French Idioms

I’m in the mindset of this being a year away from Europe instead of being back after a year in France. I don’t want to lose all the French I’ve acquired, so I’m reading Harry Potter in French (I’m on Book 3 now!), watching a French tv series (Fais Pas Ci, Fais Pas Ça). I’m learning a lot of new idioms and remembering what I already knew and I’m having fun literally translating them.

Occupe-toi avec tes oignons - Mind your own business (Literally: occupy yourself with your own onions!)

J’en parlerai à mon cheval - Do I look like I care? (Literally: I’ll talk to my horse about that)

Revenons à nos moutons - Let’s get back on topic (Literally: Going back to our sheep)

Manger sur la pouce - To eat on the go (Literally: to eat on your thumb)

Avoir un cheveu sur la langue - to have a lisp (Literally: to have a hair on your tongue)

Avoir un poil dans la main/Avoir un baobab dans la main - to be lazy (Literally: to have a hair in your hand/ to have a baobab in your hand)

Tomber dans les pommes - to faint (Literally: to fall in the apples)

Conduire comme un pied - to drive badly (Literally: to drive like a foot)

Chanter comme une casserole - to sing badly (Literally: to sing like a saucepan)

Donner sa langue au chat - to give up (Literally: to give your tongue to the cat)

Ça ne casse pas trois pattes de canard - that’s nothing special (Literally: that doesn’t break three duck legs)

Green Ribbons at Emmy Awards to #DemandClimateAction

If you’re watching the Emmy Awards tonight, you’ve seen some of Hollywood’s biggest stars demanding climate action from world leaders by prominently wearing a green ribbon distributed by NRDC supporters. 

It sure looks good with that best actor trophy, Jeffrey Tambor. Congrats!

Climate change is the most critical humanitarian crisis of our time. In December, hundreds of world leaders will gather in Paris with an urgent mission: working together to finalize a new global agreement for combating climate change. 

Tambor, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Louis CK, Don Cheadle, Mandy Patinkin, and Gaby Hoffman are just some of the actors spotted wearing the green ribbon tonight to show support for strong climate action that will leave a better world to future generations.

sometimes self care is cancelling an appointment and watching tv and letting yourself nap. Sometimes those things are are ways of exaerbating your anxiety and stress.

sometimes self care is powering through to go to that appointment, to finish that project. and sometimes that can cause breakdowns and panic attacks

there isn’t one right way to do self care. what works for one person can be dangerous or irrelevant to another

and thats ok? you aren’t wrong or weird for not responding or needing to treat yourself differently then how you see other people do it.

our mental states are all unique, and it goes to follow that self care is exactly the same
