Hi mutuals. I had to switch blogs because someone was stalking me.
Message me if you want my new blog.
Hey, I was just wondering do you have any thoughts on Barthes, death of the author? And I guess in extension the return of the author? Also slightly related, have you ever read any of Chris Krause's work? I read I love dick and I'm rather conflicted, I don't like the character but then I identify with her? Anyhow all the best x
Okay, so - as a disclaimer, I never had tons of classes in any of this stuff, so I’m hoping what follows makes some sense? If it doesn’t, it’s 100% my fault.
Anyway: the tl;dr is, I hate it with a vengeance and I never use it. On the contrary, it is very central to my life, and as close a certainty as I have on anything, that whatever we consume we should always ask ourselves: who is saying this? And why? And most of all, cui bono?
Interesting.
I take "death of the author" to mean there can be legitimate readings of a work that the author did not intend. Not that everyone's reading is equally right. People on tumblr often suck at literary analysis and grounding their readings in the text.
But I am all for understanding the author, their circumstances and historical context. I hadn't realized that was contrary to the original theory. (I should go back and read this stuff from first year English... Clearly I didn't think it was going to be as important to my life as it is haha).
In your example about Valkyrie - I think both readings can be true at the same time. And I DON'T say that because I think all readings are equally true. Just that depending on your point of view, you can notice different aspects of a story. The character can play into one trope (making female characters like men) and at the same time from the perspective of a Maori viewer be about the effects of colonialism. Unless the female character as male trope reads differently from a Maori standpoint. I know sexism often plays differently to different racialized women, and I haven't seen the movie. So I may me missing things here.
Harry Potter is both a meditation on death and a treatise on what it is to be a good white person. Rowling probably did not intend the latter reading, but it's still valid. I don't care that she might disagree. But at the same time, I like knowing that she lost her mother at a young age while working on the manuscript for the first book, because that fact informs my reading of the entire series.
Difficult.
Did IQ’s drop sharply while I was away?
Edit: pls click for full size ;^; Reposting because Tumblr hates me.
Inej Ghafa, the Wraith, from the Six of Crows duology. I hope I did her justice!
Done in Photoshop with a Wacom Intuos Pro, approx. 30hrs of work.
I’ll probably do Kaz and Nina next, but it might take awhile. I have a lot of personal projects I want to get done this year, and I don’t do fanart basically ever. edit: I went and did both of them in less than a week lmao
Kaz

i feel you kaz, i feel you (autocorrect keeps changing his name to kazoo wh y )
I was reading this article about how much work and heart hiromu arakawa put into writing fullmetal alchemist and Silver spoon and I’m honestly so impressed???
-she talked with war veterans and people with disabilities to accurately depict characters with those backgrounds
-she also researched military corruption extensively
-she fought to bring in more female characters with her editors who opposed it
-she has told her readers that there is no shame in leaving an emotionally toxic situation and you should never feel guilty for it
-she based the situation with the ishvalan people off of a real displaced indigenous group called the ainu people in hokkaido to raise awareness of their situation
-she criticizes the notion of self sacrifice being a noble thing especially since it’s such a prevalent theme in most shonen manga
-she worked on a farm with a lot of hardworking women and wanted her work to reflect just how complex real women can be rather than overdone anime stereotypes
-she has stated that she thinks there is value in not repressing anger in the face of injustice, and she thinks it’s good to use that anger in constructive ways
-she has emphasized in her story that you don’t always have to forgive the people who hurt you
-she worked on and alongside several other manga one shots, illustrations, character designs, anime adaptions, movie adaptions, and light novels all while having three kids over the course of her career
I don’t even think this is everything I read but hiromu arakawa is a goddamn badass

What does my cat think when I kiss his little head? Does he know it’s affection or does he think I’m trying to eat him
These questions are totes why I follow you, top quality content right here
It’s important!
Well it depends. Do you try to put ketchup on him before kissing his head, that would change things :P
Yes. I put ketchup on my cat before I kiss his head.
Fun bit of info!
Kitties rub their heads against their chosen people as a method of scent marking, but not of ownership. Instead, they’re getting their scent on you because they know that you’re a family, but you smell “Funny” compared to them. They’re trying to make you smell like their family.
If your cat allows you to kiss their little head, it’s because they’re accepting -your- scent, and being part of your family.
Ketchup included.
This is a good note, thank you
This why they boop you. :)
Fact:
In animals that have communal grooming as part of their behavior, sticking your face in their face for kisses/boops doesn’t bother them at all because they know you’re not going to eat them.
But, with frogs (and other animals you shouldn’t be putting your mouth on) that do not have communal grooming there’s a high chance their first reaction will be “plz don’t eat me” before realizing you do not mean them any harm.
Also; if you accidentally step on a cat or a dog, or accidentally pinch/hurt a smaller pet and after they squeak or yelp you start petting them and trying to reassure the animal that you weren’t trying to hurt them they’ll understand that. Puppies and kittens get a little too rough with their play, but when a litter-mate ends up squeaking because they got hurt the puppy or kitten will stop playing so roughly and switch to kisses/licks as a way to apologize before they go back to playing.
When humans act the same way, and do not hurt them again it registers as “oh that wasn’t on purpose” and the animal quickly forgives you.
It’s the animal equivalent of “Don’t tell Mom!”
This is also good to know, thank you!
Thank fucking god
THANK FUCKING GOD.
Grooming your animals is a good way to tell them you love them. I groom my rat Charlie (with my fingernails instead of my teeth the way they groom each other) and he grooms me back and makes happy noises. <3
Thesis: the real reason 4E’s role taxonomy is so unpopular among a certain vocal subset of the D&D fandom is because its role name for the classes with all the heals and buffs is “Leader”, and folks couldn’t handle that much honesty.
I could actually see that causing tension, like with how Paladins players tried to boss everyone around in previous editions.
The thing is, it’s not just a matter of being bossy: it’s basically true.
In a team-based game with high tactical crunch, it’s typically the case that the kind of situational awareness that’s needed to play an effective support is also the kind of situational awareness that’s needed to play an effective field commander. The relevant skillsets have near-total overlap. Whether we’re talking tabletop games or video games, the same principle applies: if you want to win, let the cleric call the shots.
And for the most part, DPS wonks hate acknowledging that. Just loathe the very notion. Ask any Overwatch fan if you don’t believe me!
Lets be perfectly fair, if you focus entirely on your own damage output and not at all on how best you fit into the group dynamic, you’re not a teammate: you’re a weapon with an ego score.
Also that bit about paladins trying to tell everyone what to do? Keep in mind that stereotype comes from the barbaric days before the internet existed and that “ vocal subset” were a bunch of mysogonistic gatekeeping jerks who drove away anyone who didn’t want to take part in their rape/murderhobo wish fulfillment fantasies.
In my personal experience, the folks who are strongly against there being any kind of moral backbone to a party composition are the same people who’re worried about women intruding on their communities and preventing them from being as crass as they want.
that last comment cleared my skin, watered my crops, and did my laundry for a week.
Nicholas Roerich - The Doomed City
How cool is this?!
Here’s a link to a news article and some videos about production (posted before the film was released)
Their Moana is very talented, and their Maui is a local newscaster whose daughters made him audition!
Rachel House still voices Grandma Tala, Temuera Morrison still voices the Chief, and Jemaine Clement still voices Tamatoa.
Rob Ruha and Jemaine Clement translated and rearranged the music so that the songs still worked while sung in a different language, which is super impressive.
Also: Air New Zealand will feature the Maori version on their in flight entertainment starting in November!
this news is from earlier this year, you can now actually listen/watch the te reo version in clips on youtube now. this one is pretty exemplary of the original and new voice actors together! <3
