I think one of the things that really bugs me about "pansexuality" is how at best it's said to be about explicitly also dating trans and nonbinary people and bisexuality isn't , because I've never seen or heard of gay or lesbian needing to be updated. It's just accepted that if a gay or lesbian won't date a trans or nonbinary person that they're just a transphobic asshole. No need for a more "inclusive" label for gay or lesbian. Same thing for straight people come to think of it.
And saying it's about not having any gender preference is just needlessly and weirdly specific. If anything, that's a personality trait, not a separate sexuality.
Again comparing to gay and lesbian, there's no separate sexuality depending on personality or physical appearance preference or lack there of. A gay who prefers to date bears is still just gay, a lesbian who prefers to date butches is still just a lesbian.
