn't  retract.  Only  her  eyes  turned  to  the  woman  collecting  the  same  drink.  She'd  spent  too  many  years  living  in  New  York  where  you  had  to  be  assertive  or  you'd  get  walked  all  over.  A  lesson  the  woman  who'd  spent  her  formative  years  in  Sedona  had  learned  the  hard  way.

"Yeah,  this  one's  mine."  There  was  no  harsh  tone.  Bailey  actually  smiled  and  was  sure  she  remembered  when  the  woman  had  walked  in.  "I  think  you  came  in  after  me  so  it  might  be  another  minute."  A  claimant  hand  rested  atop  the  coffee  beverage.  "That's  cute  though.  You've  got  good  taste  if  you've  ordered  the  same  thing."

Visions  of  plunging  a  straw  into  the  drink  played  behind  her  eyes  and  it  seemed  like  her  mouth  kept  getting  drier,  more  parched  the  longer  this  woman  didn't  realize  the  mixup.  Sleep  deprivation  pained  softly  at  her  temples.  "Too  bad  this  isn't  Starbucks  where  they  put  names  on  drinks,  yeah?"

For  nearly  36  years  she'd  been  walking  and  usually  had  no  trouble  doing  so.  Today  though  there  seemed  to  be  something  in  the  atmosphere.  Given  that  Bailey  wasn't  entirely  sure  how  much  truth  and  realism  she'd  put  into  the  planets  and  astrology  and  all  that  she  couldn't  start  placing  blame  on  Mercury  being  in  the  microwave.  She  wanted  to,  yet...  couldn't.

Already  by  early  afternoon  she'd  had  a  couple  of  mishaps  that'd  put  her  on  guard  with  the  vigilance  of  someone  being  stalked  by  the  universe.  And  maybe  that  was  the  reason  her  sandal  had  decided  on  sabotage.

Somehow  the  piece  of  footwear  had  twisted  under  her  foot  while  wearing  it  and  while  walking  and  nearly  took  her  out.  For  a  good  solid  minute  Bailey  stumbled  like  a  young  fawn  just  learning  how  to  get  it's  legs  under  it  to  avoid  faceplanting  the  concrete  sidewalk.

"What  the  fuck?"  On  instinct  her  hand  had  shot  out  and  gripped  the  person  passing  by.  Only  to  steady  herself,  and  maybe  to  catch  her  breath  and  possibly  to  get  her  heart  to  stop  racing.  Her  grip  loosened  on  the  woman  while  wild,  terrified  eyes  locked  in  with  the  witness.  Fingers  curled  into  her  chest  as  Bailey  silently  willed  the  cadence  to  slow.  "What  in  the  hell?  There's  not  even  anything  to  trip  on  there!"

The  flat,  smooth  and  taunting  sidewalk  glared  up  at  her  innocently  as  though  it  hadn't  just  tried  to  end  her  days.  "I  could've  cracked  my  head  open.  You  saw  that  right?  I  didn't  even  trip.  This  sandal..."  Suspicious,  conspiracy  claiming  blue  eyes  glanced  down  at  her  footwear  before  shooting  back  up  to  the  woman  she  was  still  holding  onto.

"This  is  literally  the  third  weird  thing  to  happen  to  me  today."  Just  when  her  heart  was  starting  to  find  a  more  healthy  rhythm  it  was  kicking  back  up  into  a  panic  gear.  "The  universe  is  out  to  get  me."

"I  was  looking  for  you  a  few  minutes  ago."  Amusement  was  bright  in  her  eyes  as  she  stopped  in  front  of  him,  peering  up  at  the  tall  man  she'd  brought  as  a  plus  one  to  a  wedding  for  a  first  date.  "Your  services  were  needed  to  talk  me  down  from  doing,"  pause  for  effect  and  emphasis,  "a  thing,"  another  pause,  that  time  with  a  growing  smile,  "since  I  couldn't  find  you..."  A  shift  of  her  shoulders  and  an  expression  on  her  face  claimed  that  she  couldn't  be  blamed  for  what  was  to  come.

The  reception  had  been  going  smoothly.  Bailey  had  mingled  a  bit,  made  sure  the  people  that  had  insisted  upon  her  attendance  knew  she'd  shown  up,  and  only  had  champagne  in  her  stomach  since  she  couldn't  bring  herself  to  load  up  a  plate  full  of  the  offerings  at  the  buffet  table.

(  It  was  weird  to  her  anyway  that  they  were  serving  hors  d'oeuvres  when  there  was  supposed  to  be  a  plated  dinner  in  an  hour  or  two.  This  wasn't  her  show  though.  )

With  a  step  and  a  shift  Bailey  found  herself  at  his  side  and  peering  out  at  the  sea  of  attendees.  The  cacophony  of  everyone  greeting  and  chatting,  clinking  glasses  or  dishes,  didn't  mix  well  with  the  DJ  working  up  a  sweat  at  his  booth.  It  put  a  slight  frown  on  her  face  until  the  opening  beats  of  Rick  Astley's  most  famous  song  had  everyone  turning  their  heads  and  looking  around  for  the  troll  in  attendance.

"It's  gonna  be  hard  to  top  me  Rick  Rolling  everyone."  Her  body  moved  a  bit  to  the  music  and  she  mouthed  along  the  lyrics  for  a  moment.  "Wanna  dance?"

The  terrible  sound  system  at  the  bowling  lanes  was  blasting  some  goodies  that  had  Bailey  bobbing  her  red  head  along  as  she  fit  her  feet  into  her  bowling  shoes.  Yes,  she  had  her  own  pair,  she  came  often  enough  and  using  community  shoes  was  a  hard  pass  whenever  she  could  avoid  it.  When  she  looked  up  to  see  the  order  her  few  friends  she'd  come  along  with  had  put  their  names  in  was  when  she'd  spotted  him  in  the  lane  over.

Recognition  struck  immediately.  He  was  the  charming  bartender  fairly  new  to  town.  Their  conversation  hadn't  ventured  too  far  at  the  time  (  though  Bailey  wasn't  sure  she  would've  gotten  onto  the  topic  of  bowling  )  due  to  one  of  her  father's  old  friends  plopping  down  for  something  to  wash  the  day  away.

Whenever  possible  she  avoided  anything  and  everything  to  do  with  her  father.  A  quick  exit  made  and  now  she  peered  over  at  the  bartender  with  a  smirk  pressing  into  her  expression  wondering  if  she'd  made  enough  of  an  impression  on  him  to  remember  her.

"You  should've  mentioned  you  bowled."  Working  up  to  her  feet  she  ignored  her  friends  as  they  prattled  on  and  closed  a  bit  of  the  distance  between  them.  "I  might've  gotten  your  number  then."

They'd  definitely  passed  that  cactus  before.  It's  unique  shape  a  dead  giveaway  and  too  specific  to  argue  that  they  weren't  going  on  in  circles.  Bailey  took  the  red  hair  hanging  from  her  ponytail  and  hung  onto  it  for  a  moment  as  she  squinted  off  into  the  horizon,  the  vague  direction  she  and  Nathan  had  allegedly  been  heading  in.

"We  can  stop  and  hang  here  a  minute  if  you  need  a  water  break  or  something."  Fingers  combed  through  soft  waves  before  her  hand  dropped  to  rest  on  her  hip.  "It's  not  much  longer."  She  had  a  decent  sheen  of  sweat  going  under  the  brutal  desert  heat  and  her  lungs  were  hauling  in  a  little  more  oxygen  than  normal,  yet  Nathan  seemed  fine  when  she  dared  a  look  at  him.

(  Really,  the  moment  was  for  her  to  gather  her  bearings.  Which  was  quite  a  lot  of  effort  for  a  woman  whose  internal  compass  read  north  as  up.  )

"Al  said  the  view  was  worth  the  trek."  Though,  maybe  that  was  the  last  time  she'd  try  to  pull  directions  from  memory,  especially  with  the  way  her  frequent  customer  of  70's  rock  records  had  dictated  them  complete  with  hand  gestures.  "What  time  is  it?"  Bailey  never  wore  a  watch,  and  she  peered  at  Nathan  expectantly  with  her  face  scrunched  from  the  glare  of  the  sun.

Bailey  was  born  in  Wellington,  New  Zealand  and  moved  to  Sedona,  Arizona  of  the  United  States  when  her  traveling  musician  father  brought  his  girlfriend  and  mother  of  his  child  to  his  hometown.  Her  parents  had  met  on  the  art  scene  and  their  instant  chemistry  made  a  temporary  entanglement  permanent  when  Bailey’s  painter  mother  became  pregnant  with  her.  In  Arizona  Bailey  and  her  mother  were  all  but  ditched  in  Sedona  while  her  father  continued  his  on  the  road  lifestyle  picking  up  with  bands  and  playing  when  and  where  he  could  as  a  professional  musician.  She  and  her  mother  made  the  most  of  it  but  the  vast  difference  of  Sedona  from  where  she  was  from  made  it  difficult  for  Bailey’s  mother.  As  soon  as  Bailey  was  18  and  headed  to  New  York  her  mother  had  made  the  move  back  home  to  New  Zealand.  The  fondest  and  perhaps  some  of  the  only  memories  she  had  of  her  mostly  absent  father  were  of  him  putting  a  guitar  in  her  hands  and  teaching  her  how  to  play  the  strings.  Bailey  also  learned  to  play  the  piano  and  maybe  it  was  no  surprise  how  musically  and  artistically  inclined  she  was.  The  desire  to  be  a  songwriter  sent  her  to  New  York  City  where  she  worked  the  scene,  partied  too  hard  at  times,  and  made  life  much  more  complicated  than  it  needed  to  be.  However,  Bailey  did  find  success,  as  more  than  ten  of  her  songs  are  on  the  records  of  well  known  and  popular  artists  out  today.  A  few  of  them  even  hit  songs.  Returning  to  Sedona,  buying  out  Off  The  Record,  came  on  the  heels  of  layered  heartbreak,  writer’s  block,  and  feeling  as  though  she’d  lost  the  magic.

In  Wellington,  New  Zealand  a  traveling  musician  met  a  painter  during  a  fair  in  the  art  district.  What  had  been  meant  to  be  a  fleeting  connection,  just  a  one  or  two  night  affair,  no  more  than  a  week,  for  a  man  in  a  band  on  the  road  had  lasting  consequences.  A  flame  that  burned  bright  and  perfect  when  contained  in  its  something  to  be  remembered  moment,  had  become  threatened  with  the  suffocation  of  a  lifelong  commitment  when  the  painter  found  him  and  his  band  in  Australia  to  make  him  aware  he  was  to  have  a  child  in  the  world.

It  wasn't  that  he  hadn't  wanted  a  child  or  didn't  like  them,  he'd  just  never  thought  of  it  as  an  aspect  of  his  life.  Creating  and  playing  music  were  all  that  truly  mattered  to  him.  Sure,  he  was  able  to  see  the  world  because  of  hard  work  and  talent.  There  were  amazing  people  he'd  met  through  touring  and  picking  up  with  this  band  or  that.  Settling  down?  Being  a  family  man?  Now  that  was  a  concept  his  head  and  heart  could  never  fully  wrap  itself  around.  Even  if  he  fell  in  love  with  his  child  to  be  the  moment  he'd  learned  he'd  created  a  life.

The  painter,  of  course,  had  been  skeptical  from  the  start.  She  knew  what  the  very  passionate  and  incredibly  short  affair  was,  saw  it  at  face  value,  yet  still  hoped  for  something  different  when  everything  changed  the  moment  she  received  positive  test  results.  He'd  left  a  way  to  contact  him,  the  musician,  and  she'd  traveled  to  Australia  to  tell  him  face  to  face.  What  resulted,  when  the  mini  tour  concluded  a  month  later,  was  him  moving  in  with  her  at  her  home  in  Wellington.  They  welcomed  a  daughter  there,  a  redhead  that  showcased  her  father's  roots  shining  through.

Eventually  the  musician's  call  to  home  had  become  too  much  to  ignore  and  the  small  family  packed  up  in  Wellington  and  landed  around  the  world  in  Arizona.  They  settled  in  his  hometown  of  Sedona  with  the  promise  of  making  more  money  at  local  gigs.  Though,  it  wasn't  long  before  he  was  off  on  the  road  and  she  was  left  to  mostly  raise  a  spirited  daughter  all  on  her  own.  The  ladies  of  the  house  made  the  best  of  it,  Bailey  was  encouraged  at  all  points  to  tap  into  her  curiosities  and  creativity,  but  much  to  the  painter's  disappointment  her  daughter  was  more  musically  inclined  than  drawn  to  paints  and  canvas.

Most  of  Bailey's  relationship  with  her  father  was  through  a  phone  while  he  was  out  traveling  with  whatever  band  he  could  pick  up  with,  either  in  the  country  or  traveling  beyond.  There  were  rare  moments  of  her  father  being  home  for  a  spell  or  him  bring  her  and  her  mother  out  to  where  he  was  for  a  little  visit.  What  was  clear  was  that  he  had  no  real  intention  of  ever  being  domestic,  and  that  happened  to  be  Bailey's  first  true  heartbreak  in  life.  Her  absentee  father.  Though,  he  was  very  strong  in  his  encouragements  with  her  music.  He'd  taught  her  the  basics  of  playing  guitar,  even  bought  Bailey  her  first,  and  then  she  practiced  constantly.

The  difference  between  her  and  her  father  was  that  Bailey  took  everything  a  step  further.  She'd  also  learned  to  play  piano.  By  the  time  she  was  a  tween  she  was  writing  her  own  rough  music  and  composing  songs.  While  her  father  had  been  content  masterfully  playing  and  getting  recognition  for  his  guitar  prowess  through  other's  songs,  that  hadn't  been  enough  for  her.  At  18,  Bailey  ran  toward  New  York  City.  But  it  was  a  lot  harder  than  she  could've  fathomed.  A  ton  of  failure  and  rejection  also  meant  exposure  in  the  ways  she'd  never  wanted.  The  stage  wasn't  a  place  she  wanted  to  be  but  to  get  her  songs  heard  she  had  to  perform.  After  years  of  grinding  it  out,  Bailey  eventually  found  success.

Being  apart  of  the  underground  music  scene  meant  a  lot  of  colorful  characters,  and  she'd  find  a  couple  more  heartbreaks  in  her  young  life  there.  A  bad  roommate  that  took  advantage  of  her  sheltered  innocence,  a  friend  and  fellow  aspiring  songwriter  who  would  steal  her  hard  work  and  claim  it  as  their  own,  but  nothing  compared  to  the  depths  of  hell  that  came  along  with  falling  for  a  secret  addict.  The  relationship  with  her  ex  had  been  full  of  ups  and  downs,  extreme  highs  and  lows  at  points,  and  tested  her  in  nearly  every  way  possible.  When  the  third  rehab  attempt  hadn't  worked  that  was  when  Bailey  finally  quit,  realized  that  no  matter  how  much  she  loved  they  would  always  love  something  else  more.

That  wasn't  the  worst  of  it,  though.  Once  again,  the  biggest  heartbreak  of  her  life  would  be  her  father.  Bailey  following  in  his  footsteps  had  been  something  to  be  proud  of.  There  were  times  he  even  called  in  favors,  connected  her  with  people  that  could  help  hone  her  talents,  and  put  in  word  for  her  where  it  really  counted.  It  was  just  the  more  success  she  found,  her  songs  featuring  on  major  artist's  records  and  some  of  them  even  being  hits  on  radio,  the  more  envy  would  turn  their  relationship  ugly.  Eventually  calls  would  stop  coming,  record  execs  and  artists  would  pass  on  her  work,  and  Bailey  would  find  out  it  was  her  father  was  turning  them  all  against  her.

When  she'd  left  at  18  for  New  York  her  mother,  the  painter,  had  taken  that  opportunity  to  go  back  home  to  New  Zealand.  The  house  had  been  left  for  Bailey  in  Sedona,  and  when  her  world  seemingly  had  come  to  an  end  she  settled  in  where  she'd  grown  up.  Off  The  Record  was  bought  out  on  a  whim,  still  wanting  to  stay  connected  to  music  while  not  being  fully  immersed  and  connected  to  it  all  the  same.  She's  spent  the  last  five  years  dealing  with  writer's  block,  grief,  and  piece  by  piece  remodeling  her  home  in  something  of  a  symbolic  and  cathartic  gesture.
