āSorry, I canāt go. I promised to help stop Gabby from buying more candles. Sheās over her limit for this month.ā
"Officer D-bag said theyāre tearing down the house in three days. That was yesterday so weāre on a bit of a time crunch here, Em. Do you want me to steal her wallet or something? Fake a call to the nearest Yankee and have her put on a watch list?āĀ
Jesse: We are no longer friends!
Vincent: We never were friends.
clue?
Blank eyes stared down at shredsĀ of paper, seemingly blowing in the breeze from nowhere and only stopping when they met the brick retaining wall he sat atop. Coming down from his perch, he was careful not to press the pieces into the damp concrete with his black high top boots. He picked up each unlost piece and began placing them together like a jagged puzzle.Ā
Footsteps rang in the distance just as he finished up. Turning, but only slightly, he spoke over this shoulder.Ā āJeepers,ā He started, satire stuck in his words.Ā āYou think this one of those clues everyoneās obsessed with finding?āĀ

āTroll?ā Alice questioned as she squinted her perplexed eyes, playing along with the boyās fable. Treading closer, her footsteps remained light and careful, just in case he decided to āgobble her up.ā āYouāre not at all hideous enough to be a troll,ā she mused, now at an interesting distance as she knelt down to his height. āDo you often feel like a troll, pretty rose?ā Alice continued to tease, her tone derived of humor, however, her eyes danced with a playful light. Ignoring the mention of a toll, Alice was unsure of whether she wanted to know what he had in mindā especially due to smell that lingered on his tongue.Ā
Jesseās eyelids felt heavy, and his cheeks numb from the cold wind his olive skin had been exposed to for a bit too long. He still managed to grin through his still slightly slurring words. āWell, Iām wearing a nice Italian boy now...ā He paused, only to raise his gloved hands to shape them into the form of crooked teeth.Ā āIām a bit toothier otherwise.āĀ
Jesse thought to ask the blonde what brought her to this spot, but the same question could be asked of the boy and his answer was quite blurred from the fast night before.Ā

It seemed that in Coolsville, despite the events of just over a month ago, nothing seemed too different. For a little while it did, people were more paranoid, more on edge. Youād walk the streets past nightfall, and theyād be empty. It would be a ghost town. Pale light casting down on dead streets. But now, it wasnāt quite the same, but it was no longer different. There was still talk about it, still the hushed rumours of who killed the dead girl. But they werenāt so much fearful of a killer on the loose. Everyone seemed to be doing it more for the gossip. To stay in the loop. Much like the time someone defaced the town statue, or an long time family left the town. No one cared. But they still spoke.
āIād offer to come, but we all know who Pete likes more.ā Levi mumbled looking back to Jesse, not quite aware of how close the two sat. He never really was though. He wasnāt thinking of the proximity of Jesse, or the fact that even through their coats, he could feel the warmth from Jesse. Instead, he wasnāt quite thinking of anything. He just continued to tease the brunette beside him. āIām certain if you do a favour for him weāll get a discount.ā
"Hilarious. Maybe you shouldĀ go then since youāve got all the great ideas.ā His hazel eyes rolled, and a suppressed laugh left lips. His eyes stayed on Levi, even as he idly adjusted after his response. Unlike the oblivious boy who sat next to him, Jesse paid attention. He was almost always aware of when Leviās blues were on him and listened to the undertone in his voice when the nameĀ Jesse left his mouth. He couldn't help but to watch closely.Ā
Watch the blond closelyĀ because of the differences he held against others. Even in a town where secrets are hidden behind more secrets, he found no good reason to play his hand close to chest. He was a knot and he was his own undoing and did nothing about it. Just let it slip and tighten around his throat and Jesse couldnāt look away.Ā

Arching her feet, the porcelain doll lightly tiptoed along the abandon tracks. Her presence, a welcoming contrast of white amongst the woodlandās murky browns and withering leaves. Her footsteps would fall closer to the edge within each take, leaving her with a mere inch away as she neared the end. One more step, l'appel du vide. She could hear the void call out to her, however as she glanced down, her clouded blues caught sight of the prince-less rose. Leviās rose, as she came to word it. Taking the long way down, Alice quietly approached the florist. He was a dazzling thing, a charmer that lured in victims with honied words into a web of lies. āYou didnāt fall, did you?ā The blonde questioned, knowing fully well that āthe fallā wasnāt as dramatic as she made it sound.
Jesse was still even as he heard the light footsteps approaching, but he stayed motionless, silently hoping that somehow he might be invisible to whoever. Disheveled, he always looked, but not quite like he looked on this morning. Undone was a better word to describe his appearance after a night of rolling, dancing and whatever else he might not remember. āFellā¦ā His first word came out husky and he cleared his sore throat before continuing. āWell, Iām actually the troll that guards this bridge. Youāre gonna have to pay the toll.ā Finally he hazel eyes finally opened, though still squinted, to see who was there.

Hey, Em.Ā āMm?ā She placed the bouquet of gerberas down and turned to face the boy. Emmaās eyes met his as soon as he was done raking his eyes down her body, something that instantly made her posture straighten, something her grandmother once told her made her look more confident and made her breasts look better. God knows that was the only department she wasnāt completely confident in.Ā
Emmaās eyes immediately widened slightly at the pose of his question, the corners of her lips turning upward. This was definitely not what she was expecting out of her visit. A small giggle escaped her lips and she could feel the tips of her ears get hot.Ā āSure,ā Normally Emma would have just made another attempt at friendship with him but this was a step she wasnāt too upset about.Ā
Jesse shifted on the stool behind the register, moving his sketchbook into a more usable position before his deep voice rang out in the small store again.Ā āAwesome. You can sit on that flower crate, unless you just wanna stand the whole time.ā He motioned with the slightest of nods to a free space between two buckets of fresh flowers where another, missing one, belonged. A space he kept clear for his seat when the only other worker was in and he had nothing better to do than be there too.
This was Jesseās element, but he wasnāt all that confident that the outcome would satisfy him. Lately he could never be satisfied. He plucked the pencil from behind his ear and started with anchoring shapes, not worrying about Emma just yet. His words were slow, distracted when his words came again.Ā āIām not gonna pose you because thatās uncomfortable for everyone... But if you wanna do something comfortable, go for it...ā He paused again, finally looking up from his paper to the blonde.Ā āand donāt worry aboutĀ freezing. People are just being assholes to you if they wonāt let you breathe while they work.ā

Jesse: So where you from? Heaven?
Maggie: Yeah, Iām a ghost. I died fifteen years ago, like that pickup line.

Jesseās silhouette sat slumped against the concrete pylon under the abandoned railroad bridge that marked the edge of Coolsville. This was a spot he frequented when it came to carrying out drug deals, but this morning he wasnāt expecting any customers. He wasnāt expecting to see anyone.Ā His tired and red eyes were closed as a one of his bad habits burned between his first and second fingers, the smoke rising as still as it could in the chilly air. It wasnāt the best place to wait out a hangover, but home where heād be worried about sounded worse.Ā Jesse lost track of time passing, and only opened his eyes when the noise heād been hearing for about a minute could no longer be mistaken for anything but footsteps.Ā

āFor now?ā Gabby reiterates with an amused lilt in her words,Ā āAre you going to clarify what that means or am I going to be left in the dark?Ā āCause I got to tell you, if you donāt tell me Iām going to be left in a constant state of panic. You know? So maybe donāt do that.āĀ
āJoin the club, Gabby. Weāre all in the dark.ā Jesse replied, a smile playing on his lips. The answer to her question was there. āIsnāt in a state of panic the best way to live. Keeps you on your toes. Thatās great in a town like this. You know thereās a killer on the looseā¦ā

levi-henderson:
While Levi trampled the dirt that held decaying bodies beneath him, walking across the ground, accusing the boy he finally came close enough to see visibly against the dim moonlight, the truth was he wasnāt so innocent in the crime himself. There had been many times in the past where heād provided Emma with a freebie in exchange for a piece of information that could inevitably used to rile up her brother once again.Ā āProvider my ass,ā Levi muttered, taking a seat where the other had offered some stair to spare.Ā āMines for a worthy cause, if you want to fuck her you donāt need to be giving away our shit. Take her a six pack of beer or some crap. Sheās an easy fuck Jesse.ā
Jesse waited a few moments too long to reply and when he did, it was barely a sufficient response to the accusation. āYou are so fucked up. Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?ā He jabbed his elbow into Leviās side, but instead of retracting it, he found his hand into his own pocket and kept it close to the the blondās body. After another shorter silence, he spoke again, his breath visible in the air with every word. āI have backup stashed at Perkyās and weāre getting new shit this weekend⦠Iāve just got to meet that freaky fucker, Pete, and Iāve been putting it off. Now weāre low on everything.ā Jesse was never in a hurry to go see that guy, even when he had to answer no to the same question 10 times a day. No, I donāt have any. No, I donāt have that. Try again later.Ā Didnāt matter. Jesse was suspicious that guy wanted his body, but he was pretty sure it was or parts.Ā

āDamn.ā Gabby states with a small grin,Ā āGuess I gotta start preparing for my eventual reputation as the girl whose terrible at simple math. Or, maybe I can make everything think Iām a math genius till Friday so they donāt end up believing you when you spill my secret.āĀ
"I wouldnāt worry about people believing me.ā Jesse spilled, that trademark grin in his face as he spoke.Ā āThatās the sort of secret that sounds possible enough that when it comes from meĀ itās immediately shot down as a lie. Youāre safe... For now.āĀ
libby-maude:
Libby groaned and hung her head. She didnāt know why she didnāt just go straight home after the library. She could tell it was going to rain but instead she decided to walk around town. Libby smiled at him. She had a pretty good idea when people were joking. āI donāt think I have it in me to kill someone, so Iāll just give up now.ā She chuckled. āIām Libby, by the way. I donāt think weāve met.ā
āEh- Itās only fun if theyāre scared. Youāre safe... For now.ā Jesse shrugged, spinning on the stool he picked by the counter.Ā āWe havenāt. Iām Jesse.ā He said, leaning and extending a long arm across the aisle towards the girl.Ā āHow have I managed to avoid you all this time?ā
