Photography final: “haha, hey wait that’s kinda messed up”
Intro to photography, Spring 2020
For my final, I would like to revisit the concepts of motion blur and HDR/environmental portraits to create scenarios that display juxtaposition. I want to photograph typically pleasant subjects, like board games, video games, and other sources of joy and amusement, but in environments that are creepy or threatening. Overall, I do not want things to appear as they seem.

Kilbourn Acme Kruxo, exact expiration date unknown, about 1940s, processed 2013, 2013, by Alison Rossiter
Alison Rossiter uses dark room techniques on expired photo paper dating as far back as the 1910s, to create unique prints that demonstrate the passage of time. Because the paper is expired or damaged, it reacts differently to the dark room chemicals then newer photo paper would, revealing atmospheric or light damage and creating very interesting images. The older the photo paper is, the more likely it is to just turn out completely black after being developed, and it’s with these papers that Rossiter actively manipulates how the chemicals interact with the paper during developing to create unique designs. Through her process, Rossiter aims to respect and pay homage to the history of photography and the photographers of the past, such as with her piece Kilbourn Acme Kruxo above, which in her Getty Museum interview, she described as being reminiscent of Edward Weston’s Sand Dunes, which was photographed in the 1930s.

Heyy Kaitlyn! These are really great photos. I love the moodiness that I get from all of them, especially your self-portrait ones. I feel like you’ve captured the way a lot of us are feeling right now during these effed up times. And the way you were able to use the continuous lighting techniques we learned to enhance the drama of your self-portraits is impressive and well-executed. Speaking of the continuous lighting, I love the picture of my face XD. For real though, you have a really good handle on lighting and how to create drama with it. In your environmental portraits, I feel that the lighting is more ambient, but still conveys a sense of moodiness for how strong the darks are. The photo of your mom staring pensively out the window is one of my favorites. I like how you framed the composition, as it makes me feeling like I’m a small child, without a care in the world, walking in on my mother who has just received bad news. The only photo that I feel could’ve been stronger is the environment photo with your mom and your dog in the crate. The chairs obscure the dog in his crate and ultimately hinders a really strong composition. Overall though, you seem to have met the assignment criteria for each of these, and really know how to control the lighting of your photos to enhance mood. Nicely done!!

This is my second portfolio. It’s in order 2 Environmental, 1 Silhouette, 1 Continuous Light, and 2 Self Portraits with another 2 Self Portraits for my additional pictures. I had problems with Lightroom so there was no time to edit. But my Self Portraits are a quick sum up of everything a woman does to herself because of society’s judgement of a womens’s appearance.
Hey Sam! All of your photos look great! I love your idea behind your self-portrait photos, and feel as if you captured what you wanted to portray very well. I especially love the one with you putting on the red lipstick. I love the composition, and how the stuffed animals are kinda lined up and leading my eye to you putting on the lipstick. I also feel that by having the stuffed animals there, it indicates that oftentimes girls are pressured and forced to grow up too soon. I love it. Excellent composition. My other favorite is your environmental piece with everyone napping, including the dog. The lighting in that one is great, and I love how it’s kind of a line from the dog, to the first person, to the second person way at the end of the composition. It suggests that the space continues beyond what is in the photo, and that there may be even more people napping outside the composition; maybe the couch and napping people go on forever! XD But anyways, I really love the sense of humor I get from that photo. Overall, these are all excellent photos. You have a good sense on how to make compelling compositions and even narratives. It’s a shame that you couldn’t get lightroom working to edit. I was having the same problem, but then I deleted the creative cloud off of my desktop, and relaunched lightroom from my browser, and it somehow worked then? Maybe try that? Overall, despite the limitations, nice job!!

Tamaaar! These are all great photos,Tamar. For starters, I love your continuous light photos, especially the one of Sam! I love the angle from which you took the shot looking up at her, and I love the soft, warm lighting in the photo. I feel it really contributes to the elegant, somewhat sensual mood of the photo. I also love your self-portrait with the baby hands!! XD It really shows us that you are playful and funny. I also find it interesting that in both of the self-portrait photos, your eyes and mouth are covered--perhaps indicating that there is a part of you you won’t show us? I love the mystery. I also like that in your self-portraits, there is almost no negative space, that your face takes up the entire composition; it demands that we pay attention to you, which I like. In all of these photos, you seem to have a really good handle on light and color balance, as I don’t feel in any of these photos are your any colors or the lighting too blown out. Overall, you seem to have met the criteria for each assignment. Nice job!!

Intro to Photography Second Portfolio
Hey Matt! These photos are all fantastic. I really love your environmental photos, specifically the ones with your dad making breakfast and your family at the dinner table the most. The way they are framed and the lighting in them are fantastic, and I really get the sense of an close family unit in each of them. Specifically in the breakfast one, I feel like my eye moves smoothly from your dad, back-lit by the light, down to the breakfast. Really, really great compositions!! In all of these photos, you seem to have a really good handle on the lighting. I specifically can see it in your self-portrait of you taking a picture of yourself with the camera visible. The lighting is bright and gives off a fun and playful mood, and helps you stand out against the darkness behind you in the doorway. I also love how your self-portraits tell us about you and what you like to do. However, in the photo where you are drawing, I maybe would’ve played with toning down the light juuust a little, as in that one compared to your others, I feel like the light is too bright and becomes distracting. Overall, nice job on all of these! You seem to have meet the criteria of the assignments, and your compositions and use of lighting are really fantastic!

Hey Cath! First of all--all of these photos are great! I absolutely love how you framed each of these shots, especially in the environment, self-portrait, and silhouette photos! In the environment photos, there are focal points that lead to the subject of your photos that my eye directly follows without confusion. I especially love how in your first environment photo, your dad is looking away from us, but your cat is looking directly at us! It’s great. In the second environment photo though, I would suggest maybe balancing out the colors more? The cabinets are a very bright orange, and for me take away from the subject of your photo. In the self-portrait photos, there is a lot of empty negative space, making your face the thing that stands out, which is great. I love how you played around with your face in the reflection of objects to create fun and interesting portraits of yourself! The one with your reflection of yourself in the DVD is honestly, such a vibe. I absolutely love how you framed the silhouette shots as well, especially the one with your dad in the doorway. My only complaint is that in that one, the light bouncing off the wall kind of takes me away from your dad being the only thing in the light? I probably would’ve either tried to crop it or made the photo black and white. But I still love it regardless. Overall, all these assignments seem to meet their criteria, and you seem to have a really good handle on how the camera works and how to create compelling photo compositions with it. Nice job!!
