Prologue (and writing preview) below -- enjoy and happy writing:
Ella was only eight years old when she learned that some things are better left unseen, though she didn't understand the warning or the notion behind this until the front door of her home in Broken Bridge vanished in an inward spray of splinters and corroded iron. The invader responsible was wrapped in dark rags, their face shrouded by a hood, aside from a very menacing pair of glowing red eyes. They didn't move like a normal person; they traversed the foyer like smudges in a painting, twitching abnormally until they entered the kitchen.
As the young tiefling tried to control her shaking frame, she watched from a gap between the linen closet doors as the kitchen became a sudden blur of violent motion. Her father, a Gur, fought with prideful brutality with a dagger in one hand and an automatic crossbow in the other. Her mother followed a step behind, instead choosing to cradle her sewing kit and a few other belongings close to her chest. Despite trying to fend them off, Ella's parents would not end the victors of this fight. The choreography broke when a second intruder -- something that resembled the skin of a man stretched far too thin over a frame of calcium -- lunged from the destroyed door's frame. Its blade was swift, as were its moves. It delivered an eerie silence to the house that ended in a wave of crimson across the walls. There was no pained screams, no begging, nor crying – only a crescendo of wet, cloggy gargles and the sound of porcelain shattering on the floor. The two creatures let out a laugh and turned, their piercing eyes absent of any remorse. They were staring right into Ella’s panicked soul. They found the closet.
