At the national level I found the National Association of Special Education Teachers or NASET, this site helps special education teachers further prepare for teaching and new and studying special education teachers prepare for when they do get a job in this field. At the regional level I found Nebraska Association of Special Education Supervisors or NASES which is on a larger site for the Nebraska Council of School Administrators (NCSA), this site helps to promote quality practices for members from leadership, services, and support of other members

For NASET there is about a $10 dollar discount for teachers making the fee $50 for one year ($85 for two years), for NASES/NCSA the discount for students makes the membership $40. One NASET conference is July 25-29 2012 in Orlando Florida, I am unable to find the prices though. A NASES/NCSA conference is June 28-29 2012 in Nebraska City, I am unable to find the prices. NASET publishes many different series for special education including ADHD, autism, and behavior management series, they are published in parts. NASES/NCSA publishes NCSA Today seasonally. NASET has workshops, web reports, and forums available for special education majors and teachers. NASES/NCSA offers webinars, videos and various links for resources for special education teachers.

The Digital Divide

The digital divide is a term that was coined in the 90's as the gap between those with access to computers and those without access increased. We, as teachers, can do something about the digital divide by finding a way for students to have the necessary access to computers that they need. Weather it be checking up to make sure they have a computer at home that students can do work on or making assignments that students can finish in class on the available computers in their schools. We also need to be able to have back-up plans for those students who do not have computers at home or for a school that does not have the necessary amount of computers in a school in order to ensure every student has the education they deserve. I believe that in the future there will no longer be concern with the idea of the digital divide because computers are becoming an increasing tool in homes and in schools and more and more people today rather than 20 plus years ago had. I believe that soon there will no longer be a worry about the idea of the digital divide and computers will be a commonality in schools and in homes everywhere.

Today I learned...

Yesterday I attended a conference on technology and education and how the technology today can be used to help students learn and educators to teach. I found the sessions to be very insightful and helpful in the way I was thinking about teaching. One breakout session I attended was on project-based learning. I was excited to attend this one because I am hoping to use this in my classroom as much as possible because I want to have a fun helpful classroom for students to learn. I learned about one idea for a language arts project where students are able to create a digital story instead of writing one with a pen and pencil. I was intrigued by this idea and would be excited to try this idea in my classroom to see if this is helpful. I also attended a lecture on apps for special education, which I was extremely excited for since I am becoming a special education teacher. I found this session to be extremely fun for me to learn about and helpful for when I become a teacher. I learned about tons of apps for a teacher to use on an iPad for her students, not just special education students, but all students. One app was specifically autism based and would be helpful with a student who has autism, but another was for early childhood where students can learn math. On this app called candy count the students would be able to learn counting, sorting, fewer vs. more, as well as colors. I found the entire conference to be a wonderful thing to have attended and very helpful for my future in teaching.

Learning Styles

I personally believe that, as an educator, learning styles are not helpful to instruction because as a whole class a teacher is unable to differentiate between the learning styles of the individual students. I believe that as a teacher it is my job to cover the material and if I can do that in a way that is helpful to every student then it doesn’t matter the learning styles they are believed to have. I believe that learning is based on how well a topic is covered, not which learning style is used in the teaching of the topic. I personally believe that a good educator should be including all ways of learning in an instruction for the students to ensure they get an overall deep learning of the subject such as a presentation with a lecture, clear precise examples on what or how something is done, and a hands on activity of the subject. With these being within every topic and subject of my teaching the students can get an overall view of the subject. It’s not being taught this way just for their personal learning style they believe they have. I know, for me, it didn't matter what learning style I had when I was in elementary, middle, and high school and even now in college, I learned based upon how well the material was covered. It may have been that doing the projects I had a better time at learning because I found it fun but even during a lecture I would have learned just the same. As long as a student cares about their education and is motivated to learn and the educator is thorough with a topic I personally believe that a learning style is not helpful or necessary to know.

The Flipped Classroom

The flipped classroom is an idea where students in a classroom are able to do their activities and homework in class and receive immediate feedback from teachers in order to help them better understand the assignment and watch the lectures from the assignment on a computer outside of class and bring in individual questions to the teacher.

This is a positive thing to have in the classroom because it helps students dive into the subject and gain a better grasp on what they are learning in the classroom.

In my classroom I can record a short lecture on line before leaving from work and post in on my teacher's website before I leave from work and make sure that the kids in the classroom know what time they'll be able to watch the video at home and that they get it watched and bring any questions to the class the next day. I can then give them an assignment or activity the next day in class and work one on one with students who have questions.
