a halfassed intro post
Since I've been drawing the character the current aesthetic of this blog is based on, Velvet, (since I fell in love with him the moment I made him), I thought I'd finally do a pinned post introducing myself a bit, and him specifically, since it feels weird just posting about him and not sayin' anythin' abt him HAH. I love him a lot, so I thought it warrants a pinned post.
Anyways, hello, I'm Moony! You may also call me Glocky. I run another blog under lunarhyperocula, which is an altar to everything weird, deep, and abyssally straaaange. This is, obviously, my Sonic the Hedgehog blog. I'm a self taught artist, but I still have a lot of practice to get where want to be. Some other fandoms I'm deeply in (but not as much as Sonic rn) are Welcome to Nightvale, Lancer, Homestuck and Undertale.
I write and, obviously, do art of varying success and quality. I love Espio, all of the hedgehogs including Scourge, and have a couple of Mobian OCs. I like cowboy hedgehogs, pirate hedgehogs, knight hedgehogs, you name it. Honestly I p much just fuckin Looooooove Sonic T. Hedgehog and I'm super happy to be involved in this fandom.
Anyways that's enough blabbering abt me
This is where Velvet stuff starts
First and foremost, Velvet is to Shadow as Scourge is to Sonic. He is my personal take on an Anti-mobian Shadow from the Moebian universe, a place I have myself speculated a lot upon, but will not get much into here, if only for the sake of describing Velvet.
As a disclaimer, this is my —OC— to fill the niche of the lack of a proper CANON version of this character, so take all of my takes on him with a grain of salt. I made him because I love Scourge, and so I Naturally was thinking about the other Moebian hedgehog counterparts. However, I just didn't like many of the other takes on Anti-Shad I've seen.
Therefore, in that grey area, this is technically an OC made specifically to interact with "Canon" Characters. Not usually my vibe, but here we are, Velvet feels canon to me :^) Take that as you will.
Another disclaimer; tiny content warning for themes of vulnerability in the cruel world that is Moebius, as well as talent exploitation. He's soft and a little bit naive as a juxtaposition to Shadow's hard-edged calculating intelligence, so prime prey for vultures to take advantage of him, unfortunately. Poor melancholy boy.
As a model and internet personality, he is the Doll of Moebius, well loved overall, seen, and showered in attention.
However, in the the background it can also be said that more often than not, as I'm sure we probably all know, that's not always a very good thing. He is very much a caged bird, and that has its pros and cons. It's a life of safety and comfort, but also of long, difficult hours, objectification, narcissistic managers, and people without the best of intentions having all of the power.
That all explained, let me explain a bit of my thoughts for why his is the way he is, and how he went from the ultimate lifeform to basically a mistreated influencer.
Since Sonic's main theme could be considered simply "being the good guy" and therefore Scourge's is simply "being the bad guy", you could argue that one large theme for Shadow could be "a horrifying weapon kept on a short leash" a concept I have shortened to "toy soldier". The embodiment of something destructive that is not allowed to guide itself.
Alternatively, Velvet is outwardly inoffensive, soft and sheltered from the world, rather than the world being sheltered from him. A doll.
Toy Soldier//Toy Doll.
Where (my interpretation of Shadow) is very aesthetically masculine, Velvet is aesthetically very feminine.
Where Shadow craves independence, is bold, brave and confident, Velvet is fearful, nearly agoraphobic, and only knows the safety of dependency.
They're not opposites in every single way, not even Scourge is Sonic's complete opposite. But they are opposed enough that Velvet's weak, cloying reliance on the people around him, for better or worse, would probably agitate the SHIT out of Shadow.
Of course, at the end of the day, Velvet is an amalgamation of my love for pretty boys, pretty clothes, and my apparent interest in the darker side of fame + the considerations I made above.
ANYWAYS
This Is starting to kind of feel like rambling, so maybe I'll rewrite this better later, but for now I'm calling it here. May add, fix up, etc. but good enough.
But if you have questions about him, feel free to ask them, or even if you just like him, I would love to hear from you! And if you were interested enough to read this, thanks for doing so. 🙏
