Women went after other women on the hanging committee because of jealousy and misogyny. Your sisters tortured you just as much as the men, but you know, girl power.

Witches weren’t killed in the thousands and majority of it was for heresy. Heresy was to go against the church or bible in anyway that was deemed sinful. This could just be not going to church routinely or to have an affair or a multitude of other sins. Witchcraft was just a minor part of the persecutions of the middle ages but witchcraft was the most feared so when someone DID get persecuted of witchery, it was remembered.

Not to mention, 75% of witches persecuted for witchcraft weren’t even witches. People thought if you had weird dreams, using different healing remedies than the time period, or having an odd mole on your body was witchcraft. You didn’t have to be dancing around a campfire, chanting to be condemned of witchcraft.

In some time periods and areas, men were persecuted more then women.

Men and women both were called witches. Wizard was a term made up for the tale King Arthur for Merlin and Warlock was a term used as a slur towards witches that were traitors to their fellow witch and coven.

So then my buddy is like can I get some water, and the guy comes back with one bottle of water and my buddy takes a drink and then hands it to me, and I’m like obviously he has to lay down and needs me to hold his water so I just hold it in my hand, but turns out he was offering me water, so he turns to me and is like Colton, drink some water, and I take a drink and my garbage lizard brain is like “You’re drink sharing in front of the tattoo artist, now he KNOWS he’s right”

So we’re talking about tattoos with the artist and I mention that I’m getting a tattoo in September and my buddy is like “Yeah I’m gonna go and hold HIS hand for that one haha” and the tattoo artist FUCKING SAYS “I mean, I should hope so”

I had someone tell me that dislike of Umbridge is usually from ingrained sexism toward female villains. I kind of stared in shock — I mean I love my lady villains. I love nasty female villains. I love sneaky and clever female villains. I love female villains that wrap themselves up in what the patriarchy expects of them and uses those expectations to smash someone upside the head. 

I tried to explain my hatred of Umbridge isn’t that she’s full of traditionally feminine attributes.  

It’s that she’s lawful evil. 

If you did an alignment chart, no one would represent lawful evil more than Umbridge. I don’t think there’s ever been a character that better sums up lawful evil. 

And, to me, lawful evil is the most terrifying and disturbing evil there is. 

To me, lawful evil is the shit that gets thousands of people killed while the person responsible walks away feeling like they did their duty. 

Evil forces like Bellatrix and Voldemort are fairy tales. They’re the bad guys a good guy can chase away with a sword or wand. 

Umbridge is that evil that really does lurk in the hearts of men (and women). The realness, the plausibility of it, makes her amazingly uncomfortable. 

So, yeah, I can’t get as excited about her as a fantasy book creation as easily as some other female villains. Not because she’s a woman, or because of her gender presentation, but because she represents a sort of evil that’s far, far too close to home.
