Enemy Within

All he could muster at the Vulcan’s attempt at humor–though, surely, he’d never admit it–was a weak little smile, those hazel eyes retreating, finally, down to the carpet. He felt remarkably weak now, standing here brooding, but he couldn’t pull himself out of it. Even with Spock, standing there, saying that, he couldn’t believe it, looking at those memories now he was almost certain he WOULDN’T have found the self control, and that in itself scared him.

In the very least, he knew his first wasn’t lying to him, Spock really DID believe that his captain, his human captain would’ve found the strength in that moment of weakness, and damn it, Jim didn’t have the strength in him to argue.

Maybe he too would like to believe.

“Thank you, Spock, honest…” And even still, he couldn’t bring himself to look back into those eyes. “Maybe it is just as you say, that human minds in reality, are really just inferior.” Eyes finally fluttered closed, hands clasped even still behind his back, tightening around in each other in frustration.

He was too tired, too emotional, and he didn’t know what he could do now in front of his first without making a total fool of himself.

“Jim, I do not think it is a valid argument to use a quote I used to derail Dr. McCoy from one of his emotional tirades.” He took a deep breath as he moved from the captain’s side to stand between him and the viewport. Jim was gazing at the floor, and it was frustrating to see him so defeated after fighting so hard to save his life and the crew.

“I do not think human minds are inferior. I think the reliance of gut reactions over logic is often a mistake, but you have proven on multiple occasions that I was wrong.” The lanky Vulcan wished he could let his mask slide, that he could lean against the wall with his arms hanging loosely at his sides.

“You would have done the right thing. I believe in you—the crew does as well.” Spock was well aware that was an emotional response, but he hoped Jim might let it slide. Then again, it might be just as well if Jim did call him out on it. It might break him out of his cloud of despair for them to engage in some teasing banter.

There is no pain - Spock & McCoy

Spock wasn’t happy. Oh, he could put on that mask but McCoy knew a few of his tells. The way he held himself, the clipped nature of his remarks… He’d thrown a wrench in the green-blooded computer’s plans alright. 

And there was Spock bringing up Jim again. McCoy was nearly certain he’d caught Spock in the act of… visiting Jim? Trying to help the Captain stage a breakout? Nothing new. But at least he’d thwarted it, whatever it was.

“My top three candidates would be Lieutenant Anfin, Ensign Alvarez, and Nurse Hadley. All good, competent people with relevant experience.” He was eyeing Spock, looking for a clue as to what the hobgoblin was up to. Now that he was suspicious, well…

“Say, you’re looking a little greener than usual. Breakfast not sitting well with you?”

Spock didn’t need to jot down the names. He’d remember them. His memory was flawless, especially when the crew was concerned, and right now he wished he needed to write them because he’d be able to focus on that instead of McCoy.

The human was intent on picking at him until he got what he wanted, and since he had no intention of admitting his leg injury, another tactic would be necessary. Spock took a deep breath and let it out slowly, counting the bars of light as they shot past deck after deck on their way to the bridge—where he would hopefully be able to do his job while Jim was in Sickbay.

“That is possible. I did rush through my meal.” None of that was a lie. It was a deflection, and had he been human, he might have crossed his fingers that McCoy would believe him. “I will add Anfin, Alvarez, and Hadley to the duty roster for the landing party. Thank you, Doctor.” He timed it perfectly, the doors of the turbolift slid open, and he stepped onto the bridge going directly to the captain’s seat.

     Kirk bristled like a cat when there was a presence beside him, suddenly, just the man he was thinking of seemed to materialize. He tried pick up that slouch he’d been carrying moments before the Vulcan came in, and forced those hazel eyes to stay trained on the stars. “I’m fine Spock.” His voice was gentle and all calm, so unlike the storm he was currently feeling brewing inside himself. It was very apparent that he wasn’t fine, anyone would be able to put that together, looking at him now, brows all knitted together, hidden in the lower levels like a child, but, damn it, he was the CAPTAIN. “I’m just thinking, is all.” There was a ghost of a sigh, and even now he noticed his first officer had come for him. It was becoming harder and harder to believe that Vulcan’s were only touch telepaths, because this man had always seemed to read him so damn easily.

Standing here, alone with his first officer, it did feel like a weight was lifted, at least a little bit.

     “I must look terribly silly standing down here…” He assumed, that the other man wouldn’t believe him if he said he was just staring out at the stars. “…But, I–” And he had told himself he wouldn’t vent, but he was opening his mouth and starting anyways. “–That man was ME Spock, and if my yeoman didn’t stop me I don’t know what I would have done.” And he fought his urge to look to the carpet, because, damn it, he had his pride, in the very least.

     There was a shake of his head, and slowly, he was forcing a smile, looking at the sharp features of his first officer. “You must think I’m behaving terribly ‘human’, I’m sorry.” Of course, he knew apologies were unnecessary, because Spock would’ve have come here if he didn’t intent to help, but…

Kirk still hated being this way.

Now it was time to say something that could be construed as confusion to lighten the mood. Not that he had a great deal of hope it would help Jim, but it was worth the effort. It always was. Spock had given up trying to understand why the captain had become so important to him. It was simply something that was, and it was illogical to question it more than he already had.

“Why would you appear silly watching the stars on the observation deck, Captain. Is that not why it is called the ‘observation deck’?” He arched a brow, as he turned to meet Jim’s eyes. He found them fascinating in their blend of green and brown. They were the colors of Earth in Spock’s mind. Reminding him of the forests of the Muir Woods north of San Francisco.

“Captain…Jim.” He let his shoulders relax a fraction of an inch, hoping to give the impression that he still trusted him. “We do not know that you would have continued in your action. I believe that even though that side of you was savage and brutal that he was still the captain of this ship, and as the captain, you would have in the end stopped. Had any member of the crew been in danger, if we had been under attack, you would have acted to protect the ship and crew.”

Kirk felt terribly exhausted.

     That man had been him, was him, and together now, he could see two different sets of memories all jumbled in his heart and he was at WAR. Finding his way into one of the lower observation decks, he let himself stare out at the familiar stars, and found himself alone with his thoughts for the first time since the alpha shift ended. McCoy had been right, of course, that there was nothing INHUMAN about that side, the side that’s all passion, rage, he knew it was necessary in the way he had deflated at the thought of command, and the way his two dearest friends had watched him all weak and afraid, with a terrible look of pity as he fought indecision, which haunted him even NOW. No man was ever meant to see something like that, to be split in two and see himself lay bare, and he felt terribly unlucky, and awfully pathetic, kicking himself like this even now.

     Letting out a long sigh, his hands clasped their way around his back, and the look of his young yeoman popped into his head all too quick, and there was that feeling of DREAD licking its way up his spine.

     What he had tried to do was unforgivable, and it was hard to think about what he HAD been capable of, in that moment.

No, pity definitely wasn’t what he deserved.

     Thinking on it now, he had to fight down the urge once more to find his first and thank him. How many times had it been now? His first officer carrying him along? Surely, he imagined, a Vulcan would find his emotionalism distasteful, but when it came to Spock the man had always been patient and stern in a way the captain had needed. There was memories of too-soft eyes, and gentle words, an anchor, prodding his captain in the right direction, and he wouldn’t tell the Vulcan simply to avoid making him uncomfortable, but it had meant the world to the young brunette in a way he found unacceptable.

     Hazel eyes flickered, watching a passing nebula, and let out one more sorry sigh. Surely, if Bones found him like this, he’d get a swift kick, but, down here, he wouldn’t have to worry about it. 

Spock was sitting at the desk in his quarters, his finger resting on the button that would activate the computer to record his personal log. The thoughts going through his head were not for public consumption, and he wasn’t at sure he wanted to speak them out loud either.

Personal Log Stardate 8751.4: I have seen into my captain’s mind, far deeper than I ever could without a mind-meld, and even then, I am uncertain that I would have seen what I did today. He was torn in two, my friend, caught between light and darkness in ways that I cannot comprehend. I told McCoy that I understood how Jim felt to be torn in half, but I was lying. Even though I spend so much time suppressing my emotions, trying to be only Vulcan, hiding all that is human within me—it is not the same.

I told Jim that he had to accept both parts of his personality in order to be the captain, to be the man he was destined to be.

Yet I seem to be incapable of doing the same.

End log.

It didn’t take the Vulcan long to find Jim on the observation deck. The room was fortunately empty, which was to be expected as late as he was in the middle of gamma shift. Even Spock was usually sleeping by now. With his hands folded behind his back, he stepped to stand at the Captain’s side, hopeful that Jim would want his company—an emotional response that he was not ashamed of nor confused by.

“I am here if you need anything, Jim.”

Spock Prime - Retiring the Muse

I’ve been thinking about this since I saw Star Trek Beyond, and I’ve decided to retire my Spock Prime muse. I love the character. I loved Leonard Nimoy, and I always will. But in honor of Spock, I’ve decided not to create new interpretations of the original character. 

I will still RP Kelvin Spock on @1stofficerspock, and someday I may write more fanfic for TOS. 

But for now it is time for me to say goodnight to Spock Prime. I will miss you Ambassador. 

You have been and always shall be my hero.

Unbalanced Truths – Spock and McCoy

The thought of a secret staying hidden two thousand years did certainly seem like unlikely. But, in his experience, Bones couldn’t say that it would have been the strangest thing he’d ever heard. Knowing how tight lipped Spock could be about the simplest things did make him wonder if such an embarrassing bit of information wouldn’t have kept all of Vulcan hushed.

“I’d say that only seems logical. Wanting to know the truth. Especially with what we’ve seen. And if your poking around does ruffle some feathers? Then what?”

“It would not be the first time I ruffled said feathers, Doctor.” Spock hid all but the tiniest hint of a smile when he thought of his final meeting before the Vulcan Science Academy when he’d told him to ‘live long and prosper’—while wishing they’d fornicate with themselves in the middle of a gravel pit. “I have a reputation for it.”

Then Spock did something he rarely did, he placed his hand on McCoy’s arm in a show of affection. “I must thank you once more for seeking me out. You have helped me to find a purpose instead of being lost in my own thoughts and emotions.”

The touch offered was quickly withdrawn when another member of the crew entered the observation lounge. Spock’s hands folded behind his back in a fraction of a moment, and his mask of the perfect Vulcan hid away his humanity. “Perhaps we could discuss this further after alpha shift tomorrow?”
