Lynda Barry

When I was first setting out and making comics in earnest, I felt that many of them oftentimes weren’t so concerned with experimentation and instead focused on using “traditional” comics mediums and storytelling conventions. And I get it, they work—but I wanted (and still want!) to see how far comics could go.

Lynda Barry’s work was my first exposure to comics with mixed-media elements that worked well together. She is a longtime cartoonist and, by the time I read One Hundred Demons in the early 2000s, her fearlessness in both subject matter and medium had shown through. It was easy for me to relate to Barry’s portrayal of her childhood—a bit out-of-place in a multicultural household, a bit dysfunctional and impoverished, and living in a vibrant, unique town. Her use of bright colors (watercolor, I believe) and collage was just what I was looking for and led me down a path of creating my own collaged and watercolored comics.

Barry has since created several instructional comics in the past few years, but I’m focusing here on What It Is, since this is the first one she created and the one I love the most. The pages themselves are enough to get me in a creative mindset. Few things make me happier than seeing these lovely drawings on lined yellow paper. I can practically hear my high school art teachers biting their nails over the use of “amateurish” supplies here. But the use of ephemeral and unconventional materials is perfect—they allow Barry to truly be free.
