A character stops being their own character when they are put in the public eye. This is the whole point. You see them and you see them through your own experience. 

There  is no right or wrong way to view a character, much less to rp them. My Itachi is a needy sexually promiscuous submissive with a dark side. Is that arguably ooc? Probably yes. But it’s no more right or wrong than an Itachi who is inherently violent and cruel and petty. We all see the characters as reflections of ourselves. If I chose a Sasuke muse, it would be vastly different from other Sasuke muses, or maybe very similar. Because people are different. They see things differently. and that includes fictional characters. And when you claim that interpreting characters differently “defeats the whole purpose” and that maybe people who do that should just make an OC, maybe you are the one who is missing the whole purpose. 

I don;t want to come up with an OC with the same background as my favorite character. I want my favorite character to feel the things I feel. And if you think that’s wrong, then by all means get off your fucking high horse. 

And when you say that you hate seeing people whose portrayals you disagree with being praised, it makes you sound like a total fucking douchebag.

"Y-You…" His eyes were still wide but he tried to get a grip on what he was feeling, his thoughts all over the place. "A-Are you a real mermaid!?" Nitori’s blue eyes practically sparkled as all his favorite childhood fairy tales came to life in front of him.

"Heh. Yeah. I'm very real. And very bleeding." He said as he pushed the boy up onto the boat. "Which is attracting every shark in a two mile radius. So please. Stay out of the water." He said. He'd fight back against the sharks. He was used to it. Rin could handle himself.

A tail….this guy….had a tail?! How the hell was he supposed to react?! Was he…..no, no, mermaids didn’t exist and he knew that. Maybe he was just tired or-

Before he could think anything further he felt cool lips press against his and his eyes widened into saucers. “E-Eh?!” IT SPOKE!

Rin could feel the blood still seeping out into the waters around them. It's surely draw in predators. Damn. He had to get the younger onto his boat and to safety. "You need to get out of the water. The sharks will be coming." He said urging the other to climb back up the side. His speech was halted slightly. Still getting used to the human's language.

Nitori gasped sharply. The tail was….attached to him?! He shook his head  to focus. He couldn’t worry about things like that yet when he was obviously in extreme pain. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Try and stay still okay?” He tried to hold the tail with one arm while his other hand undid the hook and untwined the wire. “Shh….relax…there you go….” He gently put the tail back in the water.

Rin grit his sharpened teeth in the pain. Clutching onto the ropes on the side of the boat and trying not to thrash around as the younger undid the fishing line and pulled the hook from his tail. He let out a breath of relief when it was over. He wanted to thank the other. Even though it was his hook that had hurt him, he still owed him. There was only one way he could think of to do that. A trick that the mermaids used so that they could lure sailors to their deaths. Gods, he hoped that it worked for him. Taking the younger's cheek in his hand, he pulled him closer. Connecting their lips in a gentle kiss for a few moments before he pulled away. "Thank you."
