Um, anyways! Great question! To keep from recommending the same five books I recommend every time (though, those are here are well, the Yah Yah Top 5), I’m going to pick from my favorite books from 2022-2023.

BELOVED by Toni Morrison: Sethe, a formerly enslaved woman, reckons with past violence. A story about intergenerational violence, trauma and the effects of slavery on a Black family. Also, there’s maybe a ghost, but there is another reading of the story that Morrison herself talked about that I haven’t even considered until @sawasako brought it up.

A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA by Ursula K. Le Guin: A young man called comes into his own as a wizard while fighting his shadow. Truly the blueprint for wizards.

I really wish more fantasy tv series would take the ideas and premises generally lavished on teenage and child characters, and give them to characters in their twenties and thirties. There are enough people in their twenties and thirties that are either unemployed or have crap jobs or lives in general, who would have tons of free time (or at the very least comparable to school going children) for all these magical adventures ect. Hell many people in their twenties and thirties would drop everything to go on a magical adventure or be inducted into a magical world.

And just because something is for adults, there’s no need to make it super gritty and dark. Gritty and dark fantasy has it’s place, but that place isn’t everywhere.

Writing a Sunset: A Shitty How-to Manual for Writing Angst

Someone recently asked me the best way to write angst. Honestly, there is no best way. But I’ll do my darndest to explain what’s worked for me so far.

The best way to write angst is to write loss.

Now, I’ve seen this done so many ways before. I’ve seen death, I’ve seen destruction, I’ve seen cities burn and knives find their mark. With writers there’s an endless way to build and then knock down. Like lego bricks, you just have to find the best place to plant your foot for the entire structure to tumble down onto the carpet.

But my favorite kind of angst is actually something smaller.

My favorite is what I call “Writing a Sunset”.

A character is created. Someone that we all know and love. They’re build from the bone to the skin to every lash and every smile line. We watch them learn and grow and sink and fall and tower and realize and live. And I, as the author, make sure to give you every detail of her life until you can look at the page and want to reach in and steal their hand in yours.

I also make sure that this character loves sunsets.

It’s the most important time of day for them. That time when the earth is still and silent. That time when the warmth begins its slow travel past a seemingly infinite horizon. Thick in it’s colors, it sinks below and drowns, and in its panic it sends out flares of reds and oranges and pinks that shoot across the sky, burning holes into the atmosphere and letting the stars breathe.

And in that moment, when Orion is lounging against smothering blue and the tips of a nebula soak in the receding magma, this character owns their own world. All they have is the sky and all the sky has is itself and everything is perfect.

And it’s then that I make them blind.

There is something to say about taking away what a character cherishes most. Because in the end our families and our smallest loves are what keep us together. We crave things, it’s true. And material possessions help to find their places in our lives. Losing a grandmothers necklace could be sad and misplacing a treasure map leading to adventure could be devastating.

But I always found it best to not take away what someone loves. But to take away access to it. To know that every day there’s a sunset waiting for them same as always but no longer can they seek it out.

Don’t take away what someone loves.

Take away their hope of seeing it again.

If they’re a couple who want a child, take away that ability.

If he’s a dragon who needs to defend his keep, take away his fire.

If she’s a fairy who needs to fly, take away her wings.

But what I also find is that angst is not complete without hope. It’s pandoras box, really. And after sunsets, though it might seem dark, the dawn will eventually come.

And that’s where my favorite part comes in.

Taking away an ability doesn’t stop someone. It merely gives them a reason to try something else. And though it might seem bleak and hopeless, there’s always a chance. And that chance is sometimes the saddest and most joyful part of all.

When our character learns that by stretching their hands out and spreading their fingers like starfish to an aching sun, they can feel its first rays gliding though yearning fingers. Feel tears against their face and a smile stretching lines into permanence. Know that the darkness will always be there, but oh how the sunlight touches their skin…

If they can’t have children, have them adopt.

If the dragon can’t breathe fire, have it befriend the blacksmith.

And if she can no longer fly, then run until the wind burns her face and scars her feet and she feels free again.

Writing a Sunset is my favorite kind of angst because it’s the one we can relate to most. The fear of losing what we don’t realize we love and the need to reach out and tell them it’ll be okay. Writing a Sunset means having the will to accept a fate you had no choice in, and finding a new way to see once more.

Writing a Sunset reminds us all that sadness is real. But so is courage. And you can’t have one without the other.

college tips for english majors (or other reading heavy humanities)

making a post because I see a lot of “if you don’t understand a concept, note taking, studying” stuff but i’m well into an English lit degree and it’s not so much understanding a concept, or taking exams as much as it is dividing your time to read 700 pages in a week and writing essays, I’m writing this so I follow my own advice

reading will take longer than you think it will, schedule accordingly

even if you read fast, reading will, and should take longer than when you’re reading for fun. you’re analyzing bb

write in your books

no one will care i promise. underline patterns, highlight writing idiosyncrasies

if you’re reading theory, read out loud

idk if this is an adhd thing, but I cannot read a giant hunk of critical theory. it’s like i’ve suddenly become illiterate. reading out loud helps a lot.

you don’t need to understand every reference of obscure writers in the 1800s

the hardest writing to read is when a famous author rattles off a bunch of names of authors you’ve never read. ignore them.

try finding an audiobook of the book you’re reading to listen to while reading

once again, reading comprehension can be difficult if you just stare at the page like me. a lot of old books have audiobooks available on youtube for free, plus you can speed it up. listening to it helps hammer it in. (libraries typically have audiobook sources as well)

google words you don’t know

and whip em out at parties to look smart and accomplished

every professor is different when grading essays, especially for different kinds of essays

forget everything you learned in high school about essays. none of it is true. in fact, forget everything you learned about essays every time you take a new class. every professor has their own made up rules. figure out what your prof wants, don’t take bad feedback personally.

read something you want to read in between

when you’re constantly reading stuff you’re forced to read, even if you enjoy it (and you won’t always) it can be hard to remember why you love books in the first place. read some wonderfully stupid YA novel and that’ll get you back on track

YOU ARE SMART.

GOD, reading stuff you don’t understand over and over with professors telling you you’re analysis is wrong, sometimes it makes you feel DUMB. I PROMISE YOU ARE NOT. just because you’re not a tenured professor doesn’t make your analysis wrong, and it doesn’t make that professor right. and you’re in school for a reason! if you knew about it then you wouldn’t be in school.

I cannot stress this enough: TALK TO YOUR CLASSMATES

Discussions are literally the most important part of this entire degree. Zoom University is made even more difficult in this respect, but reach out! My survey of Irish lit class has no discussions and I’m sad because I want to know what other people think about Oscar Wilde ok? but I found someone who happened to be in that class, and now we chat about it all the time. It makes the class a lot easier to get through.

if u consider yourself a horror fan you like NEED to be aware and educated on the ableism thats been put at the heart of so much horror. like... is that character actually scary or do they just have a limp/scars/disfigurement that real normal people have irl and have to see depicted as horrifying and dehumanizing? if you think any of those things or things like it are scary in ANY context you need to step away from the horror genre and familiarize yourself with the fact that people can and do look like that and they do not deserve to be an object of fear

obsessed with the way that gothic horror is about horror but never directly. it’s not horrific because there’s a haunted house and that’s scary, it’s horrific because the monster isn’t a monster, it’s your grief, your loss, your pride, your desire, your fear. the monster skulking in the shadows, the darkness at the edge of the woods, the haunted house that is too broken to be a home—those are manifestations of events that grabbed onto the fabric of time in a fit of abject horror and clamped down so tightly that they couldn’t keep moving forward toward resolution and eventual dissipation like they were supposed to. it’s all about the scared child and the mourning mother and the hunger in your gut and the little emptiness in your chest at the end of the day. those things are all little horrors but you can’t approach them directly to understand them, so gothic horror gives us these little metaphors and says “here play with these for a while and see what you find.” and all of those metaphors need someone to go back to childhood to release them. you have to care, and be curious and clever, and look for a way to heal the hurt. you have to be so achingly human to survive in gothic horror

do you have any advice in writing horror?

SHOW, DON’T TELL, BUT MOSTLY FEEL. This feels more like just generic writing advice, but I feel like it’s especially important when one is writing horror. It’s not enough to say that a woman is standing in a red room. You have to place the reader in the room, engage all of their senses. Talk about the texture of the walls, the floors, the smell (and, by extension, that gross back of the mouth feeling some smells give you), all that can be heard and felt against the skin and in the mind. Really put yourself into the room. If you as a writer can’t see it, your reader most definitely can’t.

FOCUS ON THE HAUNTING, NOT THE SCARY. A lot of horror flops, in my opinion, because the author/director/whoever is focusing on what makes people jump and not on what makes people shiver. A quick flash of a scary face is scary for that one second. Having a monster chase you is scary, a serial killer is scary, a ghost is scary, but what’s underneath it? Nothing, in most cases. Think, truly, about what terrifies you. What’s the sort of horrible, horrifying thing that sticks with you, that makes it hard for you to sleep? Change the focus from the scary face in plain view to the scary face just out of sight, lingering on the edges. With horror, the less you know is better (though, side note, can we not be like H.P. Lovecraft and just point to vague somethings that make people lose their minds? People want to see the horrible, maddening creature! Describe the creature!), and the more you write what makes you anxious instead of what makes you scream, the more your horror Hits.

Alfred Hitchcock sucks, like he was a terrible man, but he had a point with his bomb under the table quote.

GROSS OUT AND GORE IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR SUBSTANCE. This is the most important in my opinion. Lots of horror fails because there’s this huge focus on grossness and gore, violence without substance. Reading a Stephen King novel to read about minorities being savagely murdered is the norm. A horror film flashing near-pornographic images of white women and Black men being brutalized is what most people think of when they think of horror. While I do like to see a little gore in my horror (hello, who would ever turn down buckets and buckets of fake blood/the imagery of rooms awash with red!), mindless violence and gross-out shots of killing CANNOT and IS NOT a substitute for truly intriguing horror. If you have to lean on grossness to tell a story, the story is either a) not worth telling or b) you’re not the person to tell it.

BE MINDFUL OF WHO’S HAUNTING WHO. Oh, no, wait, this is the most important. Horror, historically, has been a very racist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, and misogynistic genre. Up until recently, horror has been ruled by cishet white men (and cishet white women). Every “classic” horror novel and movie I can think of has some instance of overt anti-Blackness and misogyny. It’s a trope, at this point, that the Black person dies first, that the woman who has sex is the woman who gets cut to bits. The villain is always disabled in some shape or form, “crazy” in that vague way that punches down at the schizophrenic and people with psychosis.

So, be careful! Be mindful about what you write, be careful about who’s doing the stabbing and who gets stabbed. Is your villain an ableist trope? Do the people of color suffer for the sake of suffering? If a marginalized person read your piece, would they feel seen and safe, or would they feel targeted? Make conscious decisions with your writing because nothing exists in a vacuum, and every choice has a reason behind it, you feel?
